Apple Maps Controversy: Lake Ontario Renamed to Lake America in the US

Renaming of Geographic Landmarks Continues: Lake Ontario Now Called Lake America

Following the renaming of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America in February 2025, another name change has taken place within the United States. By an executive order dated August 27, Donald Trump has mandated the renaming of Lake Ontario to Lake America. This move comes amidst a trade dispute with Canada, with the U.S. president targeting the name of the easternmost of the Great Lakes of North America, which lies on the border between the U.S. and Canada. This decision overlooks the fact that the province of Ontario is named after the lake, rather than the other way around.

Technology Giants Update Their Maps

Shortly after Google Maps made the update, the American version of Apple Maps now also displays “Lake America” instead of Lake Ontario. In Canada and the rest of the world, the lake retains its original name. Companies like Apple and Google do not take a stance in naming conflicts but simply reflect the data from the GNIS, managed by the United States Board on Geographic Names, which serves a similar function to the French National Institute of Geographic and Forest Information (IGN). However, these companies are not legally required to adopt these changes. As a result, MapQuest has seen a surge in usage after announcing that it would not implement the name change.
