Until now, Google’s assistant was only available on the latest models. Owners of the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and 6 were left out. But a recent update finally changes this, granting access to Gemini on their small external screen.
Samsung’s foldable smartphones are popular for their convenient external screen. This display allows users to check notifications or use certain apps without fully opening the device. However, until now, those with the latest models didn’t have access to all features, especially those associated with Gemini, Google’s smart assistant.
According to reports from Android Authority, the game is changing with the introduction of Gemini on the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and 6. Previously available on the Galaxy Z Flip 7 and the Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE, the assistant can now be used on the cover screen of the older models. All features are accessible, including both voice and text input, as well as Gemini Live, which allows users to share their camera feed. The only feature missing is screen sharing, a reasonable limitation given the small size of the device.
Gemini Now Operates on the Galaxy Z Flip 6’s Cover Screen
The activation of Gemini doesn’t necessarily require a traditional update. Some users report that Gemini appeared after a server-side update or an application update. To activate the assistant, users can simply say “Hey Google” or use Samsung’s Good Lock module. However, holding down the power button still prompts a message to open the phone, which can disrupt the smoothness of the experience. This issue might be addressed in future updates by the brand.

For now, Gemini on the external screen is only available on devices running One UI 8 based on Android 16. Users who are part of Samsung’s beta program are the first to benefit from this compatibility. This shows that Google and Samsung are enhancing their collaboration on artificial intelligence features. For Galaxy Z Flip 5 and 6 users, this update transforms the external screen into a much more robust tool, capable of answering questions or performing quick tasks without the need to open the smartphone.
