Discover the rankings of the most popular mobile applications in France and globally, as well as those generating the highest user spending.
Sensor Tower, a company specializing in mobile app data analysis, released its Digital Market Index for the first half of 2025 on Tuesday, May 20, 2025. This report highlights the latest mobile app market trends and ranks the most downloaded applications worldwide and in individual countries. Here are the key figures from the first quarter of the year!
ChatGPT Tops Download Charts in France for Q1 2025
In the first quarter of 2025, France saw ChatGPT leading as the most downloaded app on both iOS and Android platforms. OpenAI’s generative AI continues to dominate the market and remains the only AI application in the top 10. The top three rankings remain unchanged from the last quarter of 2024, with Temu and TikTok holding their ground. Notably, the European payment service Wero made a dramatic entry into the top 10, jumping 578 spots to fourth place, surpassing Paylib as one of the most downloaded mobile apps in France.
Globally, TikTok has reclaimed its position as the number one app, pushing Instagram to the second spot. ChatGPT rounds out the top three after moving up three places. Meta’s other applications, WhatsApp and Facebook, follow in fourth and fifth places, respectively. This ranking is heavily dominated by social media platforms, which occupy seven spots in the top 10. ChatGPT, Temu, and CapCut are the only non-social media apps to make the list (see the featured image).
Wero Experiences Explosive Growth in France
As mentioned earlier, Wero has climbed an impressive 578 places since the last Sensor Tower ranking, making it the fastest-growing app in France. The app has capitalized on the decline of Sumeria (formerly Lydia) to carve out a space for itself among online payment services like PayPal and Apple Pay. Wero is ahead of PDF Reader Point and ChatGPT. Additionally, two other generative AI apps, DeepSeek and Le Chat, rank fourth and fifth, respectively. Despite the antitrust lawsuit against Google and the potential breakup of Google Chrome, the web browser has moved up 24 places.
On a global scale, DeepSeek is just outside the top 10 (11th) of the world’s most downloaded apps but is the fastest-growing app this quarter. Following are JioHotstar, a video-on-demand platform launched by Disney+ for the Indian and Indonesian markets, and ChatGPT.
ChatGPT Breaks its Revenue Record on the App
In terms of revenue generated from mobile apps, the top 5 remains unchanged. TikTok holds on to the top spot followed by YouTube and Google One. ChatGPT has moved up two places to sixth position. “Consumers spent over $330 million on the integrated subscription within the ChatGPT app, representing a growth of nearly 50% compared to the fourth quarter of 2024,” Sensor Tower reports.
In France, the top 6 also sees little change from the last quarter of 2024. TikTok continues to lead, followed by Deezer and Google One. ChatGPT also shows significant growth in France, advancing three spots.
