Apple iPad mini OLED with A20 Pro: New Compact Powerhouse Unveiled

Apple has just revealed its redesigned iPad mini via a press release, introducing an 8.5-inch OLED display with much slimmer bezels, a thinner chassis with water- and dust-resistance, and a new speaker technology. The compact tablet is powered by the A20 Pro chip. Pricing starts at €759, and the device will be available November 6.

This generation of the iPad mini moves to OLED — a technology that until now was reserved for the iPad Pro. That brings true blacks and improved brightness: while the previous LCD model topped out at 500 nits in SDR, the new OLED panel reaches 600 nits in SDR and can hit 1,200 nits at HDR peaks. The screen can also dim down to 1 nit. However, ProMotion’s 120 Hz adaptive refresh is not included — the display refreshes at a fixed 60 Hz. It is also not a Tandem OLED panel; the iPad Pro still benefits from higher brightness levels (about 1,000 nits in SDR and up to 1,600 nits in HDR). A nano-texture screen glass option is available (+€130) on the 256 GB and 512 GB configurations.

Apple has significantly slimmed down the display borders, cutting bezel thickness by 24% compared with the previous model. That reduction allowed Apple to increase the screen size from 8.3 inches to 8.5 inches while making the tablet more compact overall: the new dimensions are 132.6 x 195.3 mm versus 134.8 x 195.4 mm on the outgoing model. The device is noticeably thinner, dropping from 6.3 mm to 5.4 mm. Weight has been reduced as well: the Wi‑Fi model goes from 293 g down to 255 g, and the cellular version from 297 g to 263 g.

The 12-megapixel Center Stage front camera is now embedded in the horizontal bezel. Apple did not take this opportunity to introduce Face ID sensors; biometric unlocking remains via Touch ID built into the side button. On the rear, there is a 12-megapixel wide camera. The True Tone flash has been redesigned to be adaptive, aiming to reduce shadows when scanning documents.

The iPad mini with the A20 Pro chip is the first iPad to receive an IP67 rating for water and dust resistance, meaning it can withstand use in the rain or accidental submersion. The tablet also debuts a new speaker system: with the Acoustic Display setup, tweeters and woofers are positioned under the glass and the enclosure rather than exposed.

Under the hood there’s a substantial upgrade: the A17 Pro has been replaced by the new A20 Pro, which delivers a marked performance increase. There are two variants of the A20 Pro configuration: models with 128 GB or 256 GB of storage ship with a 5-core CPU and a single Neural Engine, while the 512 GB model includes a 6-core CPU and two Neural Engines. Both configurations use a 7-core GPU.

Apple has added an N1 chip to improve wireless performance and to enable support for Wi‑Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread for smart-home devices. Cellular models include the newer C2 modem for enhanced mobile connectivity. Charging is faster too: Apple claims the battery can reach 50% in 30 minutes when using a charger of at least 35 W. Battery life itself is unchanged, with up to 10 hours on Wi‑Fi or about 9 hours on cellular.

Preorders open on Wednesday, October 28 at 18:10, and the new iPad mini will ship on Friday, November 6. Pricing starts at €759 for the 128 GB Wi‑Fi model, compared with €689 for the previous generation. The 256 GB model is €889, and the 512 GB model is €1,139. The nano-texture glass option adds €130, and cellular-capable versions cost an extra €170. The tablet will be offered in just two finishes: Starlight and Midnight. Apple is also releasing a new Smart Folio priced at €89.

This announcement kicks off a series of reveals ahead of Apple’s press event in Los Angeles titled “Pro and tell” on Wednesday, October 28. After today’s iPad mini news, Apple may unveil refreshed iMacs and a 14-inch MacBook Pro with an M6 chip in the coming days. The highlight expected for the event is a highly anticipated MacBook Pro featuring an OLED touchscreen.
