New CEOs Revealed: What Are John Ternus and Tim Cook Earning?

John Ternus Takes Over as CEO of Apple

John Ternus has officially taken the helm as the CEO of Apple, while Tim Cook has moved into the role of Chairman of the Board. As Apple is a publicly traded company, it has filed a legal declaration with the SEC revealing the compensation details of both executives. It should be noted that these figures do not include any potential bonuses.

For the fiscal year 2027, John Ternus will receive a base salary of 3 million dollars. Most notably, the new CEO will also be awarded target shares worth 55 million dollars. A quarter of this equity grant is dependent on tenure and will vest over a four-year period in six-month increments. The remaining three-quarters are tied to the company’s performance in comparison to other firms in the S&P 500 index. Additionally, Ternus is set to receive target shares valued at 2.5 million dollars by the end of 2026.

Compensation Details for Tim Cook

Tim Cook will earn a yearly salary of 2 million dollars. The former CEO will also receive equity worth 45 million dollars for 2027, which is allocated differently: half over four years, and the other half based on the company’s performance. Should Tim Cook retire after the first anniversary of the award, the granted shares will vest (subject to performance conditions) but will continue to be paid out on the originally scheduled vesting dates.

As CEO, Tim Cook’s compensation reached 74.3 million dollars in 2025. While John Ternus’ earnings as Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering are not publicly disclosed, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman suggests that executives at this level typically receive around 25 million dollars annually, including shares, salary, and bonuses.

Gurman also notes that Tim Cook’s new compensation as a non-executive Chairman is exceptionally high. He comments, “From a quick research, the 47 million dollars Cook earns as Chairman of the Board is virtually unprecedented and is double the amount received by the highest-paid chairpersons of listed companies. This might reflect Cook’s actual level of involvement, as I mentioned the other day. It is a compensation worthy of a leading CEO.”
