You can now generate promo codes for your Mac apps in iTunes Connect. These promo codes can be redeemed in any Mac App Store worldwide. For each version of your app, you can request up to 50 promo codes.

This is a bit of a turnaround for Apple after initially saying promo codes wouldn’t be available to developers wanting to offer free apps to reviewers and the like. Presumably this also means iTunes gift cards can now be redeemed via the Mac App Store too, whereas before users had to use iTunes to add credit to their account.

The change brings the Mac App Store in line with it’s iOS counterpart. Make sure you follow us on Twitter and become a fan on facebook to enter promo code giveaways for the hottest apps and games.

On November 4, 2009 Apple announced that developers have created over 100,000 apps for the App Store, making it the largest applications store in the world.

With more than 20 categories to choose from and new apps being launched everyday, sometimes it’s difficult to discover new apps of your interest. iPhone OS 3.0 introduced new genius feature for the App Store which enables you to discover apps on the basis of installed apps on your device.

Genius for App Store is certainly a great way to explore apps which you would probably be interested in, however it is limited to the number of apps you install or buy for your device.

Apptizr is a new iPhone app recommendation service (still in beta) which uses proprietary algorithm to suggest app recommendations on the basis of your tastes. After the initial sign up for the service (available by invitation only) you are presented with a series of questions which help the service identify your interest and start recommending quality apps.

We have been testing the service for a few days and the results are positive. Although, almost all recommendations were already owned by us.

David Li, CEO and Co-Founder of Apptizr describes the service as follows:

With over 100K apps approved by the Apple App Store, finding high quality apps that match your interests is like finding a needle in the haystack. Apptizr does the heavy lifting through our proprietary algorithm that matches the users’ interest with the right apps. The engine is smart enough to learn more about our users’ preferences over time as they tell us whether they liked the recommendations we made. We also evaluate the applications for quality and only recommend the best apps in each category to our users.

The service allows you to either like or dislike a recommendation which enables the service to become smarter.

If you love to discover new apps which match your interest level then you should definitely try Apptizr!

With the new iPhone 3GS and it’s upgraded 3 mega-pixel camera, not to mention the auto focus feature it’s little surprise that more and more people will be using their iPhone as their main camera and with more pictures you are going to want to do more things with them and this is where Photo Philter Phun aims to help out.

PPP (Photo Philter Phun) lets you apply 20 different filters to any photo you’ve taken on your phone or for that matter transferred to your phone from your PC, downloaded from Facebook, Twitter, Safari or any other place you can imagine, if it’s on your iPhone you can apply the filter. The fact that you can apply the filters using any picture means that PPP can also be used with the iPod touch.

Applying a filter is easy, select a picture, choose the filter and preview. Applying the filter can take anything from a second to 5 seconds and the more filters your apply the longer it will take. As easy as it is to apply the filters you can also easily undo the changes using the Revert button so playing around and testing is pretty easy. You can only apply a filter to the whole picture rather than specific areas but as simple as it is that doesn’t really matter.

Depending on the picture the filters that you apply can range from the sublime to the ridiculous and some are definitely better than others with my favorites including the Oil Painting Effect, Negative Image and Sharpen Image, the last of which doesn’t add any fancy effect but can certainly right many wrongs on photo’s that are a little too fuzzy for their own good.

Once you are happy with your creativity you have a few options of what you can do, save the updated image to your camera roll, upload to Twitter or publish to Facebook all of which can be done at the click of a button.

official-app-store-badge_touch_4At 99c you can’t really go wrong with this app and while there are other apps that will allow detailed editing of your pictures this is a quick and easy way apply a range of cool effects.

iPhone Redeem Promo CodesPolyhedra [rating: 3.5/5]

“Another puzzle game” I hear you cry, “my iPhone is already full of puzzle games, why should I get another one?”, well I’ll tell you, if you have an iPhone/iPod touch full of puzzle games you must obviously like them, and secondly it’s only 2 bucks so what have you got to lose? If that hasn’t got you interested already, read on, if you are interested also read on!

The aim of Polyhedra is to fill a given percentage of the screen with geometric shapes, sounds simple enough right? Well obviously it’s not that easy. Firstly you only have a certain number of shapes to use, secondly, there are a multitude of enemies hell bent on stopping you from building your shapes. The whole game can be played with a single finger so that makes controls pretty simple. Touching the screen creates your shape and the longer you hold your finger down the larger it grows, don’t let one of the enemies that are bouncing around the screen touch the shape that you are creating though as it will kill it and reduce the number of shapes that you have at your disposal by one.

You start with circles and as you complete enough levels you get to unlock squares, pentagons, hexagons and more with your high scores all being uploaded to the Agon leaderboards which is a portal for Polyhedra and other games too. The psychedelic backgrounds create quite a colorful experience and with the simplicity of the game play the balance works well.

A ‘Toy Box’ has been added where you can play with all the geometric shapes just for fun to create you own pictures, but it doesn’t really add anything to the game and most of my time was spent playing the game rather than playing in the Toy Box.

Polyhedra is a relatively short game but what it lacks in quantity it makes up for in simplicity and fun.

Block Drop iPhone

Block Drop [rating: 4/5]

With endless levels and challenging game play, Block Drop with be a hit amongst puzzle game enthusiasts. This game has a simple foundation; remove all of the blocks on each level until only the block with the checkered flag remains. Although a simple foundation, the game will keep you going and going and going…..

Using intense strategies, the player must shift a sparkling gem across blocks on a tranquil body of water. Blocks rise up out of the water and blocks rise down. But only one block holds a checkerboard flag. Utilizing whatever tactic it takes, the player must get the gem on the block with the checkerboard flag. Sound easy? Wrong. Every time you leap off a heap of blocks, the bottom block disappears lowering the tower. The player is left with the obstacle of lowering and rising towers until he/she discovers the pattern that will destroy all of the blocks leaving only one, the checkerboard.

Levels are randomly generated providing a multitude of options. This prevents the player from memorizing patterns and actually having to use the brain. I played without background music because the new age tunes became maddening. The controls are simple, a virtual pad is displayed which controls the direction in which you move. With 999 levels I don’t see anyone getting bored. Feeling puzzled? You’re in luck; a level solution waits in the options menu. I found this to be extremely helpful.

With replay value at its’ highest, this is a bargain.

Keep an electronic eye on your bills with this handy app

Picking up on this application up again from my review in March, it’s great to see plenty of improvement, particularly the interface which as a whole looks far more sophisticated, complete with 6 different colour variations to help add a touch of personalization although I find gray most fitting to my iPhone.

The most apparent change over the previous version is a month to view option which lets you quickly add bills with the due date that you have tapped, it also lets you see how heavy your month has been on your finances with green squares showing paid and red unpaid bills. The ever present All/Paid/Unpaid filters helping with this letting you flick between these states and changing the also ever present month. This has also seen improvement as you can now tap this to bring up a list of Accounts handled by the app (previously known as collectors, a very sensible name change I must say) so you can easily filter down from all bills down to individual accounts.

The accounts tab has been improved with additional categories that cascade on a tap to reveal accounts inside them letting you handle larger amounts of accounts without feeling bogged down in information overload.

New in settings is push notification, which requires a small annual fee and option of what time to receive that notification although I would like to think this time is relative to your device rather than the push server where ever it may be. Also new here is on tap to pay which lets you mark a bill as paid by tapping the most left icon in the list view changing it from a simplified calendar icon into a green tick mark and an option to turn on PocketMoney Integration. Sadly I can’t comment on how this works as I don’t own the other application but will update if it ever comes up for review in the future.

Perhaps the biggest improvement to this application is getting data in and out of the application, with two new tabs, one for backup/restore and the other for exporting. Backing up your database now couldn’t be simpler with a simple flick of a switch enables a mini webserver in the app, which lets you use your computer and web browser to back up or restore your database as long as it’s on the same wireless network as your iPod Touch. You could also email the backup directly from the app to an email address of your choosing should you get caught away from your computer. The export function lets you specify a start and end month then lets you email it as a .csv file however there’s no option for to specify which account you want it to export from, dashing your idea of sending your business expenses directly to your boss for example.

Who hasn’t lent someone something? Who hasn’t borrowed something from someone? I think that covers everyone doesn’t it? Well if it does, and if you do either a lot, then Mooch!, not to be confused with Mooch, could be just the app for you as it allows you to simply keep track of what you’ve borrowed and what you’ve lent and to whom. Helping you keep track of everything and making sure that you don’t become know as a mooch!

Getting started is as easy as clicking on either the ‘I Borrowed’ or ‘I Lent’ button. From there your options are the same. If it’s cash then you can simply enter in the amount add the contact from your iPhone/iPod touch Contacts to whom you lent to or borrowed from and click save. With the lending and borrowing of money Mooch! will also give you an overall balance meaning that if you lend someone $20 and then borrow $25 it will give you a balance showing that you owe them $5.

If it’s an actual item that’s being traded you can even add a photo of the said item and categorize it into one of six groups. The groups do cover most items that you’d want to trade but it would be nice to have the ability to set your own categories too. Notes can be added to any item too.

All your traded items get listed on the home page by contact so you can easily see at a glance who owes you what and what you owe other people. It’s also easy to edit and ultimately delete any item once it’s be returned to you or you return what ever item it is you’ve borrowed, so keeping your items up to date and is easy.

Once an item has been returned you can mark it as returned and if you haven’t received back something that you sent out some time ago then you can use the inbuilt reminder option that will send the person an email with a friendly reminder.

If you do a lot of borrowing/lending that you could do a lot worse than purchasing this simple yet effective application especially as it’s on sale for just 99c at the moment.

Pogg [rating: 4/5]

As a teacher I am always looking for the latest technology to integrate into my classroom. I took a risk this year and decided to fill an iPhone/iPod touch with educational games for the students to use independently while practicing important skills and strategies. Thus far it has been a complete success. So successful that I plan on adding more devices to the classroom full of the most engaging and thought provoking apps available. While in the process I thought it would be helpful to other educators and parents to read reviews of educational apps.

The first educational app on my list to review is Pogg. Pogg, a cute green alien is the star of the show. He hops, reads, draws, hides, claps, eats and anything else you tell him to do. There are two modes in this game, Spelling and Picture Mode.

Spelling mode starts by asking “What should Pogg do now?”. Using the virtual keypad, the player types in a basic word and watches Pogg complete the task. For example, if I type “jump”, a short movie clip would display Pogg jump. Kids can experiment and practice spelling all sorts of words while watching their new green friend show off his talent by demonstrating the action or flaunting the item. This is an exciting way for kids (2-8) to work on their phonemic awareness independently while having fun.

Picture Mode displays all of the Pogg animations available on icons. The player touches an icon and watches while Pogg demonstrates. For example, if the icon says “bell” a clip of Pogg ringing a bell will appear. This mode is perfect for those emerging spellers or young kids to little to spell. Currently there are 30 different clips of Pogg with a spelling dictionary of approximately 300 word/phrase combinations. The developer plans to release many more as free upgrades.

This game has inconceivable graphics that appeal to kids of all ages. This is a wonderful addition to the currently available educational apps. In the future it would be nice if different sections were added. For example, word families, basic sight words, Dolce word list according to age, more advanced words etc. Pogg is sure to amuse while educate the young ones for hours at a time. Two thumbs up for this champion.

Give yourself a handy launch pad with SyPhone!

My initial reaction to this application was “omg someone’s tried to clone Windows Mobile home screen for iPhone” but thankfully syPhone feels a lot better to use despite crashing out a few times. At the top of the screen you have 4 tabs, Email which lets you write a quick email within the application and ToDo which is a simple to do list, both support landscape keyboard however the latter not so well with the text entry box not filling the available screen space.

The next tab is RSS which is a simple RSS reader however it only lets you read what is in the feed itself, there is no pass through to Safari for reading the whole article if the publisher only decides to put a snippet in the RSS feed. The last tab is Find which brings up a list of all the names and phone numbers in your address book and lets you filter it down by name or number by simply using the keyboard or switching to the keypad towards the bottom of the screen are a series of quick call buttons which you can assign to individual numbers from your address book, the button is then replaced by the picture in the contact page, there are 12 of these available with 4 being visible at any one time and you drag left to right to scroll through them.

syPhone iPhone Home Screen Windows Mobile

Other functions include, the current date, current time (mine for some reason is stuck at midday) with location and the current weather conditions with temperature. Tapping these items brings up further functionality, so tapping the date will bring up a month to view calendar and tapping either the time or weather will bring up 4 configurable locations thankfully the background pattern and colour is customisable by turning the device into landscape mode and tapping the a colour and then the pattern of your choice out of a selection of 10 colours and 4 patterns easily matching any iPhone case you care to adorn it with however accessing this function does clash a bit after say writing emails or notes in landscape mode.

As this application launches pretty fast it could be used quite a bit despite not being able to integrate fully into the iPhone software, as you could simply sleep the device while in the app and return to it quickly when going into your phone again.

My gripes with this application is that it feels cramped, partly due to the fact that most of the interactive elements are crammed into the top half of the screen with the static bottom half rarely leaving the screen. I also find this application a good bit unstable having it crashed on me at least 3 times during testing, and for some reason the clock in the middle reports my location but time stuck at midday. Initially I was at a loss as how you remove or edit items like quick call icons, weather and world clock entries all appeared permanent with no obvious way of removing them but actually if you swipe upwards over an item it will come up with a question “are you sure you want to remove this?”

syPhone 09 for iPhone is definitely worth checking out!

More and more companies are sending out documents in PDF format these days and with the iPhone also being used as a professional device having a good PDF document reader for it makes complete sense.

When you initially launch PDF Expert you are presented with a User Guide for the app in PDF format, (what else!) and to get an idea of what this app will do for you not only can you read this guide but just opening it starts you off being able to use some of it’s functions.

The documents will display in both landscape and portrait mode. Landscape will allow you to read the document easier while in portrait mode you can view full pages, in full color, and access the menu items. And it’s these menu’s options that really bring this app to life.

PDF Expert iPhone

First up is the search option which works excellently, simply enter the word you wish to find in the search box at the top of the page and after it has finished searching, which took only a matter of seconds for a 100 page document, you can the move though each of the found words using the arrow keys.

Copying the text of any document is easy too. After selecting the copy option a block is highlighted on the page which you can resize and move by simply touching the screen. Once you’ve highlighted the text you want you simply tap the Copy button and that text will be available for you to copy into any other application. Other options include Bookmarking, very important especially while ready large documents, Go to page which does just what it say’s and an email option that allows you to forward your PDF doc to someone via email.

The display of the documents is clear and easy to read and zooming utilizes the standard touch screen controls making it very intuitive to navigate around. If you receive password protected documents then PDF Expert can handle those too. It’s not limited to PDF documents either as it can also view MS Offics, HTML and txt files too.

The best feature of this PDF application for me though was the ability to drag and drop files to my iPhone and have them directly appear within the PDF Expert document. This means all the files I download to my PC can easily be transfered to my iPhone quickly and easily over the wifi network by simply entering setting up the iPhone in your Network Places. And don’t worry if you’ve not done that before because the applications steps you though it and you will be up and away within a matter of seconds.

PDF Expert is a one stop shop for all your PDF needs so if you use your iPhone/iPod Touch for work and/or handle a lot of PDF documents this app is a must for you. If you’re quick you can get hold of it for just $3.99.

Fasten your seat belt. Leading German mobile games publisher HandyGames (developer of top hit BeerShooter and Tattoo Mania) and Swedish game developer Pieces Interactive present the much anticipated iPhone version of the puzzle action hit Puzzlegeddon. Having sharpened their take on the game with PC and mobile versions, they have now unleashed this challenging mix of puzzle, action and strategy to the iTunes Store.

Imagine using the character of your choice along with your strategic puzzle skills to conquer planets. Defend and defeat through the manifold galaxies, game modes and challenges. Presented with a square puzzle board made up of blocks in four colors, the player shuffles blocks around by moving rows and columns. As a block is moved out of one edge it wraps around the board and appears on the other side, similar to a “flattened version of a Rubik’s Cube”. The objective, similar to other match 4 games, is to match blocks of similar color ultimately defeating countless obstacles that patiently await your arrival.

Featuring 12 attacks and power ups, eight different characters with their own special skills, you must make your way through themed planets by sliding rows and columns of similar color. Make sure to make large combos which will reward you access to the various power-ups necessary to boost your score.

Due to the massive amount of puzzle games available at the App Store, these developers have worked hard to stand out from the competition. Some of the exceptional features include:

I have only a few gripes about this application. The background music is irritating and repetitive. Turning off the volume fixes this problem however it would be nice if it supported iPod music. As for the graphics, they are “good”. The animations are simple but smooth. In order for this game to make it to the top of their competition, multifaceted and complex animations must be added to enhance the overall look.

“PUZZLEGEDDON is a game for every taste and play style – it makes you think hard, play smart and act fast!” Use your skills wisely and your strategies wiser. Try the free version to see if you are up for the challenge. You can’t go wrong with “Geddon” this game!

T-Kara [rating: 3.5/5]

As more and more puzzle games flood into the App Store a game needs to have something different if it’s going to stand out and that is what T-Kara developed by Mexond is offering, and not only that it’s offering two for the price of one.

The game is played on a 8 x 9 grid and in both modes the movement of the pieces is done by sliding entire rows or columns back and fourth either vertically or horizontally and while this premise is easy the puzzles are not.

The first mode is Time Attack, a Bejeweled style game where aligning four or more matching shapes will make them disappear. You’re up against the clock though and you need to reach a certain score to open up the next level and new pieces. Each level also brings new challenges where certain new pieces can only be cleared in certain ways. These lock patterns certainly raise the difficulty level but certainly make it more of an enjoyable challenge too.

Puzzle mode takes away the timer and makes for a more relaxing game. While the controls and movement of the pieces remain the same the task now is to move the pieces so that they match a predefined pattern. The difficulty level racks up pretty quickly here but thanks to the the lack of a timer your able to take your time to complete the 12 puzzles.

The game graphics and menus look sleek and navigation is via unique system of side panels around the edges of the screen, this can be a little confusing to begin with but after a few minutes you’ll be navigating around the app with no troubles at all. While the music is your standard puzzle style background music it certainly doesn’t irritate and the sound effects fit in well.

App Store Badge

If you are quick you can pick up this new style puzzler for a bargain 99 cents and while this puzzler could be completed quickly by puzzle addicts this should provide enough of a challenge for most puzzle fans. Hopefully future updates will include more pictures for the puzzle mode too.
