Robby Walker to Depart from Apple Next Month

According to Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, Robby Walker will be leaving Apple next month. While not widely recognized by the public, Walker has been a key figure behind the scenes as the director of Siri, Apple’s voice assistant. Following the mishap with the new version of Siri last spring, Apple reassigned its leadership roles; Mike Rockwell now oversees Siri’s development under the direct guidance of Craig Federighi, who heads software engineering in Cupertino. This shift occurred rather than continuing under John Giannandrea, who still officially holds the title of Apple’s head of AI but appears to have been sidelined.

Walker’s New Role and Future Endeavors

After stepping down from his role with Siri, Robby Walker took charge of a new group called Answers, Knowledge and Information (AKI). As reported by Mark Gurman, this team is currently developing an “answer engine” that seems to draw inspiration from the search capabilities seen in ChatGPT. This engine is designed to fetch information from the web and could display images, videos, and local points of interest, complete with a summarizing feature to present its findings concisely. Plans are in place to integrate this engine into Siri by March 2026 in iOS 26.4, with subsequent plans for its integration into Safari and Spotlight.

Implications of Walker’s Departure

Robby Walker’s exit comes at a time when Apple’s intelligence teams are experiencing a gloomy phase, losing talent to competitors who offer attractive salary packages and a more inviting work environment. This is happening while Apple is still trying to catch up in the artificial intelligence arena and is considering outsourcing some of Siri’s functionalities to a Google-derived AI model, Gemini. The long-awaited overhaul of Siri, initially scheduled for this spring, is now expected to be delayed by a year, launching in March 2026. This update is set to include additional features such as the new search chatbot developed by Robby Walker’s team.
