After six years of collaboration on a unique line of speakers for the furniture giant, Sonos and IKEA have decided to discontinue their partnership.
There will be no new models from the IKEA/Sonos collaboration, and the existing speakers will continue to be sold until stock runs out, a Sonos spokesperson informed The Verge. However, they assured that software updates for the speakers would be provided for several more years. No specific reasons were given for the termination of the partnership.
Sonos is on the verge of releasing its quarterly financial results and has been undergoing an operational overhaul following the resignation of its CEO, Patrick Spencer, and other top executives, who left in the wake of a poorly received redesign of their speaker control app.
Launched in the summer of 2019, IKEA’s Symfonisk range could be integrated into the Sonos system and offered a more budget-friendly entry point into the ecosystem, with the added benefit of unique designs. One of the speakers was specifically designed to fit seamlessly into IKEA shelves, while another doubled as a lamp, providing dual functionality.
Over time, IKEA introduced various accessories to alter the appearance of the lamp speaker and also launched a third speaker model shaped like a wall panel—designed to be space-efficient. Its front panel was interchangeable, with IKEA offering a variety of patterns, and new designs were regularly released.
In terms of pricing, the initial speakers were competitively priced against similar Sonos models (which were slightly superior in audio quality) while offering the same networking capabilities, allowing sound to be shared across different rooms, and also supporting AirPlay. The shelf, lamp, and panel speakers were priced at 109 €, 179/189 €, and 199 € respectively.
Sonos has since adjusted its product lineup, phasing out the One models that most closely resembled the Symfonisk speakers and replacing them with the more advanced Era 100, albeit at a higher starting price of 229 €. IKEA still maintains other speakers in its lineup, such as the Vappeby, which are more traditional Bluetooth-only models.
