Introduction of watchOS 26 Leads to the Removal of Several Watch Faces
Launched this Monday, watchOS 26 is eliminating a number of watch faces, as spotted by early beta users. Among those being removed are Fire and Water, Gradient, Liquid Metal, Toy Story, and Vapor. Apple frequently updates its range of watch faces, yet this year includes a notable omission with the Toy Story face, which has been especially popular among some users. First introduced in watchOS 4 eight years ago, it featured animated characters such as Woody, Buzz Lightyear, Jessie, Rex the dinosaur, and Hamm the pig.
Possible Reasons for the Removals
While it is possible that some watch faces are being retired due to insufficient user numbers, the Toy Story face is likely being discontinued due to licensing issues. Such licenses are valid for a specific period, and it seems that renewing the license was not deemed cost-effective enough to justify its continuation.
