Google continuously updates its AI assistant, Gemini, shifting what’s available for free versus what’s locked behind a paywall. Some premium features have been made free, while others continue to require a subscription. Understanding the distinctions between these offerings can be complex, so here’s a detailed breakdown.

Artificial intelligence is increasingly becoming a staple in everyday life. Major tech companies are continuously expanding their portfolios to attract users with increasingly sophisticated AI assistants. Google’s Gemini app is no exception. It has historically reserved some of its capabilities for the paid version. However, over time, many of these exclusive features have become available for free, blurring the lines between the service tiers.

The app now offers three levels of service. The free version provides basic functionality, while Gemini Advanced costs about 20 euros per month, and Gemini Ultra goes up to 250 euros a month. Each tier unlocks additional features, from the power of the models and the size of the files analyzed to the ability to create videos.

The Free Version of Gemini Already Includes File Analysis and Image Generation

The free version grants access to the Gemini 2.5 Flash model for everyday use. Users can also experiment, albeit with limitations, with the 2.5 Pro model, which is suited for complex calculations, logic, or coding. The maximum context is set to 32,000 tokens, or about 50 pages of text. Supported file types include office documents, PDFs, images, and presentations. Up to ten files of 100 MB each can be added per request. Video analysis is also available, but only for videos under five minutes.

With Gemini Advanced, capabilities significantly increase. The context expands to one million tokens, equivalent to 1,500 pages, and daily requests to the 2.5 Pro model increase to one hundred. Subscribers can analyze spreadsheets, process tabular data, and even generate three 720p videos per day using the Veo 3 tool. Features such as Deep Research, scheduled actions, and advanced personalization also become much more extensive. Finally, Gemini Ultra represents the most comprehensive level, incorporating the Deep Think mode, sound-enriched videos, and unlimited access to the most advanced models.
