The app was developed as part of an open-source collective called “and Other Stuff”, financially backed by the former Twitter head. Its official description highlights that the app does not require an email address or phone number to connect.

Bitchat Arrives on iPhone for Offline Chatting

The application is built on a mesh Bluetooth network model. It enables compatible devices – including iPhone, iPad, Mac, and even Apple Vision Pro – to communicate directly without a central server. Messages are encrypted, and a “panic mode” allows for the deletion of all data with three presses.

This tool can be especially handy during events, festivals, or in areas where connectivity is limited. As long as the devices are within range, users can chat. The app also works if the phone is in airplane mode, provided Bluetooth is turned on. This makes it a discreet and convenient option in numerous scenarios.

Jack Dorsey describes this initiative as an experiment with decentralized networks and offline communications. Bitchat is designed with a focus on privacy and technological resilience. While not a novel idea – similar apps have been around for over a decade – this one benefits from active open-source development. Its launch on the App Store might make this type of messaging more popular in specific contexts.
