Initial Teardown of the MacBook Neo
A recent disassembly of the MacBook Neo has revealed that accessing its various components is remarkably easy. The design features a modular assembly, allowing most of the main components, including the battery—which is not glued to the frame—to be easily unscrewed. More good news comes from Apple’s published repair manuals: the keyboard can now be replaced separately! Although the keyboard itself is held in place by around fifty screws and requires the removal of the battery and all components under the keyboard first, replacing it is feasible without significant technical difficulties. You can find a guide on replacing the MacBook Neo’s keyboard on this page.
Apple’s Usual Repair Design
If you think such a design should be standard, it’s important to note that this has not always been the case with Apple products. In models like the MacBook Air or MacBook Pro, replacing a faulty keyboard involves substituting the entire top case—the upper part of the chassis, which includes the battery in the MacBook Pro. This process is notoriously complicated and expensive, with repair costs reaching several hundred euros out of warranty.
Anticipated Repair Costs and Future Developments
While the exact repair costs (or the price of a replacement keyboard at Apple’s Self Service Repair Store) have not yet been disclosed, it is expected to be significantly more affordable than those for the MacBook Air or MacBook Pro. There is also hope that Apple will continue to apply this improved design philosophy in the upcoming redesign of the MacBook Pro expected later this year. Another intriguing question remains: who will be the first YouTuber to swap keyboards between two MacBook Neos of different colors?
