Recording Mode on ChatGPT: A Feature (Currently) for Paying Users
First announced in June alongside other updates, the Recording Mode of ChatGPT has been rolled out somewhat cautiously by OpenAI: it is currently only available on the macOS version, which can be downloaded from the OpenAI website or via the App Store. More importantly, it is exclusive to subscribers of ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Enterprise, and Edu. There is no information yet on a broader rollout or availability on other platforms like web, Windows, iOS, or Android, or for the free version.
It’s not unreasonable to assume that the feature, which could work alongside transcription software, will eventually be expanded to other platforms, maintaining the same functionality. OpenAI has previously chosen a phased rollout approach: in 2024, the advanced voice mode was initially launched on iOS and Android before being made available across all platforms.
How to Record and Summarize a Meeting with ChatGPT
The Recording Mode, which can be used to “record, transcribe, and summarize meetings, brainstorming sessions, and idea exchanges,” according to OpenAI, is quite user-friendly. To record an exchange and obtain a summary, follow these steps:
- Open the macOS version of ChatGPT,
- Click on the recording button, located to the right in the input bar,
- Allow access to your device’s microphone,
- A recording window will then appear on the right,
- Once the meeting is over, press Stop,
- To get the summary of key points, click on Send. OpenAI notes that this operation may take a few minutes.
As shown in the image below, after processing the recording, ChatGPT produces a document. This document can be edited and downloaded, detailing the time, date, topic of the meeting, and the main points discussed. However, the tool has some shortcomings: it occasionally mixes up names and defaults to an English transcription.
