Meta has recently unveiled a series of updates for its messaging platform WhatsApp, notably introducing “motion photos.” These are essentially mini-videos that bring your photos to life with movement and sound. Additional features are also being launched to enhance user convenience.
True to its reputation for continual improvement, WhatsApp is once again evolving its offerings rather than resting on its laurels. Just after incorporating a message translation feature, Meta has announced six new functionalities designed to streamline user experience and make it more enjoyable. Among these, the highlight is undoubtedly the support for motion photos.
Known as Live Photos on iPhone and Motion Photos on Android, these innovative images are akin to enhanced GIFs or mini-videos. Essentially, they are animated photos enhanced with the sounds from the moment they were captured. Users can now send these directly within a WhatsApp conversation.

Two other additions are particularly noteworthy. The first is the ability to scan documents directly within WhatsApp, eliminating the need to use a separate app and then switch back to the messaging service to send the scanned document. It’s worth mentioning that while this feature was already available on iPhone, it has now been introduced to Android users as well.

The second feature is a new way to search for group conversations. Previously, users had to remember and enter the exact terms used in the group’s name to find it. Now, simply searching for a contact’s name will prompt WhatsApp to display all group conversations that the contact is a part of—similar to the functionality on Messenger. This is indeed a handy improvement.
Lastly, it’s important to highlight two new features powered by Meta’s AI: the customization of chat themes and backgrounds during video calls. Users will also enjoy access to a brand new set of stickers.
