Google is gearing up to launch its next folding smartphone, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold, but initial benchmarks are not very promising. The new Tensor G5 processor exhibits only average performance, surprising for a device expected to compete with the top of the market.
In recent years, Google has been developing its own chips for its Pixel smartphones. This approach is meant to enhance control over both performance and software optimization. However, with competitors like Qualcomm and MediaTek, the battle for more power is intense. Every new model is highly anticipated, especially for its performance benchmarks, which provide a glimpse into a smartphone’s potential capabilities before it hits the market.
The upcoming Pixel 10 Pro Fold was recently tested on Geekbench, where it was equipped with the Tensor G5 chip. This processor scored 2,276 in single-core and 6,173 in multi-core tests. These figures are below those of current leaders such as the Snapdragon 8 Elite, which scores over 9,000 in multi-core tests. The chip configuration includes a Cortex-X4 core at 3.78 GHz, five Cortex-A725 cores at 3.05 GHz, and two Cortex-A520 cores at 2.25 GHz. The tested smartphone had 16 GB of RAM and was running on Android 16.

Tensor G5 Delivers Modest Performance with New Architecture in the Pixel 10 Pro Fold
Google has implemented a new graphics chip, the PowerVR DXT-48-1536, developed by Imagination Technologies. This setup was supposed to enhance the graphical power and smooth application management of the Tensor G5. However, the move to a 3 nm (or possibly 5 nm according to some sources) fabrication process has not bridged the gap with competing processors. Even though there is an improvement over the first version tested, the performance levels are still similar to older models like the Dimensity 9300.
These outcomes might be due to the use of older Arm cores and an Exynos modem that could be limiting overall performance. Google appears to focus more on software optimization rather than sheer power. While the chip promises better energy efficiency, it may fall short of expectations for those seeking high-end performance. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold relies heavily on its foldable design and advanced software features. However, with its release only a few months away, these benchmark scores raise concerns about its ability to compete with the latest models, such as the newly released Galaxy Z Fold 7.
