On Wednesday, May 20, 2026, slightly behind schedule on its roadmap, WordPress released version 7.0 of its CMS. Named “Armstrong” in honor of trumpeter Louis Armstrong, this first major update of the year “marks the beginning of a new era and lays the foundations for AI within the experience”, by including an AI client “that allows plugins to communicate with generative AI models while remaining independent of any service provider”, WordPress explains.

Key Features of WordPress 7.0

An AI Client at the Heart of the CMS

The highlight of this release is the integration of an AI client directly into the core of WordPress. This centralized interface allows plugins to interact with generative AI models, including those developed by OpenAI, Anthropic, or Google, which are available by default. “The core of WordPress handles the routing of requests on your behalf”, Jean-Baptiste Audras explains in his technical change guide for WordPress 7.0. Connections are managed from a new centralized screen in the dashboard, accessible via Settings > Connectors. “You can start with predefined models and add your favorite models using our plugin ecosystem”, he adds.

To enhance the system, the Abilities API, integrated into this AI client, “introduces new features, workflow automation, and creative tools for your site”. It also includes a “new Client-Side Abilities package, which offers new capabilities, an intuitive interface, a command palette, as well as filtering and request management features”, it is noted. These foundations extend the three official plugins released in March 2026 to connect Claude, Gemini, and ChatGPT to any WordPress site.

A Modernized Dashboard

WordPress 7.0 introduces a new admin interface named “Modern”, featuring a “clean color palette” and higher contrast. Most notably, the navigation has been redesigned for smoother flow, with the introduction of view transitions. “Views slide from one screen to another as you move through the admin of WordPress”, Jean-Baptiste Audras explains, noting that, for accessibility and inclusivity, these transitions only activate if “no preference is set to reduce animations at the operating system or browser level”. A shortcut (⌘K or Ctrl+K) to the command palette has also been added to the top admin bar. Additionally, this major update introduces:

  • A dedicated page for font management: it is now possible to manage, download, and install fonts from a single location, whether with block-based, hybrid, or even classic themes.
  • An enhanced interface for viewing revisions: a slider allows for comparing two versions of the same content directly in the editor, with colored indicators marking changed locations. “A simple click on any of these allows you to go directly to that location on the page”, Jean-Baptiste Audras adds.

Enhancements to Blocks

This version 7.0 also brings improvements and the introduction of new blocks:

  • “Gallery” Block: it supports a magnification feature in a modal window and automatically incorporates a slideshow option.
  • “Title” Block: it now offers variants for all heading levels as well as visibility in the search tool.
  • “Breadcrumb” Block: it automatically reflects the “navigation hierarchy” and can be applied globally to site elements.

In terms of design, custom CSS can now be applied directly at the block level in an article or page. All modifications made to blocks are accessible at this address.

Enhanced Tools for Block Creation

WordPress 7.0 introduces the ability to create blocks and compositions in PHP only, server-side, with automatic saving via the Block API. “Attributes of blocks registered via PHP can be modified in the editor, and inspection controls can be generated from the attributes”, Jean-Baptiste Audras elaborates.

WordPress 7.0 by the Numbers

Coordinated by Matias Ventura, this development cycle involved more than 875 contributors. Key figures for this version reflect the scope of the project:

  • 419 tickets resolved on Trac.
  • 76 enhancements or new features.
  • More than 300 bug fixes.
  • Over 90 tickets dedicated to administration, more than 40 to the block editor.
  • 411 improvements and 486 bug fixes in the editor.

How to Install WordPress 7.0

As with every new version, WordPress 7.0 can be downloaded from the official CMS website. The update can also be performed directly from the admin dashboard:

  1. Go to the Dashboard menu.
  2. Click on the Updates tab.
  3. Start the installation by clicking on Update Now.

In theory, a banner also signals the availability of the update at the top of the interface. Before performing the update, a full backup of the site and database is strongly recommended.
