Introduction of Advertising on Apple Maps

In March, Apple revealed plans to introduce advertising to Apple Maps, starting in the United States and Canada during the upcoming summer. Ahead of this launch, Apple released the terms of use for its service, detailing the types of ads that will be restricted on the platform. While advertising will be allowed in some sectors, it will be either tightly controlled or subject to prior approval on a case-by-case basis.

Apple has declared a strict prohibition on advertisements for any products associated with tobacco or recreational drugs, “regardless of whether they are legal in a particular jurisdiction”. An exception has been made for alcohol-related ads, which will be heavily regulated. Furthermore, Apple Maps will ban ads related to home services, bail bonds, and cryptocurrency exchanges.

Certain categories will undergo individual review to determine their suitability for advertising: these include medical services, religion, politics, adult products, or any product or service that competes with those offered by Apple or that might harm Apple’s interests. This evaluation is done at Apple’s discretion without specific criteria. Lastly, Apple will allow but closely monitor ads related to contest giveaways, dating services, dietary supplements, financial products and services, gambling and betting, movies and video games, prescription medications, medical devices, and public interest issues.
