Challenges in Launching Siri AI in the European Union
Siri AI is not yet available in the European Union on iOS 27 and iPadOS 27, nor on watchOS 27, which depends on the iPhone to deliver the new version of Siri to the Apple Watch. This limitation stems from European legislation’s interoperability requirements, which mandate that third-party AI applications should have access to the same data as Apple’s applications.
Greg Joswiak, Apple’s executive, stated that Apple is resisting these requirements because the company believes compliance could jeopardize the privacy and security of its users. Apple has suggested the implementation of a “Trusted System Agent,” a type of intermediary designed to prevent AI applications from indiscriminately accessing user data. However, the specifics of how this agent would operate (which have not been disclosed publicly) have not satisfied the European Commission.
