Continuing its expansion of AI technology, Anthropic has launched the Claude for Chrome extension. This tool, still in its testing phase, enables selected users to ask Claude to summarize web pages, compose emails, and perform various tasks directly in their browser. This development marks an important step for Anthropic in its ambition to play a significant role in the evolving market of AI-enhanced browsers.
Claude AI Makes Its Way into the Chrome Browser
On Tuesday, August 26, 2025, Anthropic announced the introduction of Claude for Chrome, a conversational AI agent that integrates seamlessly into the browser through an extension. Initially launched in a test version for 1,000 subscribers of the Max plan (costing between $100 and $200 per month), the feature is accompanied by a waiting list, with plans for broader availability in the future.

Once added to Chrome, the extension allows users to interact with Claude in a sidebar that keeps track of the browsing context. The AI is capable of summarizing web pages, generating content, and executing tasks directly within the browser. Among the features highlighted by Anthropic are managing calendars, organizing meetings, drafting and searching for emails, handling expense reports, and testing new website functionalities.
Users can grant Claude specific permissions, ranging from simple task assistance to performing semi-autonomous actions within Chrome. This extension positions Claude as an integrated navigation assistant, capable of automating various repetitive or time-consuming operations while maintaining continuity across different open tabs.
This launch is part of a broader trend of integrating AI into browsers, a movement already started by Perplexity with its Comet browser and Microsoft, which is gradually incorporating Copilot into Edge. OpenAI is reportedly working on a similar project.
Anthropic Emphasizes Security and Safeguards
Anthropic acknowledges that the introduction of agents capable of acting directly within a browser brings significant security concerns. In its statement, the company highlights the risks associated with prompt injections, hidden commands within a webpage that could deceive the AI into performing malicious actions, such as deleting files or sharing sensitive data.
For this pilot phase, several safeguards have been implemented. Users maintain control over the permissions granted to Claude, which must request confirmation before carrying out any sensitive actions, such as publishing content, making purchases, or sharing personal data. Additionally, certain types of sites are blocked by default, including financial services, adult content, and platforms for illegal downloads.
Anthropic reports that these security measures have reduced the success rate of prompt injection attacks from 23.6% to 11.2%. The company plans to further refine these defenses based on user feedback before expanding the service more broadly.
Before making Claude for Chrome more widely available, we aim to broaden the range of attacks we address and learn to bring these percentages as close to zero as possible, by understanding both current and potential future threats.
