I have reviewed many top-tier tablets, and for children’s devices, I typically search for robust cases, comprehensive parental controls, vibrant applications, and durable hardware that can withstand the chaos a young child might unleash. The AT&T amiGO Jr. Tab 2 checks all these boxes, but the feature that stood out to me after handing it to my five-year-old wasn’t the matte display, the absence of AI, or the array of entertainment options. Instead, it was something missing in other tablets like the Amazon Fire: it comes with a stylus.
The AT&T amiGO Jr. Tab 2 is an 8.7-inch Android tablet tailored specifically for young children. It combines a sturdy design with straightforward parental controls. The anti-glare screen and included stylus allow children to draw, trace, color, and practice writing, which complements other activities like gaming, reading, and video watching. Parents can manage app access, set screen time limits, and utilize AT&T’s amiGO app for added safety features. Notably, the tablet lacks built-in AI tools, which means no distractions from AI interactions. It includes 64GB of storage and a 6,000mAh battery, and supports AT&T 5G, making it usable away from home.
Stylus: A Unique Addition to Kids’ Tablets
Honestly, it took a few days of my son using the tablet before I noticed it included a stylus. Hidden in a snug compartment on the back of the cover was a crayon-like stylus ideally sized for small hands. The design isn’t flawless. For instance, I would prefer if the protective bumper attached more securely and if the stylus were attached to the case more firmly. If there’s one thing certain about small children and accessories, it’s that they often end up lost in the house. Indeed, we misplaced the stylus within days, though I found a suitable two-pack replacement on Amazon.
Nevertheless, observing my son use the amiGO Jr. Tab 2 daily has made it clear that thoughtful design decisions were made to cater to the needs of younger users.
Setup Simplicity
Setting up the tablet was straightforward. The parental controls were refreshingly simple, and importantly, the tablet does not push AI at its young users. There’s no AI on this device unless you opt-in by downloading specific apps or enabling Google features, all of which can be disabled.
I linked the tablet to my account rather than giving my son free rein, allowing me to manage what he accessed without needing to hover over him constantly. This setup enabled me to select permissible apps, set screen time boundaries, and lock out features I deemed inappropriate.
This simplicity, the absence of a conversational AI or AI-generated content, is something I value in a device intended for young children. The tablet sticks to providing games, videos, books, drawing apps, and only the apps I choose to install.
A Reasonably Priced, Quality Tablet
We use AT&T, but non-AT&T customers can still find ease in using this tablet through the amiGO app, which offers location tracking and communication tools. This feature is particularly useful if the tablet is used outside the home, providing an additional method for parents to monitor both the device and their child.

The Matte Display: A Surprising Star
The matte, anti-glare screen of the amiGO Jr. Tab 2 is notably different from the glossy displays of devices like the iPad or Fire Tablet. This might seem trivial, but the advantages are clear once a child uses the device. The matte finish reduces glare, minimizes the visibility of fingerprints (a common issue with young children), and provides a slight resistance when using the stylus, unlike the slick surface of typical glass screens. This resistance is subtle but improves the drawing and writing experience for young users.
The stylus, in particular, encourages my son to engage with the tablet more thoughtfully. Instead of randomly tapping the screen, he uses the stylus to color, trace shapes, and letters, enhancing his control and dexterity.
From a durability standpoint, the tablet withstands significant abuse. It survived being thrown onto a driveway, a testament to its rugged design, although I don’t recommend testing it this way!

The AT&T amiGO Jr. Tab 2 strikes an excellent balance, offering just what young children need in a tablet without the complications of advanced technology. It eschews AI, focusing instead on core experiences like drawing, reading, and game-playing. This tablet truly understands its audience, providing just the right features to both entertain and educate, without unnecessary distractions.
