MacBook Pro Update: Mini-LED and OLED to Coexist Until At Least 2028!

Future of MacBook Pro: OLED and Mini-LED Versions

Apple’s potential release of a touch-sensitive OLED MacBook Pro by the end of this year doesn’t signal an immediate phase-out of the Mini-LED versions. According to Omdia, Apple plans to continue offering Mini-LED models “at least until 2028”. This suggests that both the OLED and Mini-LED models will coexist and evolve side by side for over two years, awaiting a reduction in OLED panel costs.

Updates and Design Innovations in Mini-LED MacBook Pros

Mark Gurman’s sources indicate that Apple might update the design of the Mini-LED MacBook Pro, possibly starting with the 14-inch MacBook Pro featuring the M7 chip, which might launch by next summer. This new design is expected to draw inspiration from the OLED models, although it will maintain a non-touch Mini-LED display. Bloomberg’s journalist has so far cautiously avoided discussing the M7 Pro and M7 Max models, and Omdia’s analysts have done similarly. It is hard to imagine that MacBook Pro models would still be using M5 Pro and M5 Max chips in two years.

OLED MacBook Pro Redesign Expected This Fall

The anticipated redesign of the MacBook Pro with an OLED screen this fall (likely to come with macOS 27.1 at launch) will still feature the M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, according to Mark Gurman. It appears Apple has halted development on the M6 Pro and M6 Max chips to expedite the next-generation M7 Pro and M7 Max chips. The upcoming models are expected to include 14.3″ and 16.3″ tactile Tandem OLED displays, replacing the notch with a Dynamic Island, and sporting a thinner and lighter design. A cellular option might also be available, albeit at a potentially astronomical price.
