Apple Boosts Trade-In Values for iPads and Macs: Sign of Broader Price Hikes

Trade-in boosts of as much as $365 for some models

At its “Pro and Tell” presentation, Apple unveiled the refreshed iPad mini 8 — the company’s first compact tablet to use an OLED panel. The event also hinted that updated MacBooks are coming later this week.

The iPad mini 8 represents a significant upgrade, but it arrives with a higher price: the starting MSRP is $699, a $100 jump from the previous entry price. If you prefer financing, that works out to about $58.25 per month over a 12-month plan. To help offset the steeper cost, Apple has increased the trade-in payouts for older iPads.

The uplift in trade-in values isn’t huge — in many cases it’s only around $20 more than earlier rates — but it could soften the blow of the new tablet’s sticker price for some customers.

The potential trade-in amounts vary by model and depend heavily on the hardware generation and condition. Here are the updated estimated maximum trade-in values Apple is listing for iPads:

Remember, those figures represent the top-end amounts you might receive for a recent model in excellent condition. Older units or devices with damage will trade for less.

Mac and MacBook trade-in payouts

Apple appears poised to refresh its MacBook lineup this week, likely introducing a new MacBook Pro powered by the M6 chip — the same chip we recently reviewed in the updated Mac mini — and, for the first time, an OLED touchscreen MacBook Pro. Those upgrades suggest higher retail prices for the new machines.

Updated MacBook models expected this week may carry higher prices; trade-in credits can help.

Indeed, rumors and early signals point to a potential price tag near $3,000 for the OLED MacBook model, which makes the increased trade-in credits a welcome bit of relief for buyers looking to offset that cost.

Below are the current maximum trade-in values Apple is quoting for Macs and desktops:

  • MacBook Pro — up to $1,435
  • MacBook Air — up to $795
  • iMac — up to $440
  • iMac Pro — up to $340
  • Mac mini — up to $645
  • Mac Studio — up to $1,700
  • Mac Pro — up to $2,560

These amounts give you an idea of what Apple might credit you toward a new purchase, assuming the machine is a recent model in very good condition. As with iPads, the exact offer will depend on the model year and the physical and functional state of the device.

Apple has announced that iPad mini 8 preorders will begin on Wednesday, October 28, with deliveries starting November 6. It’s reasonable to expect similar preorder and shipping timing for the updated MacBook models when they’re announced.

How to trade in your iPad or Mac

If you haven’t used Apple’s trade-in program before, you can swap in an old device either online during checkout or in person at an Apple Store.

Trading in at a store is fairly simple: unpair any connected accessories, back up your data, and sign out of services such as iCloud, the App Store and iTunes. For iPads, you don’t necessarily need to wipe the device yourself — an Apple specialist can help with erasing and preparing it at the store.

For Macs, Apple asks that you erase the drive and reinstall macOS before bringing the machine in. After you hand it to a specialist, they’ll inspect the computer and provide a trade-in value. If a device doesn’t qualify for any credit, Apple will offer to recycle it for you.

To trade in online, you’ll usually attach the old device as part of the purchase flow for a new product, and you’ll need the device’s serial number. Apple will email a trade-in confirmation that includes instructions for backing up and prepping the device. You can then either mail the device back to Apple or take it to an Apple Store — the confirmation email will detail the next steps and include any required shipping materials.
