Dark Mode Reduces Eye Strain
Dark mode, a feature that has gradually become a staple on everything from smartphone interfaces to professional software, primarily aims to reduce eye strain, particularly in low-light conditions. This benefit, long suggested by users, is now gaining some recognition in scientific literature.
Experimental studies have indicated that using negative polarity (light text on a dark background) can lessen eye strain, especially in dim environments. A 2019 study conducted by researchers at the University of Central Florida particularly noted that dark mode decreases visual fatigue and enhances visual acuity when using augmented reality screens in low-light situations. Moreover, a study published in April 2025 in The International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health also found that dark mode could slightly reduce eye dryness during prolonged tablet use compared to light mode. Dark mode furthermore reduces the emission of blue light, which is well known for its impact on sleep and eye strain. Less light emission also means reduced glare, which can enhance comfort during nighttime use.
However, the advantages of dark mode can vary significantly depending on the context. In well-lit environments, several studies (including one by Piepenbrock et al., 2014) have found that reading is faster and more accurate on a light background. Thus, positive polarity (dark text on a light background) is often better for demanding cognitive tasks such as extensive reading or note-taking.
