MacBook Neo Release Shakes Up the Industry
The introduction of the MacBook Neo has undoubtedly sent ripples through the technology sector, according to Nick Wu, CFO of Asus, during the announcement of his company’s quarterly earnings yesterday. Reported by Seeking Alpha, Wu commented, “considering Apple’s history of high pricing, the launch of such an affordable product is definitely a shock to the entire market.”
The CFO of Asus went on to explain how “all PC manufacturers, including upstream suppliers like Microsoft, Intel, and AMD, are taking this very seriously and are actively discussing how to compete with this new entrant in the PC ecosystem. Ongoing discussions are focused on how we can – or rather, how they can – compete with the Neo. Whether the pricing of this product, once it hits the mainstream market, will be attractive enough remains to be seen. Honestly, I cannot say for certain at this moment. But certainly, the entire PC sector will be launching competitive products to rival Apple.”
Wu also highlighted the impact of rumors and leaks on competition: “We became aware of the MacBook Neo shipments starting from the second half of last year, prompting us to make internal arrangements.” At the moment, Asus appears to be in a state of denial: “The focus has likely been more on content consumption. This somewhat differs from traditional laptop uses, as in this case, the Neo seems more akin to a tablet, which are primarily designed for content consumption. Of course, it is fully capable of performing all functions, but given the user experience and hardware limitations, the experience, in my opinion, significantly differs from that of mainstream products.”
Today marks the official availability of the MacBook Neo, starting at 699 euros for the general public and 599 euros for students. The initial reviews released yesterday were unanimous: it is an excellent entry-level device offering one of the best value for money in the industry.
