With the new iPhone 5  introduction around the corner, more and more parts leaks and photos are being released on the web. On Monday, MacRumors reader, Michael Rou got hold of what he claimed to be pre-production cases for the iPhone 5 and iPad mini. The reader then took images of the cases and posted them on Flickr, while comparing it to the iPad 3 and the current iPhone 4S.

The cases, leaked from designs in the Foxconn factory point to the iPad Mini being a much smaller 7.85” with a smaller bezel as opposed to the current 9.7” screen on the iPad. The iPad Mini is however, expected to retain the same aspect ratio and resolution of the iPad 2 at 1024×768. Apple is likely reverting back to specs for the iPad 2 because it is aiming for a lower price point and perhaps cannot include some of the higher powered technology such as 4G LTE in the Mini.

Rou notes that the iPad Mini case sports a headphone jack on top, unlike the newer designs on the next generation iPhone 5. The iPhone 5 case is 4 inches tall, as numerous other web reports have suggested and in the photos, appears to be taller than the current iPhone 4S. The iPhone 5 is expected at Apple’s media event on September 12th, while the iPad Mini is expected to follow suit in October.

There is clearly a market for cases that prevent the more clumsy amongst us from damaging our beloved iPhones. Two of the most prevalent cases in that market at the moment are the Otterbox and LifeProof cases which not only protect your investment from drops but in the case of the LifeProof case from water too.

Well now there is a new contender to the crown in the shape of the Cellhelmet case from cellhelmet.com which not only promises to protect your iPhone from damage but is willing to put it’s money where it’s mouth is in the form of a years worth of accidental damage coverage for a whole year.

Think about that for a second, you purchase a case for $44.99 and not only do you get a good looking case but you also get a unlimited repairs and one full replacement for just the cost of a $50 handling fee per claim. Even with the handling charge it’s still a pretty staggering really!

Cellhelmet iPhone Case Review 5-3

Beyond the insurance the case offers a few benefits over its competitors in its space. Firstly the case has a good slim line form factor especially compared to the Otterbox which means it’s not going to add too much bulk when you are carrying it. Secondly it doesn’t have a built in screen protector like both the previously mentioned case, so if you like the direct feel of your iPhones glass then this is the case for you.

The case is made from a strong rubber case which balances the benefits of providing protection to your iPhone along with the benefit of being able to easily access all buttons and ports but also makes it easy to take on and off of your iPhone should you wish too. (Please note, your iPhone is not covered by the accidental damage insurance if you aren’t using the case at the time!)

Cellhelmet iPhone Case Review 3-1-2

The cases come in a clear or smoke shades and can be customized further by the use of 2 interchangeable backplates that fit inside the case to provide additional protection and a level of color customization. That being said the backplate barely showed through on the smoke version of the case that I had.

Cellhelmet iPhone Case Review -1-1

Overall the quality of the case is solid too, it feels likes it’s protecting your phone and while the smoothness of the rubber may not appeal to everyone it provides good grip and is robust. The only slight negative point about the case is some remnants of the machining process being left on one side of the case, it’s only a minor point though.

If you want to protect your iPhone and don’t want the bulk of the Otterbox or the restricted access of the LifeProof case along with a year long insurance policy against accidental damage then you should head over to cellhelmet.com and check out their Cellhelmet iPhone Case.

Apple is expected to introduce the iPhone 5 next month, with reports that there may also be two new cases introduced alongside the fifth gen iPhone. However, prior to this announcement, Apple has added a new color to the Bumper case line-up, the first change to case line since its introduction with the iPhone 4. On Tuesday, Apple went ahead and added a (PRODUCT) RED version of the Bumper case for the iPhone 4S / 4 to the already available assortment of colors.

Currently, Apple offers black, white, blue, pink, orange, and green, all of which were introduced in 2010 and did not experience any major changes, aside from a change in ringer switch size to accommodate the iPhone 4S.

Apple released the Smart Cover with the iPad 2 early last year and since then the cover has become a model for numerous third party accessory makers who have developed their own versions. However, according to a patent application put out by the United States Patent & Trademark Office, it appears that Apple is looking to take the technology in the Smart Cover one step further.

Since then publicizing of the patent, speculation on the web suggests that a new Smart Cover with a flexible AMOLED display, and even solar panels and a keyboard may be part of Apple’s upgrade to the cover. The touchscreen display on the cover is expected to display information such as emails, messages, and calendar events. The patent suggests that the inner cover would double as a keyboard and could house other technology such as a solar panel and the outer edge would have the ability to control other media such as music with pause and play controls.

According to Apple’s explanation in the patent, the Multi-Touch display in the cover “greatly enhances the overall functionality of the tablet device”. Considering that the current Smart Cover connects to the iPad via magnets, the Smart Cover in the patent would likely have to have some form of inductive charging to power the display and pull up information.

The patent lists the inventor of the tech as Fletcher Rothkopf, currently a product manager at Apple but has also dealt with design and iPod engineering. With this new Smart Cover, Apple can very well revolutionize what cases can do on a device and instead of being just a protective covering and an afterthought, can actually assist in the functionality of the device itself.

Apple’s iPad is one of the leading tablet computers out on the market, and rumors in recent months have suggested that the Cupertino, Calif., company is planning to unveil a smaller “iPad Mini” to take on 7” tablets from other competitors such as Google and Samsung. Gotta Be Mobile has posted images of a physical model of what the iPad Mini may look like. The model looks to be similar in size to the rumored 7.85” display and sports the new smaller dock connector previously seen on leaked parts of the next generation iPhone 5.

The model is not made of materials that would likely appear in the final device, however, it does appear to be a case mold and shows the shape of the rumored device. It is unclear whether this could point to a finalized shape and size, but that could be subject to change based on Apple’s decisions on screen size and technology inside. Case designs are normally accurate but can also provide misleading information as cases can be made entirely off of speculation and based on rumors being reported on the web.

The report mentions that in a measure of pixel count from the model, the iPad Mini will be approximately 213 mm by 143 mm, slightly thinner than the full size 9.7 inch iPad which comes in at 185.67mm wide, 241.3mm tall, and 9.39mm thick.

Google’s Nexus 7 tablet has a width of 120mm which means that the iPad Mini, if our calculations are close, might be around 23.67mm wider than the Nexus 7. The Nexus 7 tablet measures in at 198.5mm high which means that the iPad Mini may be a little taller than Google’s 7-inch tablet.

If rumors about iPad Mini turn out to be true then we could expect the release date to be around October timeframe same as the next generation iPhone 5 and the public release of iOS 6.

Back in April we reviewed a couple of skins for the iPhone from iCoverSkin.com and were impressed how it looked, felt and the choices you had while purchasing the skins.

Well now we’ve got our hands on a Brushed Blue skin from iCoverSkin.com for the new iPad which will set you back $29.99, unless you win one in the compitition that is detailed below.

The Brushed Blue skin contains both the front and the back of the iPad but as they are two separate pieces you can either use them both or just one depending on what other kind of case or screen protector you are using.

Talking of screen protectors and cases the iPad version, just like the previously reviewed iPhone skin, doesn’t contain a screen protector, and while it can be applied over the top of one it can cause problems if you don’t position it right first time.

With cases though the thinness of the skin means that it should be compatible with most cases and fully supports the iPhone smart cover. In fact iCoverSkin also sell their own smart covers that match the Brushed Blue skin.

Putting the skin onto your device can take a little bit of time, especially if you want great long lasting results. If you’ve done this kind of thing before though there’s nothing really new to the process although I did learn a great tip from the video guide provided by iCoverSkin which you can see here and that was to use the back paper to temporarily prevent the skin from sticking to the iPad while you line it up.

With this tip I was able to get both the back and front of the skin applied first time without the need of a hair dryer which then recommend to back the skin more flexible during placement.

I’m very pleased with the results too, if you have a ‘nude’ iPad at the moment the skin will not only provide protection from nicks and scratches but also provides extra grip too while only adding minimal bulk.

As mentioned earlier if you would like to win one of iCoverSkins iPhone skins you can Like iCoverSkin.com on Facebook for a chance to win one of our brand new iPhone Full Skin (Retail Value $29.99) every two weeks! No purchase necessary.

iCoverSkin Review

The are more cases on the market than you can shake a stick at but for some people adding bulk to their iPhone is not an option, yet they still want to add some individual creativity to their iPhone to make it unique or add protection.

For those people there are skins, thin, sticky covers that adhere securely and can be as creative as any mind can be.

One company that provides such things is iCoverSkin who not only provide skins for iPhones but also for iPads and MacBooks as well as other non-Apple products too.

Their latest range of skins are the brushed metal and carbon fiber range which give a great look and feel to your iOS Device when applied. They also come in a range of colors, blue, black, titanium, steal and even brushed gold if you want to go for some serious bling.

Applying them is easy too, just four easy steps, clean, peel, align and apply will have your new skin on in next to no time. I use a screen protector with my iPhone and while iCoverSkin.com advises that you can apply the skin over the screen protector I chose not to and applied it directly to my iPhone 4S. An option to have a screen protector cut to fit or included with the skin would be a nice option.

The iCoverSkin’s use quality 3M products which provide great adhesion to your iPhone and yet if your placement is initially off a little you can easily re-align it with no problems and without spoiling the look. In fact this is exactly what I did and even after 3 attempts to align the skin correctly it still stuck securely and looks great.

What’s really nice about iCoverSkin is that you can purchase as little or as much of the skin as you need. You can buy just the back, back and front or the complete kit which will provide front, back and side skins.

As you would expect all relevant cut outs are provided including a cut out for the Apple logo on the back of you iPhone which is a nice touch and leaves everything accessible.

The skins change the texture of the iPhone and while it’s debatable as to whether or not it provides you with more grip it’s certainly a nice change to the naked feel of the ‘nude’ iPhone.

If you are looking for a stylish and easy way to customize your iPhone without the bulk of a case then head on over to iCoverSkin.com now and pick yourself out a style and design that suits you.

Prices for the iPhone Carbon Fiber and Brushed Metal skins start at $29.95 and can be purchased from www.iCoverSkin.com for immediate delivery.

Ballistic Case Review

The Ballistic Tough Jacket case for iPad 2 is a tough shock resistant case with a sleek look. It has a certain rugged appearance that reassures you that it is going to be able to stand up to some punishment without being an eye sore. A practical case for almost any type of use.

The Tough Jacket really impressed me with its protection. There are three layers of protection of this bad boy! The inner most layer is silicone to aid with shock. The next layer is an impact resistant hard plastic layer. Only to be followed by a yet another layer of shock absorbing polymer material. Overkill, you ask? Absolutely not when considering that you are protecting a $500 item at its lowest price.

I found this iPad accessory incredibly useful and it isn’t just because I have a young child. Clumsily grabbing my iPad when I get up in the morning at 5:30AM sometimes results in a tumble. The Tough Jacket easily handles short tumbles with no damage to the iPad whatsoever. I wouldn’t recommend you toss your iPad around but this case can handle it. Also at a price of $69.99, it is cheaper than most tough cases and looks awesome.

The appearance of this Tough Jacket is what shines through almost as much as its durability. From the moment you set eyes on this accessory you’ll love the sleek yet protective design. I felt like the case made other cases of the Tough Jacket type pale in comparison. I was graciously provided with the Red and Black version of the Tough Jacket and was impressed as soon as i got it out of the box. The combination of silicone layer provides a great grip while absorbing shock and the plastic layer gives you the sturdiness you expect with such a case.

The practicality of the case only further proves the point that this case really seeks full protection of your iPad. I’ve listed the case that surrounds the back half of the iPad but there is also a front cover. The front cover is something i usually have mixed emotions about. I always ask myself, what do i do with it when i’m not using it? This one secures itself to the back portion of the case and even has a sweet kickstand to put the iPad on full display. All while leaving every port accessible. The raised corners also keep the iPad from ever touching any surface for yet another layer of protection.

Overall I am really impressed with the case and would highly recommend it to anyone who is seeking a tough yet highly aesthetic case for their iPad. The case can be purchased from here for $69.99.

Wood iPhone Case from Photojojo Review

We’ve all see wooden iPhone 4S cases before, maybe not in person but certainly in magazines and on gadget shows. They make seem great in theory but are they really practical or should they just remain a novelty item?

Well about 10 days ago I recieved a wooden iPhone 4S case from Photojojo, a company more renowned for its camera accessories than its iPhone cases, and I’ve been using it ever since.

The twist with this case that enables it to fit in with the other items sold at Photojojo is the fact that the case is modeled to look like a camera.

The case comes in two parts, the top half slides down over the top of the phone while the bottom slides up and interlocks with the top piece. It’s a snug fit and the lining on the inside of the case ensures that the case doesn’t easily slide off.

The finish is smooth and the whole case is lighter than I expected to be and if you’re worried that you may get a splinter I don’t think you have anything to worry about.

The case provides easy access to all the ports and buttons including the camera lens. The camera design on the back acts as iPhone camouflage when taking pictures making it look like, from some angle at least, like you are using an old school camera.

If you’re concerned about the environment then there is no need to be as the trees used in these cases come from sustainable forests and while at $42 it may not be the cheapest case you can get its certainly eye-catching and unique. You can purchase the case from here plus they’ll throw in a free screen protector too!

The wooden iPhone 4 / 4S camera case from Photojojo is both quirky, unique and practical in equal measure making it an easy decision to purchase if you want to stand out from the crowd, especially if you have a passion for photography.

LifeProof Case Review for iPhone 4S: The Only Case You Need

The number of iPhone 4S sold over the holiday period continue to astound  and this can only mean that the numbers of people carrying an iPhone 4S with them continues to skyrocket.

There is of course an inherent risk in carrying around such an expensive investment with you everywhere you go and that’s in damaging it by dropping it, getting it wet, dirty or scratching it with a million and one things that it comes into contact everyday. And this increases if you take part in any activity in which you want to have your phone with you or if you are simply clumsy!

For as many ways that there are to damage your iPhone there are as many cases to protect it and I’ve had many of them. However, whichever case I’ve had I always felt that I’ve still had to protect my iPhone 4S especially from the inherent fear of water damage. This is no longer the case though as my iPhone is now wrapped in in a LifeProof case.

The LifeProof case is like nothing I have ever had, a case that protects your iPhone from drops, dirt, extreme temperatures and most importantly for me water, yes water. I’ve lost a couple of devices via water, one a simple drop out of a shirt pocket into a bowl of water and another via a trip through a washing machine. I also always have my iPhone with me in the bathroom, in the kitchen, by the pool, in fact it never leaves my side so having it in a case that protects it from any potential exposure to water has to be a good thing.

One thing that has put me off of other full protection cases have been the bulk of the cases, this is not the situation with the LifeProof case though as while it inevitably adds bulk it’s the minimum amount required considering the protection it offers.

The LifeProof comes beautifully packaged in a box that both shows off the case itself and all of the protection it offers. The total package contains the LifeProof case, a cleaning cloth and an adapter for the headphone socket which enables you to use your LifeProof with headphones and keep it waterproof and a spare headphone socket plug.

Putting the case on your phone correctly is key to ensuring that it stays water tight and this is covered by a range of videos that are made available to you to watch via the LifeProof website. All the videos are iPhone compatible of course and aren’t very long but are definitely worthy of a little of your time to ensure you do things correctly.

One of the steps that is highly recommended is the thorough cleaning of your iPhone to ensure that it remains both water tight and free from dust inside the case that could scratch the device. This is easily done with the supplied cleaning cloth and then you are ready to fit the case. To be fair putting your iPhone into the case is no different than any other similar full cover case, the only differance is that you need to ensure that not only is the seal around the top, bottom and sides of the case is free from dust, hairs or any other debris but is also fully snapped shut.

The final steps are to insert waterproof headphone plug and the door that allows access to the charging port at the bottom of the case. These two items enable you to fully use the case with the LifeProof case on, removing the headphone plug allows you to fit most headphone jacks while opening the charge port door enables you to charge your phone. Obviously opening both of the access points will deem the case not watertight any more, however LifeProof have thought of that too and that’s where the included headphone adapter comes in.

The headphone adapter screws into the case provides a watertight seal and still enables you to plug in your headphones while the dock extender that can be purchased seperately will allow any 3rd party adapter to connect to your iPhone while keeping your phone LifeProof’d too.

I’ve been using the case for about 3 weeks now and I’ve found no urge to remove my iPhone from my case, in fact the confidence that the case provides allowing me to enjoy my iPhone even more than I used to, if that’s possible! All the buttons are accessible and the built in screen protector works very well, in fact as a former user of an InvisibleScreen I’m impressed with the touch control and feel that I get with the LifeProof screen protector that’s not stuck to the iPhones screen.

In the time that I was using the LifeProof case I have been debating testing the waterproof feature of this case. At first I was reluctant, however after using the device with wet hands in the kitchen and bathroom and also while out in the rain with no detremental affects I decided to take the plunge as I had no reason to doubt the authenticity of LifeProof’s claims.

The videos that LifeProof providers demonstrate the case’s attributes are impressive, however due to my vicinity to a beach I decided that I would have to go a little lower in the production value department, the results can be seen below but are equally as impressive and I look forward to putting my LifeProof to the test further the next time I go on vacation.

Whether you are an outdoor enthusiast, sports person, have young children or are quite simple prone to clumsiness LifeProof is your only option when it comes to iPhone cases, in fact as soon as you wrap you iPhone in one the only question you’ll be asking yourself is why you didn’t do it earlier.

InvisibleSHIELD by Zagg for iPhone 4S and iPad 2 Review: I love to take care of my iPhone4S  for two main reasons. Firstly I like the way it looks, especially sans case and secondly I like to keep it in great condition so that I can resell it when the iPhone 5 comes out.

Up until now I’ve blown my way through many, many cases, from the extreme of the OtterBox to the more streamlined Apple Bumper and it’s the later that I’m currently using with a large degree of care to ensure that the front and back remain scratch free.

I’ve purchased screen protectors before but have never been entirely happy with them. This is mainly due to my application of the said protector which has often left my devices screen covered in small, and in some case large bubbles. Needless to say they haven’t stayed on for long.

However, there has always been one screen protector that has always called out to me and that is the invisibleSHEILD by Zagg, it dominate the Internet when searching for such things and in in-store displays are full of them too and not only for iDevices.

After witnessing first had a friends iPhone which was wearing an invisibleSHIELD applied wonderfully by a local store I decided to give it a try myself.

I got in touch with Zagg letting them know that I was planning to review the invisibleSHIELD for my devices and they kindly sent me a couple to review. One for my iPhone and another for my iPad 2.

The plastic screen protectors come with 3 additional items, an instruction pamphlet, a squeegee and a tube of application solution to be sprayed onto the invisibleSHEILD, (note, not the iPhone), to help provide excellent adhesion, placement and minimize those pesky bubbles.

The document provides both instructions for applying the screen protector and installation tips as well so I went about preparing my environment so that I would be ready to apply the invisibleSHIELD.

With a clear table, clean hands, and a clean and switched off iPhone 4S I set about applying my invisibleSHIELD. In addition to washing your hands it is recommended that you spray some of the application solution onto your hands so that fingerprints are minimized. I did that and then removed the protection piece for the back of my phone and dampened it with the solution.

I wasn’t sure how much of a spray was required to meet the guidelines of ‘slightly moisten’ but I covered the protector with enough that it was completely covered but not enough that would cause the liquid to run down or collect in pools.

With the invisibleSHIELD ‘slightly moistened’ I placed it lightly against the back of my device. Luckily for me I got it pretty accurately positioned on my first attempt and then went about using the squeegee to remove any excess water and bubbles. This worked very well although I was careful to ensure that I soaked up any of the liquid that came out from underneath the protector before it got close to any of the buttons and ports.

The pamphlet states that micro-bubbles and imperfections will work themselves out over two to three days but straight away I was pretty happy with the results and so after giving the back piece 5 minutes to set I started to repeat the process with the front piece.

Unfortunately things didn’t go quite so smoothly this time and I found myself having to remove the invisibleSHIELD and re-align it multiple times. Even with this though after squeegeeing out the excess liquid and bubbles again I was pleasantly surprised with the results, especially considering that this was the front of the phone which I would be looking at most often, if not exclusively compared to the back of the phone!

With the phone given a few minutes to ‘set’ I turned the phone back on and with the screen turned on the minor imperfections that should disappear after a few days were already not showing up and the texture of the invisibleSHIELD inself makes the phone feel more secure in my hands that without.

Next it’s on to covering the much larger screen space of my iPad 2, a much bigger task and one which I will return to along with my thoughts after using my invisibleSHIELD iPhone of a few days.

The buying process was easy and seamless via www.gelaskins.com, you can either browse through the 100’s of designs or design you own. While I messed around with the design tools I ended up choosing a couple of pre-designed covers and quickly went through the check-out process.

As I’m pretty impatient I paid a little extra for for fast delivery and a few days later the package was delivered in a flat cardboard envelope with my Gelaskins safe and undamaged inside. Needless to say I didn’t wait too long to get them adhered to the two devices.

The brief documentation that comes in the package recommends that you watch a video showing how to apply the skin and so that’s what I did. I watched the video on my iPhone 4S and 3 mins later I was ready to go. The video confirms most things that you probably already know, especially if you have applied something like this before but the 3 minutes is not wasted.

As recommended I gave my iPhone 4S a thorough cleaning before I started to ensure a strong fix to my device and then went about peeling the back piece from it’s backing paper. The skin has raised ridges across its sticky side to allow any trapped air to escape and to allow for repositioning. Only limited repositioning was needed on both the back and side pieces and I was able to firmly push them down and lock them in place pretty quickly. There are cut outs for the camera and side buttons and the all matched up perfectly.

Moving to the front of the iPhone 4S I was a little surprised, and dissapointed, to find that there were just pieces for the top and bottom of the screen instead of one whole piece including pieces down each side of the screen as I don’t feel this gives 100% protection and depending on the design leaves two blank areas.

The two pieces provide cut outs for the Home Button, Camera, Light Sensor and Speaker and while some of the pieces can seem tricky to pull out a trick that is shown on the video is to push down onto the iPhone the piece that you are try to remove and let it stick to the phone and then pick it off afterwards.

Getting the front pieces lined up was a little trickier but it wasn’t difficult and the whole process from beginning to end took no longer that 5 minutes and I was really happy with the results. The final piece of the process was to download the Gelaskins iPhone App from the App Store and get the wallpaper to accompany the given skin. This was easily done and also enabled you to customize the brightness of the wallpaper so that you could have different wallpapers for both your Home and Lock Screens.

The overall appearance is very nice especially with the matching wallpaper and with a few days of heavy use already there is no noticeable wear or tear on the skin. The skin provides a little more grip than the iPhone without a case but not as much as some cases can provide and doesn’t include a screen protector either.

At around just $15 per skin Gelaskins provide a great way to spice up you iPhone and any electronic device that you may have.

The protective skins in the image above have the same rounded corners which we have earlier seen in the leaked images of iPhone 4G by Gizmodo and Vietnamese website Tinhte.
