Is Google running out of creative steam? Although Gemini’s models are gaining popularity, particularly in the LLM Arena, Google appears to be consistently trailing behind ChatGPT in the AI innovation race. The most recent instance is the introduction of educational features in Gemini, mainly aimed at students, which comes just a week after OpenAI launched its Study Mode.
Three new features are on the agenda: a Guided Learning mode, integrated visuals, and revision tools.

Gemini has been equipped with a new feature called Guided Learning. This mode is designed to “help you grasp complex topics,” according to Google. In practice, when you explore a topic with this feature enabled, Gemini breaks down the subject into manageable steps so you can understand the underlying concepts.
Whether it’s creating study guides from your course files or explaining difficult concepts through videos and visuals, Gemini works alongside you to ensure you truly learn, Google emphasizes.
This mode is already available to all users and can be activated via the Guided Learning button, found at the bottom of the prompt bar. In the example below, we test the feature by asking Gemini: “How does the mechanism of supply and demand work in a competitive market?” The tool starts with a question which we answer, and then continues its explanation.
Gemini Embraces Visual Learning
The conversational agent now also incorporates new visual capabilities for learning. To aid its explanations, Gemini can now include “images, diagrams, and high-quality YouTube videos directly within the responses,” Google states.
When you ask questions about complex topics like the process of photosynthesis or the parts of a cell, Gemini will proactively integrate visuals to help you understand more easily, explains Google.
Returning to our example about supply and demand. After our initial response, Google follows up with an explanation of the laws of supply and demand, both supplemented with graphs.
Tools for Exam Preparation
Additionally, new tools for preparing for exams have been introduced. For instance, you can ask Gemini to create flashcards to help memorize information or design a quiz.
The features introduced by Google are comparable to ChatGPT’s Study Mode. The integration of visuals is a significant advantage, making the responses more digestible. They are more progressive: Gemini explains concepts step-by-step and progresses by asking questions, whereas ChatGPT adopts a more top-down approach, responding in large text blocks.
