Rhymes for Tots

With more and more children getting there hands on technology more and more apps are coming out to meet that market. I know this from first hand experience because if I can’t find my iPad I know I’ll probably find it with my six year old daughter.

A new game that will be hitting the App Store soon the simply titled Rhymes for Tots which as the name suggest introduces young children to some of the most popular nursery rhymes.

Jack and Jill, Humpty Dumpty and Hickory Dickory Dock are all presented in animated form along with subtitles for your child to sing along with. While these nursery rhymes are well presented it’s only the beginning of what this app has to offer.

Each nursery rhyme also includes up to 5 mini games themed on the rhyme in question. The games include match games, join the dots, find the shape, rhymes and my favorite, a great coloring game where you get to color pictures from the nursery rhyme in question.

There is a lot packed into this single application and if appropriately priced, at the time of writing the price was not known, it could be a great addition to the iPad of any parent that has young children.

So the launch of the sequel brings high expectations.

This preview build enabled me to preview the first 7 levels of the 19 that are include in Episode Two and if these initial seven are anything to go buy we’re in for a real treat when the full game is released later this year.

The game launches with a movie link that reminded me of the claustrophobic and dark atmosphere of the Alien movies. When the game launches there I was surprised to find that there is an earthly feel to the first level with a rain forest feel to it.

This doesn’t last long though and by the second level we are back inside with an industrial style. Both look even more polished than the original Dark Nebula and it’s not only the graphics that have been improved upon.

In addition to the same challenges from Episode One there are new features, puzzles and bosses and that’s after only seeing less than half the new game. The game has been expanded to included left and right scrolling to add additional real estate to the levels and features obstacles to avoid. You also get armed with weapons at times that enable you to smash your way past some of the new enemies that are now included.

Online leader boards and Facebook integration are still included so that you can compare and boast you achievements. Overall Dark Nebula Episode Two had a lot to live up too and so far it has set my mouth watering with anticipation.

Fast Furious Adrenaline iPhone_4

Racing games on the iPhone/iPod Touch are big business, they are extremely popular and they demand the top prices too so they are obviously doing some right. The newest racing game to hit the streets around April 16th is Fast & Furious Adrenaline from the franchise of the same name, and it is to street racing what Real Racing is to track racing.

Something that comes across from the start is the high production values of the game. The graphics of the menus and cut-scenes are well produced and look good however that is not fully translated to the in-game graphics as you race around the streets of Los Angeles.

The street race format see’s you joining one of four crews in an attempt to take over and own the city streets. This is mainly covered in the Story Mode where you will progress through five different race types as you attempt to beat your rivals. The five races types are road race, time trial, cop chase, drag race and boss battle which all offer different types of racing styles.

The path through the Story Mode certainly is pretty linear to begin with although as you progress you will get multiple race types to chose from although ultimately you will have to complete them all in some order to become king of the streets!

The 30+ cars handle well as you race around the city although some of the collisions are a little soft but nothing that you wouldn’t expect from an arcade racer rather than and sim and at times collisions with the track are either to harsh or have no impact at all. Also while using this preview build the game crashed pretty frequently, hopefully this is something that can be fixed before the final release.

It’s great that you are offered 3 steering options to choice from which offer different alternatives to steering your vehicle while the break and nitro’s are all controlled through virtual buttons. The accelerometer controls allow’s you to steer your car by tilting your device left and right and are very responsive. Then there is the steering wheel option which places a virtual steering wheel in the bottom left hand corner of the screen that you use your left thumb to control, and finally the touch controls that allow you to steer your car via touching the left and right hand side of your screen.

For me the best controls are the touch controls, they are sensitive and accurate and most importantly they produce the best results when it comes to accurate, long drifting which is something that is rare in any racing game on the iPhone/iPod Touch!

Multi-player is offered not only locally but also online. In it’s current pre-release version I was unable to download the ghosts and the only Facebook integration was the ability to post bragging rights when I won races and unlocked cars. I look forward to playing the game online and it will be interesting to see how the online aspect of the game via Facebook is integrated in the final release which also includes the ability to upload videos of your best races.

At present, and remember this is a pre-release version of the game so this may change, the in-game graphics feel a little stilted and the overall game currently feels cold and lacking atmosphere which in a street racing game more than any other is vitally important. That being said when you are travelling at high-speed what the city scape looks likes becomes less important.

While Fast & Furious Adrenaline beta build might have a few rough edges it still looks like it should be a great addition to the iPhone/iPod Touch list of racing games especially if those rough edges can be smoothed out. If you are looking for a fun and fast arcade racer then Adrenaline looks like it’s going to fit the bill for you when it’s finally released.

There are a number of iPhone games that use music as a backdrop for game play. Tapulous’ popular Tap Tap Revenge series immediately comes to mind. The thing about games like Tap Tap Revenge is that they require you to buy content to play with which, on an iPhone full of music, might seem like a needless expense. The upcoming game Tune Runner from Appy Entertainment takes a more revolutionary path, using your existing music library as the in-game content.

In Tune Runner, the player must make their way through various environments by drawing the shapes that move from right to left on the screen. Successfully draw the shape through touch on the screen and your robot Grov-ee continues on his journey, unsuccessfully draw the shape and your robot loses a little bit of his life. If you miss enough shapes your life meter drains and your mission is over. As I alluded to in the beginning though, Tune Runner’s revolutionary aspect is in the creation of the game environment. Tune Runner scans the music on your iPhone and for each level played you select a song. The game then generates the level dynamically based on that song. Every level is different, no two plays are ever the same. Even two plays on the same song are different.

Tune Runner for iPhone also implements some nice extras in addition to the solid game play. Tune Runner implements full OpenFeint support with global high scores and achievements. Additionally, after you complete a song, your score is submitted against all other scores for that song. This is an interesting twist on social gaming since usually overall global high score is usually king.

The other interesting extra is how game play and game price are connected. Instead of pasting banner ads to every empty space in the application or charging more for the game, Tune Runner takes another approach. Each new game is allotted a certain number of plays of the game. To earn more plays of the game the user can either purchase them or earn them the Recharge mini-game. Purchasing them is a straightforward proposition. The Recharge mini-game is a little bit more interesting. Play is the same as the main game but instead of Grov-ee, a battery is displayed. Each shape that is successfully drawn places a bit more energy in the battery. When the battery reaches full charge an additional play is earned. To subsidize this, banner ads are displayed during the Recharge mini-game which is a small price to pay for this fun little mini-game and additional plays of the game.

I look forward to playing the final version of Tune Runner. It looks to be an innovative game with a fun and interesting interface. I think Appy has a winner on its hands.

Mobile gaming is all about the ability to pick up and play a game and that’s not always possible with an in depth RPG, however, that may have just changed with Caligo Chaser from Com2uS.

You take the roll of a young knight who in order to repay a debt takes on the task of solving cases and builds his skills and abilities. While the story may not be the strongest aspect of the game it’s told with a degree of humor that keeps things moving along well enough. As with most games of this style the story is told via text but with the ability of being able to fast forward through the text it means that you won’t get bogged down.

A virtual d-pad and action button are all you need for the game itself and other than the d-pad being a little unforgiving at times the controls work well. The same can not be said for the navigation menu’s which in it’s current beta release are too small to navigate easily. The graphics are anime style and while they may not be ground breaking they also don’t detract from the game itself while the sound effects and music are your standard RPG variety.

Winning the battles can usually be achieved by your standard button bashing however that’s not going to make your progression through the game. Winning the battles using a variety of attacks, combo’s and speed will improve your ranking and earn you bigger points and rewards. Your rewards and points can be used to for items which in turn can be combined for even bigger, better and more powerful items which as you progress through the land will be more and more essential to your success.

If you’ve played similar games before you are going to be perfectly at home here and yet for a newcomers to the genre the difficulty level increases at a smooth pace which makes it feel the first few quests feel like a basic tutorial.

Caligo Chaser, even in the beta release, is a challenging and engaging RPG and it should ensure the Com2us’s success in the App Store continues where it left off.

Com2us have already produced some of the App Store’s big successes especially with Homerun Battle 3D (our review) and Sniper Vs Sniper Online which show how iPhone/iPod touch gaming should be done. So when they bring out a new game there is always going to be a buzz. Their latest title which is currently in closed beta testing is Heavy Gunner, a 3D inter-galactic shoot-em up.

As we’ve come to expect with Com2us games the graphics of the navigation menu’s and in game are gorgeous and navigating through the menu’s is a breeze with the slick military style screens.

The controls have been well implemented, controlling your movement and aim is done via the accelerometer which can be re-calibrated at anytime making it easy to play as you move around and change position without having to have the neck of a contortionist! During the game itself your two weapons are controlled via two large buttons in the bottom right and left hand corner of the screen. You’re aim can be controlled simply by using the accelerometer itself, however for increased accuracy you can also move your thumbs on the fire buttons to move your aim too.

The are two different game modes to choose from, the first is Campaign mode where your task is to make your way through 35 levels of intense action as you defend yourself and humanity against a seemingly never-ending supply of alien craft. Challenge mode meanwhile sets you different challenges where you can compare your best scores to other players via the online leader-boards.

As you complete each level you will be rewarded with points that you can use to not only upgrade your existing weapon which is a pretty affective gattling gun but also purchase new weapons including plasma guns, an EMP shockwave and a Avenger heavy machine gun. In total there are 8 guns to work you way through and upgrade while you can also upgrade your Integrated Combat Platform, which is your combat machine in which are are based.

As mentioned previously the game-play comes thick and fast, however while this is great it also leads to the games biggest problem, namely a slow-down in the frame rate when the action gets particularly fraught and unfortunately the action packed pace of the game is one of it’s selling points so for it to suffer slow-down is a major disappointment. However, with each beta release this has been greatly improved and if this continues before the full version is released the problem should be all but gone.

If you are a fan of shoot-em ups you are not going to be disappointed with Heavy Gunner, there is plenty of content, online leader boards, social networking integration and 3 levels of difficulty to keep you going for a longtime.

The game has already become very popular even before its release, it has entered the final stage of testing and will  be submitted to Apple later this week.

The most interesting twist about Guerrilla Bob is that John Gore, star of Minigore is joining Guerrilla Bob for some one on one shoot out action.

The developers have also made some changes to the background story of Guerrilla Bob (read the old story)

Guerrilla Bob Story

It all started with two best friends. Bob and John Gore have been friends since they were 10, and continued to be best buddies through high school, and then through college.

Eventually, Bob decided to enroll in the army, while John Gore chose a life of crime and money.

Bob got great achievements and got promotion after promotion, until he got to be a national hero.

Jealous of his success, John Gore set him up so that Bob would look like a corrupt soldier. So Bob was kicked out of the army.

With nothing left to do, Bob decided to get REVENGE, and became a rebel.
From then on, he would go by the name Guerrilla Bob. One day, Bob found that the army had a plan to nuke the place where his old friend John Gore had his troops. He sabotaged the plan, so he’d go in by himself and hunt them down one by one.

Fleeced! [rating: 5/5]

Update: Fleeced! has  just been Featured in What’s Hot on the App Store and will be 50% off for the time of the feature.
One of the great things about the Apple App Store is it’s ability to enable fresh new talent to engage in producing new and unique apps. Bight Games aren’t new to the App Store, they already have the well received Big Top 10 available for purchase but soon their latest and perhaps the most bizarre game to hit the App Store will be released in the form of Fleeced!

In it’s simplest form Fleeced! for iPhone is a Castle Defense style game where you need to defend your walls while attempting to break down your opponents. Nothing too unique in that but it’s the way that you do it and the reason why you are doing it that makes Fleeced! so unique.

You take the role of one of two Peruvian brothers who have taken sibling rivalry to a whole new level. Both brothers have a Llama and in order to defeat your brother you must attempt to shear his llama of all it’s valuable wool before he shears yours. Both brothers are helped on their mission by local llama rustlers who, while you destroy your brothers walls to the ground will run in and sheer the llama as quick as he can! Is there another game that comes close to this in the App Store? I think not.

OK, so the premise may sound confusing but the game is anything but. You start the game in a small pen made of hay walls with just you and your llama inside. You have 3 coins to your name and an angry brother on the other side of the field in a similar pen. The first thing you’ll need to do is get yourself a weapon, and in Fleeced! the weapon of choice are a variety of cannons. For 3 coins you are only able to purchase the smallest of the cannons. To do this you select the cannon option from the 4 action buttons in the bottom right hand corner of the screen. This will bring up the cannon options where you can drag and drop your cannon into your pen. Placement is key here on the later rounds esp. as cannons can take up quite a bit of space.

With a cannon built you can now start firing at your brother, or more specifically at his walls. The main action button in the shoot button and when the cannon is loaded and you are positioned behind it the fire button becomes enabled and you can launch your cannonball(s). From this point on until the cannonball(s) hit their target the playing perspective turns to 1st person mode and you can control the direction of them by moving the iPhone/iPod touch left/right and backwards/forwards. This takes some getting used to at the start but after a few games you’ll be breaking down your brothers walls with comparative ease.

The first cannon that you purchase will only smash a couple of layers of wall and so you’ll need at least a couple of accurate shots to break through his defenses to let the llama rustler through to shear your brothers llama. However, the rustler runs around the walls in a fixed direction so opening up a gap in the defenses while the rustler is at the other end of the pen will give your brother the opportunity to fix the wall.

While all this is going on of course your brother is attempting to break down your wall so that his llama rustler can get to your llama and shed him of his valuable fleece. As with most Castle Defense games you need to balance your defense and attack appropriately.

You control your character via a virtual dpad in the lower left corner of the screen. Run towards a destroyed or partially destroyed wall, which is highlighted by the icon at your characters feet, and click the re-build icon to repair it. A fully repaired hay wall can then be upgraded to a wooden wall for extra strength, at the cost of 1 coin, and while that will become more and more necessary as you progress through the levels you need to save some of those coins for upgrading to bigger and better cannons.

Coins are randomly dropped inside your pen and so as you run between wall and cannon, cannon and wall you can build up your coins for both upgrading your cannons and walls. Also randomly around you pen power-ups will be placed, from increasing the power of your cannons to automatically rebuilding all of your walls these power-ups can sometimes be the difference between success and failure and that’s even before you mention the Llama Swap power-up which can instantly turn an imminent win to a loss, and vice versa.

The game play is perfectly balanced. Go out on full attack and you will soon find your defenses in tatters while concentrate on your defenses and you’ll never break through your brothers walls. The controls are smooth, sound effects are effective and with an appropriately Peruvian soundtrack that plays along in the background it’s difficult to find anything not to like about this game and we are not even finished yet!

The main Story Mode of the game offers a lot of value and with the 3 difficulty levels it should keep you entertained for some considerable time to come. Fleeced! also overs multi-player options not only over local Bluetooth and local WiFi but also via the internet. The two local options worked flawlessly with only one disconnect during multiple games and that’s probably more to do with the connection than the game itself. Unfortunately as this was a pre-release version of the game I wasn’t able to play the game in it’s online mode but if it’s just as good as the local multi-player mode the extra life that it will give the game should make this a keeper!
