Interoperability Requirements of the European DMA Impact Both Android and iOS
Both Android and iOS platforms are subject to the interoperability requirements outlined by the European Digital Markets Act (DMA). This means that the integration of third-party technologies like Gemini on Android or Siri AI on iOS must adhere to the same regulations. These rules mandate that both platforms allow third-party AI access to the same data as their native AI systems, effectively the entire system.
Apple and Google’s Response to DMA Regulations
Apple has expressed its disagreement with this policy, arguing that it poses a risk to the privacy of its users. Due to the lack of an agreement with the EU on implementing safeguards to prevent complete data access, Apple has decided not to offer Siri AI in the EU. Similarly, Google has resisted compliance for the same privacy concerns. However, Alphabet’s subsidiary has taken a different approach by integrating Gemini as is, leaving it to the EU to respond.
European Commission’s Binding Decision
This Thursday, the European Commission issued a legally binding decision that requires Google to implement the requested changes by July 2027. Google has promptly expressed its disappointment with the decision, stating it “could undermine essential privacy and security protections for millions of Europeans.” The company may consider challenging this decision in court. Undoubtedly, Apple’s legal team is closely monitoring this situation as well.
