Apple had said it would add support for SynthID when unveiling the iPhone 18 Pro in September. That invisible watermark standard, developed by Google DeepMind to flag images created or altered by AI, has now been rolled into Apple’s system software version 27.2 releases that went out last night. You can verify whether the watermark is present using the SynthID Detector website. Although Apple does not yet appear on SynthID’s list of recognized publishers — which currently includes names like NVIDIA, OpenAI, Google and Kakao — the detector is successfully identifying the watermark.

The SynthID watermark is applied to pictures produced with Image Playground, and it also appears on images edited with the Photos app’s Extend and Crop tools. MacRumors points out that photos touched up with the Fix tool only show the SynthID identifier in some cases, suggesting that whether the watermark remains depends on how extensive the corrections are.
