TikTok recently introduced a new standalone application in the United States called TikTok Pro Events, specifically designed to focus on major cultural events.

TikTok Pro Events operates alongside the main TikTok app. It is available to users aged 18 and older, offering them videos, content creators, and thematic hubs centered around specific events, starting with the World Cup. Daily challenges are available for fans to participate in, earning stars that can be exchanged for official FIFA merchandise in an integrated store or converted into TikTok Shop coupons. Additionally, the platform has partnered with Feeding America to donate a portion of the earnings to charity.

A separate app and the reasons behind it are unclear

Why not include all these features in the main app? TikTok already has a FIFA World Cup 2026 hub in its standard app, powered by GamePlan, a suite of tools designed for sports leagues and broadcasters. The hub is active, filled with relevant content and hashtags. So, the question arises: why require users to download a second application with an almost identical logo?

TikTok has not provided a definitive answer. The most likely explanation revolves around the reward system. Challenges, stars, and the FIFA shop could potentially get lost in the regular flow of the main app. By creating a dedicated space, TikTok likely aims to provide a more immersive experience and enhance the visibility of its commercial partnerships.

The real challenge lies in the economic model

TikTok is exploring new revenue streams beyond traditional advertising. An app dedicated to events allows for targeted sponsorships and premium partnerships with sports brands, transforming every creator into a distinct marketing channel. The 2022 World Cup, for example, drew an audience of 5.4 billion viewers.

However, there is a risk that TikTok might cannibalize its own user base. Users are unlikely to continuously switch between two apps. If Pro Events gains significant traction, it could potentially divert engagement from the main app. TikTok is betting that the World Cup is a substantial enough event to justify this split.

TikTok expands beyond its core offerings

This new app is part of a broader trend. TikTok recently launched TikTok GO, a service that allows users to book hotels and experiences directly through the platform. The social network is no longer content just to showcase videos of dream destinations; it wants to facilitate and profit from the transactions that follow. This approach aligns with the logic behind Pro Events.
