After a prolonged period of stability, there’s a significant shift in the image generator sector according to real-time performance evaluations by Artificial Analysis, which relies on user votes. GPT-4o from OpenAI, which had been leading continuously since April, has been dethroned by Seedream 3.0 from ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok. It has fallen to third place, also surpassed by Google’s Gemini 2.5 Flash Image, introduced on Tuesday, August 26. This model had already secured the top spot in LMArena (formerly Chatbot Arena) in the Text-to-image category under the codename “nano-banana”, even before its official release.

Top 10 Image Generators of August 2025

Historically lagging in image generation, Google has now emerged as a frontrunner. In August 2025, the Mountain View-based company holds the second position in the rankings by Artificial Analysis with its Gemini 2.5 Flash Image, known for its impressive photo-editing capabilities, and also claims the fourth and fifth spots with two versions of Imagen 4 (Preview and Ultra Preview). Google is the most represented company in this leaderboard.

Meanwhile, smaller players are holding their ground. Black Forest Labs has dropped one spot to seventh but remains in the top 10 with the FLUX.1 Kontext model. Other notable mentions include HiDream at ninth and Recraft, which now holds the tenth position with its V3 model. Additionally, two newcomers have broken into the top half of the rankings: Leonardo.ai with its Lucid Origin Ultra model at eighth and Kuaishou KlingAI with Kolors 2.1 at sixth. On the other hand, longstanding players like Midjourney (23rd), Ideogram (14th), and Stability.ai (26th) have fallen back, with Reve, a former leader, dropping to 15th place.

On its platform, users are invited to compare the outputs of two models given the same prompt, without knowing their identities.
