Update on RCS Universal Profile by GSM Association
The GSM Association has recently released an update to the RCS Universal Profile, enhancing it to version 3.1. This update significantly improves the quality of audio messages by incorporating the xHE-AAC codec, which ensures a clearer and more natural playback for both voice and other types of recordings. Additionally, this new version introduces enhanced mechanisms for connecting RCS clients to carrier services, which promises a smoother and more dependable user experience, especially in areas with poor coverage.
Apple’s Adoption of RCS with iOS 18
Last year, with the launch of iOS 18, Apple began supporting RCS, which is considered a modern successor to traditional SMS. RCS offers features similar to those of iMessage, but as a standard, it allows for compatibility with Android devices. However, as of now, iOS does not fully support the RCS Universal Profile 3.0, which includes end-to-end encryption for conversations. Apple committed to this feature in March of the previous year but has yet to specify a timeline for its implementation.
