How Is the Chatbot Arena Ranking Constructed?
The Chatbot Arena was established by the Large Model Systems Organization (LMSYS), which includes researchers from the University of California (UC Berkeley) as well as students. The ranking assesses the performance of various AI models available, avoiding biases. Users of the platform can choose, between two anonymously presented models, which one better responds to the submitted prompt.
Subsequently, the models are assigned an Elo score, similar to the ranking system used in chess, which allows for more precise evaluation based on duels: if a model defeats another model with a higher score, it gains points. Conversely, if it loses to a theoretically weaker opponent, it loses points! The project is open source and available on GitHub.
