Apple Inc. (AAPL) recently launched a new TV ad called “Harmony” which in 30 seconds highlights iCloud service for iOS and OS X. AAPL has been posting a series of iPhone 4S ads which show the all-new voice assistant Siri and the much improved camera and now with the latest ad the focus has turned to iCloud.

iCloud automatically stores music, photos, apps, calendars, contacts, documents and keeps all your iCloud enabled devices in sync. When Apple introduced iOS 5 during WWDC 2011 Steve Jobs took to the stage to talk about iCloud and repeatedly said, “it just works”. The new TV ad in a similar theme conveys that iCloud is “Automatic. Everywhere.”

The ad begins with the all-new welcome screen in iOS 5 which gives you an option to use iCloud and then goes on to show an album being purchased on iPhone 4S which then shows up on iPad 2 and MacBook Air. Then photos, calendar, app purchases, contacts update and iBooks are all shown to sync between different devices.

With the introduction of iCloud users can not only keep their iOS devices in sync but can also backup to the cloud, set up the device without connecting to iTunes and with iTunes Match they can upload their entire music library to the cloud.

iCloud is a free service available on devices running iOS 5 or higher however, if you need to add more space for backup then you could purchase additional storage right from your device.

During this years WWDC keynote event Apple previewed OS X Lion, iOS 5 and shared its plan for the upcoming cloud based service called iCloud. With no announcement about iPhone 5 the event was completely dedicated to software. The company has now posted videos of WWDC 2011 sessions on iTunes and updated Apple’s developer page to include all that took place during Apple’s full-week event.

The sessions include videos and slideshows for 109 different sessions, covering App Frameworks (32 sessions), Core OS (13 sessions), Developer Tools (20 sessions), Graphics, Media and Games (24 sessions), and Internet and Web (19 sessions.) The videos on the developer page were supposed to be posted earlier but Apple failed to update them, however, now they are available in iTunes.

Registered developers have access to SD or HD video of the event and can get them by visiting the Development Videos page and clicking on “Log in to iTunes” on the bottom left. WWDC is Apple’s annual conference for registered developer’s to come together and explore the latest and greatest offerings from Apple.

iOS and OS X developers can now relive the conference with over 109 videos, covering every major WWDC topic in detail, and perhaps get ready for WWDC 2012.

Apple’s WWDC 2011 keynote just as expected focussed on software updates and cloud based services. Apple gave us an overview of Mac OS X Lion, announced iOS 5 and finally unveiled the upcoming cloud based service cloud iCloud. You can now stream the video online on Apple’s website (link at the bottom).

Mac OS X Lion will be available for purchase from the Mac App Store for $29.99 in July and iOS 5 is expected to be available this fall. iCloud is closely tied to the new software update and will provide seamless syncing between devices and the content you access most often.

It was widely believed that iOS 5 will introduce revamped notifications and include system wide Twitter integration and that’s exactly what Apple did. In addition to these the Cupertino based company has introduced iMessage (think BBM for iOS devices) which will allow you send text messages, photos videos, contacts and more to your friends and family who own an iOS device.

Apple has greatly improved the camera app and also introduced two new iOS apps called Newsstand and Reminders. One of the best features about iOS 5 is that now you’ll be able to wirelessly sync your devices with Mac or PC so no more using the same old USB cable.

There was no announcement related to new hardware so no iPhone 5 / 4S during this years WWDC keynote event.

Unlike previous WWDC keynote events where Apple would announce next gen iPhone this year the company is focussing on software. iOS 5, the next generation software update for iOS devices, will be previewed during Steve Jobs keynote later today.

It is widely believed that Apple will completely revamp the current obtrusive notification system with something which is more elegant and user friendly. The company may have hired Peter Hajas the developer of a popular jailbreak tweak which replaces Apple’s notification system with an unobtrusive way of showing and managing notifications below the status bar.

Now, TechCrunch has published a photo of what they believe could be the new notification system in iOS 5. The publication later updated their post saying that according to their sources its the “right idea”.

Notifications that come down from the top bar could be how Apple ends up doing things in iOS 5. After all, this would mimic already existing functionality — when tethering, a blue strip appears along the top; when on the phone, it’s a green strip. Might notifications (or at least Twitter notifications) produce a gray strip?

Twitter integration is expected to be major part of the keynote event. The new image upload service announced by the social networking site is believed to be tied to photos app on iOS devices natively. If rumors about Twitter being integrated at system level turn out to be true then we could be seeing much deeper integration and not just limited to uploading photos.

Robert Scoble recently shared that he has actual knowledge about iOS 5 and Twitter integration and expects it to be “huge”.

Next week will be a huge week for those of us who have lived on Twitter for last few years. Apple is building Twitter in deeply into iOS 5.

Going by what Apple thinks about processes running in the background it would be unlikely for the company to introduce widgets which require constant connection to stay updated. However, the rumor mill has been consistently speculating that widgets would indeed make its appearance in iOS 5.

A recent report published by LATimes now claims to reveal extra details about Apple’s upcoming cloud based service.

The publication believes that Apple will roll out iCloud as a free service for a limited time period for those customers who already buy music from iTunes which will allow them to upload their purchases to the cloud. Users will be able to later access their music from any web browser or an iOS device.

Eventually, the company will charge a subscription fee of $25/year for the same service. It is believed that the Cupertino based company could also be looking at ways to integrate advertisements into its services. However, it wasn’t clear if the ads will be applicable for paid users too.

We previously reported that Apple has reportedly signed licensing deals with four of the major music labels which include Warner Music Group, EMI Music Group, Universal Music Group and Sony Music Entertainment. Additionally, we are also hearing that users might be allowed to upload Movies and TV shows.

The rumor about a new iPhone 5 / 4S has spread across the web and has caused many to believe that it may just be Steve Jobs’ “One More Thing”. Apple earlier in the week announced that during the WWDC keynote event Jobs will offer an extensive look at Mac OS X Lion, iOS 5 (next iteration of iOS) and iCloud (Apple’s upcoming cloud based service).

An event based entirely on software is a very unlikely move for Apple. The rumor mill believes that iPhone 5 / 4S could be unveiled at this years WWDC as a surprise. Fifth gen iPhone according to various reports we’ve published will feature a dual-core A5 chip, an 8 megapixel camera and support both GSM and CDMA networks on one global device.

Unlike previous years Apple has already shared details about the conference in their press release. Could this be a calculated move to suddenly unveil the next gen iPhone when everyone least expects it?

Apple might not introduce an all-new-design for its smartphone this year and A5 chip has already been introduced with iPad 2. So, the basic hardware changes Apple could be looking at might just be ready for the next gen iPhone.

Whether the iPhone 5 / 4S is revealed or not, Apple will definitely be putting on a big event for investors and customers alike, improving their services and exploring new environments with cloud based offerings.

Apple has cut a licensing deal with Universal Music Group according to the latest report published by CNET. This will enable Apple’s iCloud music store to offer songs from the largest of the four top record companies. It is widely believed that Apple has now signed deals with all the top four record companies as well as major music publishers, giving Apple’s iCloud streaming service a major head start.

The Cupertino outfit on Tuesday announced that it would unveil the highly anticipated cloud based service called iCloud on June 6 at its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in San Francisco. However, Apple did not mention whether iCloud will have any music streaming features or any aspects of the rumored TV shows and movies.

Sources at CNET have reported that revenue from iCloud song sales will be split, where the labels will get 58 percent, and publishers will receive 12 percent. Apple will take 30 percent as they do with all other services they currently offer. The sources also reported that streaming will not be available on Monday but will be offered soon and that the Apple digital locker will store only music purchased from iTunes in the beginning.

Apple is said to have plans to store songs purchased from outside iTunes sometime in the future, perhaps after Apple solidifies it’s servers and expands the North Carolina data center.

Apple has announced that it will be discussing iOS 5, Mac OS X Lion and iCloud at next week’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). Apple’s CEO Steve Jobs will be making an appearance in order to deliver the keynote presentation on Monday, June 6th at 10AM PST.

Apple has been wrapping up deals with music labels and publishers to allow users to stream purchased music to their computers and other devices through the service, which will likely be integrated into iOS 5 and Mac OS X Lion. Apple is all about integration, taking one service and assimilating it into all of their products (eg. iBooks). AppleInsider released a clearer shot of the banner (seen below), highlighting iOS 5, iCloud and Mac OS X Lion.

It’s increasingly becoming clear that iPhone 5 / 4S won’t be a part of this years conference. However, if Apple restricts iOS 5 to just iPhone 4 and drops support for iPhone 3GS then we can be sure that fifth gen iPhone could be available in September during the annual music event.

Apple recently confirmed that Steve Jobs will kick off the event. According to the latest reports Twitter is expected to be integrated at system-level in iOS 5. Twitter Inc. on Wednesday announced its own image services and the announcement is perfectly timed as iOS could be leveraging this functionality in iOS 5.

The latest offering from Twitter not only allows you to upload and share images but also presents them in search results using hashtags. Given the interest in photography apps and iPhone being the most used device to upload images to flickr we can certainly see the system-level twitter integration being a huge hit among avid twitter users.

If rumors are to be believed then Apple could be looking at building somthing called “MediaStreams” which will allow users set up “Photo Streams” and allow users’ friends to ‘subscribe’ or ‘follow’ for updates. The Cupertino based company could also be looking at introducing “Find my friends” which will be closely tied to the new social networking features.

We have been reporting on various rumors which outline the upcoming features in iOS 5. It is widely believed that iOS 5 will introduce a new notification system, widgets, cloud services tied and a completely revamped MobileMe.

Twitter and other social networking platforms being integrated at a system-level in iOS 5 certainly sounds very exciting and it will be interesting to see what Apple has in store for us.

We have been discussing Apple’s upcoming cloud services called “iCloud” for a while and now just before the WWDC keynote event its showing all signs of coming to life. Patently Apple recently reported that Apple Inc. has applied for “iCloud” trademark in Europe under “12 distinct international classes” which cover a wide range of services the company could offer. In its application Apple mentions services like delivering digital music by telecommunications, electronic storage, online social networking services, multimedia content for a fee or pre-paid subscription, computer software, electronic books and magazines, entertainment, photographic services, business management and advertising services, games, headgear and digital devices/computers.

Google and Amazon already have a head start over Apple in cloud based services however, only Apple is believed to have secured license deals with major music labels which include Sony, Warner Music and EMI. This will give Apple an edge over its competitors. iCloud could simply scan the computer and automatically sync songs, movies and TV shows to the cloud giving access to the content you own anytime and anywhere.

Worldwide Developers Conference will kick off with a keynote event by Steve Jobs and other Apple executives. Unlike, previous WWDC this year the primary focus will be software where the “next generation software” will be unveiled. Mac OS X Lion is believed to have reached final stages of testing and could be made available after the event on June 06. The latest developer build of Snow Leopard updates Mac App Store so that your Mac is ready for the upgrade.

With a constant flow of news and reports Apple certainly has been successful in building up the excitement as the event is now just 4 days away. On Tuesday, iWork suite of productivity apps were updated to a universal binary which means that now you can install Pages, Keynote and Numbers on your iPhone or iPod touch.

Earlier today, Apple announced that Steve Jobs will take the stage at next week’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). They even took a step further, pre-announcing that Jobs will introduce the company’s “iCloud” service.

So far, any news on Apple’s iCloud service mentioned Apple striking deals with music labels and publishers, the idea of movies and TV shows were never really put in the spotlight. Now, CNET is reporting that Apple is working towards including movies and TV shows into their iCloud streaming service.

“In the past several weeks, Apple executives have stepped up their attempts to convince some of the major Hollywood film studios to issue licenses that would enable Apple to store its customers’ movies on the company’s servers, two sources close to the negotiations told CNET. Apple began discussing a cloud service with the studios over a year ago.”

The report also mentions Apple’s negotiations with the film studios are ongoing, but a problem with a major cable network, HBO, may delay the process to bring TV shows on board. This problem with HBO is an agreement between the cable channel and Warner Brothers, 20th Century Fox, and NBC Universal that requires those studios to stop sales and distribution of their content whenever it is being aired on HBO. This may pose a problem with Apple as they strive to keep their services consistent and may also affect customers who would like to watch content using the service at any time.

It is uncertain at this point, where Apple stands on TV shows and movies as it is unlikely that they will strike a deal by next week’s announcement. TV content for iCloud is currently based entirely on speculation at this point, possibly stemming from Apple’s current “Multi-Pass” and “Season Pass” in iTunes which allows customers to purchase larger bundles of content at once. However, rumors about Apple’s inclusion of TV shows and movies are currently overshadowed by negotiations with music labels, looking to provide iTunes customers with content.

While TV Shows and Movies are a big part of Apple’s iTunes revenue stream, music labels have been in the works for Apple’s iCloud service and is likely to make an appearance before any other type of content.

On Tuesday Apple issued a press release where the company confirmed that during WWDC 2011 Apple’s CEO Steve Jobs will unveil Mac OS X Lion, iOS 5 and iCloud. The announcement came in as a surprise as Apple usually does not reveal major product / software announcements in a press release before the keynote event.

Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) will kick off on Monday, June 06 at 10:00 a.m and Steve Jobs will be present for the keynote presentation to announce Apple’s “next generation software”.

It’s interesting to note that the press release very clearly mentions “iOS 5″ and “iCloud” as two out of the three major announcements. Previously, whenever Apple would hold an event to discuss the future of iOS the company never really specifically mentioned the version. Even though the rumor mill had been widely discussing Apple’s cloud services we were not expecting Apple to mention that it would be part of the keynote event in a press release.

It’s not clear why Apple PR chose to reveal these details however, one of the more obvious reasons could that the company probably wanted people to know what to expect from the event in order to avoid expectations regarding hardware. Obviously, Apple could still go ahead and announce the iPhone 5 / 4S.

We could just be seeing a preview of Apple’s “upcoming cloud services” and the service could be available as beta for the initial period and then roll out world wide in a few months.

We are expecting Mac OS X Lion to be available for download on June 06 while iOS 5 just like iCloud could be made available only to developers initially.

The next gen software for iOS devices is believed to revamp the notification system, introduce widgets and offer subscription based music streaming service.

We recently reported that Apple has closed licensing deals with three out of the four major music labels for their soon to be announced digital music locker service. This gives Apple great advantage over its competitors, Google and Amazon, who launched similar service without the license deals.

Music labels are always looking for new revenue streams and it’s possible that Apple probably had to pay a huge amount in-order to secure the rights for its new music streaming service. Apple’s iCloud service is widely believed to be tied to MobileMe ($99/year) which already allows users to keep their Mail, Safari Bookmarks, Documents etc. on their Macs and iOS devices in Sync.

BusinessWeek recently published a report in which they detailed Apple’s iCloud service:

Apple will be able to scan customers’ digital music libraries in iTunes and quickly mirror their collections on its own servers, say three people briefed on the talks. If the sound quality of a particular song on a user’s hard drive isn’t good enough, Apple will be able to replace it with a higher-quality version. Users of the service will then be able to stream, whenever they want, their songs and albums directly to PCs, iPhones, iPads, and perhaps one day even cars.

A patent application recently published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office also revealed some features about iCloud service which the Cupertino Calif. based company could be looking into. The patent basically explains that any song you want to access from the cloud would require your device to store a minimum of 30 seconds preview. This would allow the user to skip songs without any lag as the preview could be used for the first 30 seconds while the track stored on the cloud can buffer and offer seamless experience.

During WWDC 2011 Apple is expected to share details about the future of iOS and preview Mac OS X Lion. iOS 5 is believed to finally introduce cloud based services which Apple has been preparing for since a long time.

We’ve reported on various rumors and reports which suggest that the next major software update, iOS 5, will indeed revamp current notifications.

Push notifications introduced as a part of iPhone OS 3.0 turned out to be a great way to maintain persistent IP connection to the phone and let third-party developers ping Apple’s notification server to send you alerts. However, as more and more developers adopted the notification system it was clear that iOS now required a “notification manager”.

If you receive a notification the current version of iOS requires you to take action right at that moment or else you won’t be able to see what the notification was about. Of-course the app icon will put on a badge so that you can take action later but this isn’t the most efficient manner in which notifications could be handled.

Android OS has been repeatedly praised for offering a better way to handle notifications not just relating to third party apps but also include app updates, SMS alerts and more.

If the latest rumors are to be believed then we can be sure about Apple finally responding to customer requests for a better way to manage notifications in iOS 5. According to a new report published by TechCrunch Apple intends to offer a “completely revamped” notifications system and include “widgets” too.

We believe that a better notification system could certainly be in the works but we are not entirely convinced about widgets. Apple’s focus has always been to provide good battery life while making sure that users get the best performance. So, unless Apple engineers have come up with a unique way to let users access widgets without compromising on battery life and CPU performance the support for widgets would certainly have to wait.

Many users and designers have posted their ideas and concepts for Apple’s notification system and widgets. Jan-Michael Cart recently released his version and posted the concept video on YouTube:

iOS 5 is also rumored to feature deeper voice integration by utilizing Nuance’s voice recognition technology and Siri’s AI based search capabilities.

Apple is expected to release Mac OS X Lion during WWDC which is scheduled to begin on June 06, 2011. According to a new report published by AppleInsider Apple is expected to make the latest version of Mac OS X available for download via Mac App Store.

According to people familiar with the matter Mac OS X 10.7 Lion will mark the beginning of a new way to distribute OS upgrades for Mac. The introduction of Mac App Store shows Apple’s commitment to offer easy access to software and eliminate the need for boxed software sold at retail stores.

In addition to downloadable OS upgrade Apple will also offer optical disc for people who don’t have access to fast Internet connection or prefer buying the disc.

Apple’s MacBook Air does not ship with a SuperDrive so offering Mac OS X Lion via Mac App Store will certainly help Apple in introducing Mac App Store to new users which in turn could encourage them to even buy their software from Apple’s store on the Mac.

Mac App Store just like the App Store for iOS devices makes it really easy for users to find the software they are looking for, purchase it with their iTunes account and install with in just one click. This really brings the simplicity of iOS devices back to the Mac.

Apple has been seeding beta versions of Lion to developers via redeem codes which can only be used on the Mac App Store so the final version being made available via Mac App Store comes as no surprise.

Today’s reports from AppleInsider amongst others raise the possibility Apple is seeking to bring ‘deeply integrated’ voice control to the platform.

Citing TechCrunch as the source, AppleInsider speculates that the new and improved voice integration could have something to do with Apple’s purchase of Siri last year. Siri Assistant is an iOS app that allowed users to accomplish simple tasks using plain English.

With this in mind, it’s possible Apple is trying to enable completely hands-free operation of its devices, bringing us closer and closer to the Star Trek world of speech controlled computers.

Couple with an earlier report, again from AppleInsider, that Apple is looking to hire a new ‘iOS Speech Operations Engineer’ or three, and the rumour starts to appear to have legs.

iOS is expected to put in an appearance this fall, with new features (hopefully) abound. High on the wish-list is a new notification system to replace the ageing solution we all know and hate.

Evidence is mounting that Apple will break from tradition (if 3 years can be a tradition!) by not announcing iPhone 5 at its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC 2011) this year.

Historically WWDC has been the place Apple has announced its latest and greatest iPhone, with iPhone 5 expected to be next. Now though, it’s looking increasingly likely this year’s conference will be software-only (iOS 5 and Mac OS).

MacRumors cites Jim Dalrymple’s post on LoopInsight as proof we’re not going to see the iPhone 5 just yet, with the aforementioned Dalrymple saying the most we can hope for is a preview of a new version of iOS.

Apple closed the door this morning on any speculation that it would announce new hardware at its Worldwide Developers conference saying it would focus on iOS and Mac OS.

Apple’s apparent focus on software in its WWDC announcement backs up what my own sources are saying about the annual conference. That is, expect a software show in 2011, not a hardware event.

What’s even more interesting is news from Macotakara, amongst others, that the iPhone 5 won’t actually be available this year at all, with 2012 more likely. The site has a good track record with all things Apple, and their sources say iPhone 5 will not begin its final manufacturing run until late 2011.

The recent Verizon iPhone 4 appearance and impending white iPhone 4 release mean a delayed iPhone 5 could make sense for Apple as a way of not upsetting all the buyers that made the iPhone 4 a Verizon record-breaker.

We at Touch Reviews just can’t quite get our heads around a year without a new iPhone though. Say it ain’t so Apple!

Apple on Monday announced that it will be holding the annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC 2011) from June 6 to June 10. The five-day conference will be held at San Francisco’s Moscone West where more than 5,000 iOS and Mac developers would be in attendance.

The theme for this years WWDC is “the future of iOS and Mac OS” as Apple plans to introduce iOS 5 and Mac OS X Lion. The Cupertino, Calif. based company generally holds a special media event to give us a sneak peek into the next major version of iOS, however this year Mac OS and iOS 5 will become the focus area for this years WWDC.

WWDC 2011 highlights:

Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing said, “If you are an iOS or Mac OS X software developer, this is the event that you do not want to miss.” Apple in their press release say that we can expect “exciting demonstrations of the new kinds of apps” which hints at introduction of new API’s for developers and more features for the users.

What are your expectations and predictions for this years WWDC? Let us know what you think in the comments below.

We all expected to hear at least some tentative details about iOS 5 when the iPad 2 was announced, but alas no information was forthcoming. According to TechCrunch the reason we’re not hearing anything could be rather simple – it’s not ready yet.

In the TechCrunch post MG Siegler writes that, according to sources, the next major release of Apple’s mobile operating system has been pushed back to a Fall release. With major releases of iOS tending to arrive with a new iPhone it was expected we would have heard at least some details by now, but now it is suspected (by TechCrunch at least) that the iPhone 5 will actually be powered by iOS 4 with an update coming at a later date.

Other claims to come out of Siegler’s post are:

The most interesting tidbit is the mention of the much-anticipated ‘music locker’. With Apple buying LaLa in 2009 a streaming music service has been on the cards for some time now while the music industry has been keen to avoid giving Apple any more power than it already has in the music business. If a deal has indeed been struck then that could be huge news for music fans.

We at TouchReviews can cope with a delayed iOS 5 if it means we’re in for something special when it finally lands on our various iDevices. Just please Apple, don’t give us a couple of new options and call it a new version! We want new notifications as a priority!

Make it so guys!

Based on previous Apple WWDC bookings it seems likely that this is the date for WWDC this year.

WWDC used to be the event that new Mac operating systems were exclusively previewed at, before becoming more iOS centric over the last couple of years. Something that drew a little bit of criticism from Apple traditionalists last year.

But this year both the iOS and OS X camps should expect a very exciting time. Apple’s latest desktop operating system OS X Lion is likely to be at least one of the two major focuses of the event, as well as the inevitable iOS news, updates and developer sessions.

There are also some similar bookings at the same location for May 10th – 11th, and June 22nd-23rd. Which some are suggesting are likely launch dates for the iPad 2 and iPhone 5, respectively.

We think the May date is a little late for the iPad 2 – which has already gone into production. But the iPhone 5 date seems likely.

Are you excited about WWDC and OS X Lion? Or more interested in new iPhones and iPads? Have your say in the comments…
