It seems many current iPhone users in the United States are getting an unexpected gift from AT&T. Both MacRumors and TUAW are reporting AT&T customers have received text messages and notifications on AT&T’s website in regards to early upgrade availability. For an $18 USD charge, a new contract and no early termination fee, iPhone users can upgrade. Of course, there is no indication what the users can upgrade to yet. One could reasonably expect it’s the much speculated iPhone 4G / HD slated for introduction at WWDC 2010 live keynote by Steve Jobs.

Considering the situation AT&T finds itself in, moving up iPhone upgrades was an easy and welcome move by the American telecom company. Ongoing dissatisfaction with their cellular network and recent changes in pricing structures have left many users wondering if staying with the iPhone is worth it. Sprint’s EVO and Verizon’s Droid Incredible Android handsets are benefiting from the discontent with their similar feature sets and networks perceived to be better than AT&T. The ball was really in AT&T’s court in regards to customer retention and satisfaction and it seems like they finally did something in that regards.

It will be interesting to see if the new iPhone 4G / HD, in conjunction with this change in eligibility requirements and their more inexpensive (but capped) data plans, will help out AT&T.

It seems that now iPhone 4G / HD parts are easily available in China for people to buy and then make profit by publishing or selling the images online.

Today according to a news report someone in Korea bought the white iPhone 4G / HD parts from Apple iPhone production line in China and then published the photos online. These photos are similar to the ones which were leaked earlier by a Vietnamese blog. Since, multiple news sources have already reported about evidence of white iPhone 4G parts the possibility of new iPhone being introduced in two color options is quite high.

Steve Jobs at the D8 conference in reference to the The lost iPhone 4G / HD prototype said that he is not willing to “let it slide” and recently Gizmodo confirmed that Apple didn’t respond to their request for attending the live keynote presentation where the new iPhone will be unveiled. iPhone 4G / HD leak has undoubtedly become one of the most talked about story in the blogosphere and now many people are wondering if there is anything left for Steve Jobs to surprise the audience and millions of Apple fans.

Earlier this month we reported that iPhone accessory maker Ideal-case.com had started advertising and taking pre-orders for the ‘iPhone 4G’ case and now another case manufacturer Gumdrop Cases has started the production of iPhone 4G case and now mailing samples to tech sites.

The iPhone 4G case manufacturer recently mailed the cases to Wired.com and in a news report they said that the company based the case design on “specifications provided by inside sources in the plastics industry” and the iPhone 4G features leaked by Gizmodo and a Vietnamese blog. Gumdrop Cases confirmed that they did not receive the specifications for the iPhone 4G / HD case from Apple.

Its overall form factor is slightly more square than the current iPhone. The case also fits awkwardly around the current iPhone: The holes for the audio/silent switch, volume button, power button and microphone jack don’t line up. The camera hole is slightly too large, giving enough room for a camera flash

The iPhone accessory market is very competitive and has often leaked specifications about Apple’s future products. By announcing the availability and producing the first iPhone 4G case Gumdrop Cases aims to gain first mover advantage and supply the initial demand.

this means the iPhone is confirmed to launch in June, not July. Knowing how many units stores received per day/week last year, if the iPhone launched in the last week of June, on Friday the 25th, we’re pretty sure the new sales quotas couldn’t be met (in-store orders don’t count as they don’t get recognized until the customer picks them up). We have heard stores having a 25-30% increase in their sales quota, so we’d like to think the next Apple iPhone will launch on Friday, June 18th.

This news may surprise some who interpreted Steve Jobs’ comments in his own interview at D8 as him hinting that another network for the new iPhone 4G / HD might be a possibility, and admitting that it would be a good thing.

It is clear that Apple need to get their iPhone onto more networks in the US to compete with Androids more easy access to market. But first they need to address another problem.

That problem is that Apple doesn’t have the production capacity to support a roll out of the new iPhone 4G globally, and on two US networks at the same time. However, Apple are busy bringing more production capacity online for the iPhone 4G / HD. The hitch is that it is not up to speed yet.

In an interview with DigiTime’s senior analyst Ming-Chi Kuo last month details of Apple’s new production capacity were discussed. He had this to say:

Pegatron will indeed assemble an iPhone, but the manufacturing cooperation is still at the EVT (engineer verification test) stage. There are two more stages Ð DVT (design verification test) and PVT (process verification test) Ð before mass production. Though there were reports that shipments for this particular device will begin in the second half, we believe 2011 is more likely.

Putting two and two together in the tech rumour world doesn’t always yield four. But in this case it seems fairly obvious that Apple needs to go with another US network, in addition to AT&T. Steve Jobs is hinting at it, and Apple are doing something about it.

Verizon will be keen to not upset Apple at this sensitive stage, as concrete rumours of a Verizon launch may well stall sales of the iPhone 4G / HD, as people who are unhappy with AT&T hold off on buying waiting for more options..

Any chance you get to look into the mind of a genius and luminary like Steve Jobs is a rare and welcomed opportunity. Last night at the D8 conference we got such an opportunity. Although the inner thoughts of the captain of Apple are a little more common with Steve’s newfound willingness to answer e-mail, Walt Mossberg and Kara Swisher’s interview ranged over a wide variety of topics. It was interesting to get his take on many of the stories and controversies that have surrounded his company in the last 12 months.

During the D8 interview Steve Jobs was questioned about the lost iPhone 4G / HD and why Apple doesn’t support flash in their mobile devices.

The Lost iPhone 4G / HD prototype – Jobs downplayed the ongoing drama surrounding the loss/theft, revelation, and recovery of the iPhone prototype; likening it to some kind of potboiler mystery. “It’s a great story…it’s got theft, buying stolen property, extortion. Probably sex in there somewhere…someone should make a movie out of this.” While he couldn’t speak at length on the particulars of the case due to the ongoing legal investigation, Jobs makes it clear what he thinks of the type of journalism that brought the next generation iPhone out in the open. Talking later about the iPad and journalism, he laments our descent into a “nation of bloggers” and says “We need editorial oversight now more than ever.”

Flash – We’ve heard the party line on Flash before and Steve reiterated it at the interview. Flash is an old technology in the twilight of its usefulness he said. Likening the product life cycle to seasons, Jobs intimated that Adobe’s content technology was certainly in the winter of its life. He mentioned that Apple asked Adobe to show them something better than Flash but Adobe never produced it. He feels that although there are holes in some sites where Flash doesn’t play on the iPad and iPhone, those holes are being plugged as content providers and sites switch from Flash to open standards like HTML 5 and H.264. He didn’t intend to start a war with Flash, only that Apple made a technology decision based on what they thought was the best for the consumer and “So far they’re liking the iPad…we’re selling one every three seconds.”

As I look out the window here it’s a beautiful, sunny Summer day. So why does it feel like Christmas is about to arrive? Well, anyone tuned into the Apple universe will tell you that’s the way we feel every year before the WWDC keynote. Apple always arrives with a big sack of goodies for us. So what do our Cupertino benefactors have in store for us this year? While mitigating circumstances may have revealed some of the surprises in store for us next Monday, some may yet appear.

The truth part of the equation comes in the form of the iPhone 4G / HD and the iPhone OS 4.0. Both are known factors at this point. Thanks to an apparent Spring of misfortune for Apple’s research and development department, we already know most of the hardware details. The fourth generation iPhone will sport a forward-facing camera, improved IPS display, faster processor, and longer battery life. Many of the technologies going into the 4G / HD have already been rousing successes in the iPad. While some have argued the iPad was just a big iPod Touch it seems the reverse will be true of the new iPhone; with many of the innovations the iPad introduced, the next iPhone is a lot like a little iPad. On the software side of the equation, iPhone OS 4.0 should prove to use the new hardware to the fullest extent possible. The most anticipated known feature is multitasking. Long an item only available to native iPhone apps like Mail, Music, and Mobile Safari; Apple has opened it up for all to use. I am particularly excited about the general availability of multitasking although I am a bit worried as well. I recently used a jailbroken iPod Touch with the Backgrounder app running. For those that may not know, Backgrounder is a hack that brought multitasking to jailbroken iPhones and iPod Touches long before OS 4. While it was interesting to use a multitasking device running the iPhone OS, it seemed to burn through the battery life at an astonishing rate and it did seem to lag the OS some. Now, it was hardly a scientific test of the feature so any number of variables may have been in play but I hope official multitasking support addresses my lingering doubts.

With most of the iPhone announcements are already known, you may wonder what there’s left for Steve to surprise us with on June 7th. There are actually two prominent rumors floating around that might make a debut at the WWDC keynote. First was news late last week of a rumored new cloud-based Apple TV product. While Apple TV has never been much cause for interest in the iPhone OS crowd, this new device should cause a stir. Not only will it offer cloud-based streaming instead of the traditional local storage model, but it will also run the iPhone OS. In this new device we see Apple’s strategy of using the mature iPhone OS as the platform for a complete line of consumer content products, much like Google is attempting with Android.

The second rumor will serve as a compliment to the first. If the new Apple TV makes its debut at WWDC we should also see the unveiling of the much rumored “iTunes in the cloud” service. Video is a good starting point but Apple should see the obvious advantages of moving everything to a streaming model. The LaLa acquisition should finally start to bear fruit as Apple takes a multi-pronged and concerted approach to cloud-based content usage.

Regardless of what happens next Monday, it will be exciting to see what goodies Apple brings us. Just like kids on Christmas Day.

What do you think will come out of the WWDC keynote this year? Do you have a wishlist of products or features you’d like to see? Will there be more than new iPhones in store? Let us know in the comments.

If you have been following news reports and rumors about the new iPhone 4G then you would probably have a very clear picture of how the next iPhone will look and  know the exact hardware specification which will be offered.

The prototype leak and iPhone OS 4 beta code has revealed some interesting information about upcoming features and heres a round up of what we know so far.

The values for video capture in the third beta hint at a high resolution camera which could record 720p high-definition video.

iPhone OS 4 beta code had various references to error messages which prompted the user about video call being disconnected because the local Wi-Fi connection was lost.

Various news sources have confirmed that the code in iPhone OS 4 had reference to titles like “Flash is disabled” The design of the leaked iPhone 4G prototype also confirmed that next iPhone will support a camera with flash.

iPhone OS 4 Features Round Up

This has been one of the highly anticipated features for iPhone and Apple will finally allow you to customize the home screen of your device with new wallpapers in the background.

The average number of iPhone apps a user installs is increasing as more and more apps are made available. iPhone OS 4 will enable you to manage your apps with ‘Folders’ You will be able to group 9 apps in one folder to save the number of icons appearing on your home screen. This will also enable users to easily access the frequently used apps and games.

iPhone OS 4 will imporve the SMS app and now you’ll be able to Limit character count, Repeat alert, Show preview, Toggle MMS and group messaging and Toggle subject field viewer.

The fourth beta of iPhone OS 4 had an option in the settings menu which suggests that AT&T will finally be offering internet tethering on iPhone.

Apple provides seven multitaking services as APIs to developers which include Background audio, Voice over IP, Background Location, Push Notifications, Local Notifications, Task Completion and Fast app switching. These APIs will allow you to stream internet radio using Pandora in the background while you surf the internet and receive incoming Skype calls even when when the app is not active.

Multitasking is only supported on iPhone 3GS, iPod touch 3rd gen and iPad.

Mail app on iPhone OS 4 will include Unified Inbox, Multiple Exchange Accounts, Fast inbox switching, Threaded messages and the ability to open attachments with apps. This will certainly make emailing on iPhone much more efficient and provide an enhanced user experience. iPhone OS 4 will also add support for Gmail Archive.

If you love reading eBooks on the go then you will finally be able to access the iBooks library on your iPhone running OS 4.

iPhone OS 4 will add software support for orientation lock which will make reading eBooks and performing various actions on your iPhone in the orientation set by you and will not rotate the screen when you change your angle of viewing.

iPhone OS 4 will add new iPad-style spelling correction features to iPhone and iPod touch. If you misspell a word it will be underlined with red color and you will be able to correct it with suggested words which will appear in blue color.

With more than 50,000 games and entertainment titles on iPhone and iPod touch Apple realized the importance of native social gaming network. Game Center will include Matchmaking and leaderboards too.

As WWDC 2010 gets closer iPhone 4G rumors continue to take new twists and turns. The possibility for new mobile networks for the iPhone have always been weak but as Android continues to grow Apple might be forced to re-consider their strategy and finally end AT&T exclusivity in the US.

If recent rumors about the reason behind AT&T raising Early Termination Fees (ETF) for its customers are to be believed then the introduction of iPhone 4G might open the gates for new mobile networks like Verizon and Sprint to officially support iPhone 4G.

James Kendrick of jkontherun today claimed that one of the ‘reliable’ sources who works for Sprint confirmed that “Sprint will be getting the iPhone this summer”

We reported just a scant few moments ago that analysts expect the iPhone 3GS to be reduced to $99 in the very near future. Most probably when the iPhone 4G / HD is announced officially at WWDC 2010.

We theorised that this may mean that the iPhone 3G will be phased out, and the low end iPod Touch with it too.

Boy Genius Report has just filed a report saying that it has heard that the iPhone 3G is no longer being shipped to AT&T stores in its 8GB configuration. And that orders for it are no longer being placed. Coincidentally this is also the amount of memory in the base iPod Touch model.

Both the iPhone 3G and the 8GB iPod Touch are not OpenGL ES 2.0 compatible, nor are they the most powerful devices in Apple’s iDevice portfolio. So not well suited to multi-tasking (in Apple’s opinion), a key part of iPhone OS 4.0.

I think its very easy to read into this that there will be sweeping changes to the current Apple iPhone and iPod touch lineup announced at WWDC. And we can expect iPhone 4G and new iPod touch to be more than 8GB and OpenGL ES 2.0 compatible by default. And to have more onboard RAM (like the iPhone 3GS) to deal with multitasking which will come on all new devices as part of iPhone OS 4.0.

I expect that the base model iPod touch will now be the 16GB model, which is more akin to the iPhone 3GS, and will therefore support multi-tasking better.

Apple is very obviously moving to consolidate its iDevice lineup for iPhone OS 4.0.

I also expect prices for the iPod touch 16GB will be the same as the price that the 8GB iPhone touch is currently. So perhaps hold off buying for a few days.

Will you be sad to see the iPhone 3G and the base iPod Touch model go? Or are you happy to have the opportunity to pick up a cheap iPhone 3GS, and better graphics and more RAM on all of Apple’s lineup? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

iSpazio has gone ahead and used their creative skills to show us how the new iPhone 4G will look in white, black, pink, light blue and green color. The initial photos of the “lost” iPhone 4G didn’t appear to be as good as the picture above.

There are high chances that Apple will unveil the new iPhone 4G in black and white color options however, we might not see any other color being offered.

Apple’s new iPhone 4G / HD is rumored to include an improved rear-facing camera with LED flash and a front-facing camera for video calls. The teardown of  fourth gen prototype by Vietnamese website Tinhte confirmed that iPhone 4G will run on Apple’s custom designed A4 processor with a clock speed of 1 GHz (similar to iPads processor).

The new iPhone 4G will undoubtedly be must faster and battery efficient and the evidence of front-facing camera is enough to convince us about video call capability in the next iPhone.

Boy Genius Report today published new leaked images of an iPhone field testing unit which shows “Video Calls Debugging” options in the setting menu. They claim that one of their “Apple guys” sent them these shots of the “field test firmware of the new iPhone HD”

We hope this is true and video conferencing is finally demoed by Steve Jobs during WWDC 2010!

Today AT&T in an email to its customers informed about the raise in ETF. This increase will affect all smartphones like iPhone and will also include 3G enabled netbooks. All customers who select higher-end devices “will have an ETF of $325, reduced by $10 for each month during the balance of the service agreement.”

This doesn’t appear to be a huge surprise as Verizon also recenly raised their ETF to $350 which is $25 more than what AT&T will charge.

The raise in ETF by Verizon and AT&T will not impact existing contract customers however, if you are planning to switch your carrier in-order to buy the new iPhone 4G then this will certainly be an expensive affair!

AT&T also published an Open Letter today about this change:

We are now making changes that will lower the ETF for many customers who agree to new term commitments, and will increase it for others. Current AT&T wireless customers who are within their two-year consumer service agreement or have an existing enterprise service agreement will see no change to their current terms.

Beginning June 1, 2010, we will reduce the ETF in new and upgrade two-year service agreements for all customers who are buying basic and quick messaging phones. Whether you are new to us or upgrading handsets, the ETF will decrease to $150 from $175, and be reduced by $4 for each month that you remain with us as a customer during the balance of your two-year service agreement. After the term commitment is completed, the ETF will no longer apply.

For customers who enter into new two-year service agreements in connection with the purchase of our more advanced, higher end devices, including netbooks and smartphones, the ETF will increase to $325, and be reduced by $10 for each month that you remain with us as a customer during the balance of your two-year service agreement. After that, the ETF will no longer apply.

The change goes into effect on June 1, 2010.

Earlier this week we reported on rumors about Apple introducing new iPhone 4G / HD in white and black color options. A Taiwanese website had managed to get hold of spare parts of the iPhone 4G prototype and published images of the white color front panel of the new iPhone.

There have many reports which state that the fourth gen iPhone leak by Gizmodo has proved to be a major loss for Apple in terms of iPhone 3GS sales however, it is worth noting that almost every year around WWDC speculation about Apple’s new products and services reach a new high. So, the actual impact of fourth gen iPhone leak would probably have little or no impact on actual sales. Any person who follows or has studied Apple’s yearly product timelines would wait for the Worldwide Developers Conference official announcements. When David Pogue questioned Phil Schiller about Apple’s withdrawal from Macworld Expo in 2009 he noted:

He noted that Apple marches to certain annual product cycles: the holiday season (Novemberish), the educational buying season (late summer), the iPod product cycle (October), the iLife development cycle (usually March), the iPhone cycle (June).

We have seen many fancy concept pictures of Apple products in the past but this time the details about iPhone 4G are clearly perceptible. Italian website iSpazio recently published their concept pictures of the white color iPhone 4G (or HD) and it certainly looks stunning.

Do you like the white color iPhone HD or would you like to see more color options? Let us know in the comments section.

Almost everyday we read news about iPhone 4G / HD rumors and we can expect many more in the near future as Apple’s WWDC 2010 gets closer.

We recently reported that Apple seeded the fourth beta of iPhone OS 4 to developers which featured many new wallpapers for your homescreen and in the settings menu it had options for internet tethering.

9to5Mac is reporting that the iPhone OS 4 SDK code has enough evidence to convince us about the fact that the next generation iPhone (4G / HD) will feature LED flash. They also go onto to speculate that next gen iPod touch and iPad will also support a camera and LED flash.

The recent iPod touch prototype leak by Vietnamese website Tinhte also confirmed that new iPod touch will support a 2 megapixel camera however, there was no reference or evidence about LED flash.

Apple iPad has been often criticized because of the lack of camera but now it seems almost certain that second generation iPad will support a camera.

The Taiwanese website Apple.pro has managed to get hold of spare parts of the new iPhone 4G / HD which appear to be alternative front panels for the new iPhone.

This is leading people to speculate that Apple may well resurrect the option to buy iPhone 4G / HD in a white model, as well as in the more traditional black color.

There is one slightly weird thing about the white iPhone front cover; in that it has what appears to be a small rectangular “reflective surface” just above the earpiece slot on the front of the iPhone. This has been seen on previously leaked black iPhone front panels, so may simply be indicative of different stages in development for the parts.

So, this oddity may or may not show up, or have some purpose in the final unit. We don’t know. It is actually in the position that normally covers the proximity sensor in the iPhone. That is the component that lets the phone know if it is next to your face or not, and is used to allow or disallow screen touches so that you don’t activate functions with your cheek when talking on the phone. So it is quite likely simply a manufacturing oddity in early components.

Previously Apple did offer a white iPhone option for its 3G and 3GS models, in any device that had more than 8GB.

Are you excited to be able to get a white iPhone again? Would you like more colors? Let us know in the comments…

Foxconn is reported as aiming to produce 24 million 4th generation iPhones this year alone. And is expecting to start shipping them in June. The suggested split for these massive volumes is around 4.5 million for the first half of 2010. With the balance coming in the second half of 2010.

Will this mean we’ll see a staged roll out, and perhaps initial supply shortages, like we did with the iPad? Higher screen resolutions and other features of the next iPhone could well compound ongoing production and supply problems that Apple has already had to endure with the iPad.

These dates and plans also tend to suggest that a roll out at WWDC is likely. Details on the new iPhone’s tech. specs. are also being fleshed out.

Apparently the new iPhone 4G will feature In-Plane Switching LCD display panels which also have Fringe-Field Switching, at a suggested resolution of 640×960. Suppliers for this component are named as LG Display and Prime View International.

FFS (Fringe Field Switching) is a feature that will improve eBook functionality by improving viewing angles and display quality in sunlight. IPS (In-Plane Switching) also helps with better viewing angles for display panels.

The processor in the new iPhone will most likely be an updated Apple A4. Which is basically an ARM Cortex A8 core which has been optimised for Apple’s needs. But one big difference will be 512MB of RAM, double that of the iPad, and definitely aimed at improving multi-tasking capabilities, with lots of spare memory space for switching, and stashing images. Something the iPad has problems with in apps like Mobile Safari, even with 256MB of RAM.

Apparently Apple has been working to allow more space for battery technology to improve battery life in the new iPhone also. Batteries are rumored to come from Simplo Technology and Dynapack International Technology.

Apple seems to be doubling up straight away on a lot of suppliers to stymy supply problems right off the bat. Rather than as a last minute effort, as they did with the iPad. Lets hope that extra forward planning goes better for them this time.

Earlier today Engadget reported that Vietnamese forum Taoviet published a series of leaked photos of the fourth generation iPhone and posted a video on YouTube. The teardown pics revealed that the device had an Apple branded A4 processor with the marking APL0398 which is also found inside Apple’s iPad.

The new model is reported to be different from the ‘lost’ prototype which Gizmodo bought for $5000. The device did not have any screws on either side of the Dock Connector and was running a screen diagnostic test called ‘bonfire’

The device appeared to have a cleaner design which suggests that this might be a newer prototype.

AT&T may have finally done something to make their iPhone customers happy. Ironically, though, they may have put another nail in the coffin of their relationship with their traditionally super secretive partner, Apple.

MobileCrunch are reporting that a number of AT&T customers on contract with iPhones are noticing a rather suspicious update to their upgrade status. Basically the date they are allowed to upgrade their current phone to perhaps a new iPhone.

One customer who bought his iPhone 3GS last year has had an Upgrade Eligibility date of the 21st of November since then. But today he noticed that this has changed to the 21st of June. Why could that be we have to wonder?

Apparently not everyone on AT&T is seeing this, but it is certainly not an isolated incident according to various sources.

When you add this bit of information to our report not so long ago about AT&T putting a block on staff holidays in June. Traditionally a sign of an iPhone launch. June the 21st, after Apple’s World Wide Developer Conference is looking like a likely date for 4th generation iPhone goodness of some sort.

But MobileCrunch do also point out that Apple traditionally launch new products on a Friday. So that would most likely mean that the iPhone would be available the Friday before the 21st, perhaps giving some time for retail sales from Apple first over that weekend. Apple like weekends for product launches.

Confusingly Apple’s WWDC is on the 7th of June, and Apple also have an event booked at the Yerba Buena Arts Center for the 22nd of that month too. So at the moment the actual date is anyones guess. But Apple sure is doing something in June!

What do you think? Have you had an update in your upgrade status from AT&T? Let us know in the comments.
