While Waze utilizes user-shared data to indicate speed cameras on roads, Google Maps does not provide this feature. However, there is a simple workaround that can be implemented in just a few minutes. Here’s how to do it.

As you might be aware, French road laws prohibit the use of devices designed to detect speed cameras. To be specific, “possession or transportation of a device, apparatus or product designed or advertised as being capable of detecting or interfering with systems used for recording traffic violations […] is punishable by a fine corresponding to fifth class misdemeanors.” This is outlined in article R413-15 of the road code.

However, some mapping applications cleverly navigate around these legal restrictions. Waze, for instance, relies on user reports of hazardous zones to potentially indicate the locations of speed cameras. TomTom AmiGo operates similarly. On the other hand, such information is still awaited on Google Maps, especially on mobile devices. Interestingly, since December 2024, the Android Auto version has begun displaying police checks through a partnership with Waze. It’s important to note that Google owns the mapping service.

Yet, there is a straightforward trick that allows the detection of both fixed and mobile speed cameras on this American company’s GPS service. We’ll explain how.

How to Detect Speed Cameras on Google Maps?

Firstly, to view speed cameras on Google Maps, one must use the Android mobile version of the app. Then, you need to download the TomTom AmiGo app from the Play Store on your device.

With the help of speech synthesis and the magic of the Overlay mode, you will be able to access TomTom AmiGo’s hazard alerts. Indeed, the app will appear as a floating widget, which you can then overlay on your route on Maps.

The issue arises, unfortunately, this method is not available on the iPhone. Apple’s iOS does not allow one app to display a widget over another app. Unless there is a change in policy by Apple, iPhone users will have to do without this feature… or use an Android smartphone if they have one.

Setting Up TomTom AmiGo to Detect Cameras on Maps

Of course, you need to make a few adjustments on TomTom AmiGo to “detect” cameras while using Maps. Here’s what you should do:

  • After downloading the app from the Play Store, launch it and enable location services.
  • Accept the various pop-ups and especially allow TomTom AmiGo to send notifications.
  • Then, select the voice of your choice to proceed to the home screen.
  • Once done, tap on the three small dots at the bottom right and make sure to activate the sound by pressing the speaker icon to the right.

  • Now press Menu, then Overlay Mode at the bottom.

  • To use this mode, you must allow continuous data collection by selecting “Allow all the time”.
  • You will then be redirected directly to the Overlay on other apps tab in your smartphone’s settings.

  • Find TomTom AmiGo in the list and activate the “Allow overlay on other apps” button.

And there you have it, if you follow these steps correctly, TomTom AmiGo should now appear as a small widget on your screen. Just start your route on Maps, and place the widget wherever you prefer to benefit from TomTom AmiGo’s alerts.

In this way, you get the best of both worlds: on one side, the reliable routing of Maps and on the other, all the user-shared information from TomTom Ami Go (construction zones, accidents, radar control zones, etc.).
