Causes of the Delay

According to Mark Gurman, these delays can be attributed to a memory crisis. Beyond soaring costs, Apple is reportedly struggling to secure the necessary quantities from its suppliers. Gurman notes that Apple has been forced to prioritize, choosing to focus on its 14-inch entry-level MacBook Pro, “partly to pave the way for an update to the M6 chip planned for this fall” around October. However, an update to the MacBook Air featuring the M6 chip is not expected until early 2027.

Impact on Promotional Offers

This shortage has reportedly led Apple to delay its Back to School promotion, which launched in the United States on July 16, traditionally starting in June, and is still not available in Europe. Apple has also adjusted some of its marketing materials to include a note indicating that the MacBook Air is available “subject to availability.” Both online and in-store, Apple appears to be promoting the upgrade to the entry-level MacBook Pro over the MacBook Air, a strategy that is rarely, if ever, seen before.
