Apple recently released yet another iPad advertisement, and appears to be using the same strategy in all ads for the new iPad. The advertisement shows an iPad in use against a pure white background, as in all Apple ads. As the user runs through different features such as Twitter, iBooks, and AirPlay, each feature is narrated.

Read it. Tweet it.
Be surprised. Be productive.
Make a sale. Make some lunch.
Make it movie night.
Play a game. Or an old favorite
Do it all more beautifully, with the Retina display, on iPad.

This latest ad continues to show users all of the everyday features that the iPad is capable of and how exactly it would fit into someone’s lifestyle. This is the third ad released for Apple’s new iPad with Retina Display. Ads for the iPad now join the Cupertino company’s popular Siri ads as well as a recent string of ads dedicated to the Genius Bar and Apple’s services.

Apple is not known for use of celebrities to endorse their products. Of course, there were a few promotions a number years back, with The Black Eyed Peas and popular band U2 promoting iTunes and the iPod. However, Apple has never done a celebrity advertisement that showed faces and instead focused mostly on silhouettes.

Apple recently released two advertisements with actor Samuel L. Jackson and actress Zooey Deschanel. Samuel L. Jackson, known for his roles in movies such as Pulp Fiction and Snakes on A Plane and Zooey Deschanel, known for her role in the movie, 500 Days of Summer are both depicted as users of Siri.

Jackson and Deschanel ask Siri for a number of different things, including scheduling appointments, searching recipes, and playing music. The ad focuses on the celebrities using Siri in everyday situations, something that Apple has started to do recently, particularly with the introduction of Siri. This allows Apple to take a more personal approach to drawing in customers for the iPhone 4S and make it attractive to potential users. Siri launched last October with the iPhone 4S, and is still in beta stage, according to Apple’s website.

The ads were made by TBWA\Chiat\Day, who worked closely with Steve Jobs and other Apple executives on hundreds of Apple ads over the year. The ads feature branding for AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon at the end, as there are no brands mentioned in the ad itself. It’s interesting to see Apple begin to use celebrity endorsements for their products and reach even more customers, who are represented brilliantly by Apple’s choice of Jackson and Deschanel.

However, on Thursday, a statement from Sprint CEO Dan Hesse revealed that Sprint is doing exactly what they said they wouldn’t, throttling top 1% of data users on their network. This means that those who over use what is supposed to be unlimted data, are going to be downgraded to slower 2G speeds.

For those that want to abuse it, we can knock them off,” [Sprint CEO Dan] Hesse said at an investor conference Thursday. He said Sprint pares back data use for about 1% of users, a practice known as throttling.

[…]

“You’d be shocked how much data you use in a month,” Sprint asks in a recent television advertisement. “What happens if you go over? With Sprint, you don’t have to worry; only Sprint offers truly unlimited data.

In a Sprint ad, with AT&T and T-Mobile, Sprint points out that T-Mobile throttles its users, not carrying out what they promised. It seems now that Sprint has come to the realization that they must cut back in order to prevent a meltdown of their networks.

Hesse later clarified his statement, pointing out that users who roam on partner networks, such as Verizon with their Sprint iPhone and use more than 300 MB will be throttled.

However, it is interesting to note that most buildings and offices in major cities such as New York City and Los Angeles, often prevent the Sprint network from operating on the iPhone properly. In that case, many users are limited to partner networks and will have used well over 300MB on their iPhone over the course of a billing period.

Apple recently aired two new ads on television that toted the same, “If you don’t have an iPhone” tag line and showed some of the features of the iPhone. No new features were highlighted, however, Apple did go further into detail on some features introduced in iOS 4. The first ad, highlighted the features of Airplay and how photos and videos can be streamed onto a HDTV directly from the device.

The second advertisement released by Apple, featured FaceTime and briefly showed all of the different devices that currently run FaceTime.

The “If you don’t have an iPhone” ad campaign started in late March and continued into Summer 2011. However, this time, the ads end with “just one more thing that makes an iPhone an iPhone.”

Apple introduces new tag lines in a series of advertisements and usually releases ads in installments of two. Apple will likely change the ad campaign once again, following the release of iOS 5, which is pegged for a September release, alongside a rumoured iPad 3 or iPad HD.

Included in the initial launch in France and the UK are L’Oréal, Renault, Louis Vuitton, Nespresso, Perrier, Unilever, Citi, Evian, LG Display, AB InBev, Turkish Airlines and Absolute Radio.

Germany will get iAd in January.

Many developers who have been wishing to leverage Apple’s iAd network in more countries should be happy.

Apple’s advertisers certainly seem happy about it all if L’Oréal are anything to go by:

As the world leader in the beauty business, L’Oréal aims to create the most meaningful connections between its brands and its customers, so iAd was a natural choice,” said Marc Menesguen, L’Oréal’s Head of strategic marketing. “We’re thrilled by the quality, the interactivity and the depth of iAd’s user experience, giving us an unparalleled opportunity to reach and serve the most engaged and discerning customers at the digital forefront of beauty, hence our choice of Lancôme to lead our iAd campaign.

And those of us that try to avoid ads as much as possible can all heave a huge sigh of frustration and apprehension!

Here is Apple’s full Press Release in full…

Apple’s iAd Coming to Europe in December

Revolutionary Mobile Advertising Network Will Launch in Europe with L’Oréal, Renault, Louis Vuitton, Nespresso, Perrier & Unilever

CUPERTINO, California—November 18, 2010—Apple® today announced it will expand its revolutionary iAd℠ mobile advertising network to the UK and France this December, with Germany to follow in January. iAd will launch in Europe with iAds from L’Oréal, Renault, Louis Vuitton, Nespresso, Perrier, Unilever, Citi, Evian, LG Display, AB InBev, Turkish Airlines and Absolute Radio. Since its US launch in July, iAd has emerged as a powerful new way for advertisers to reach millions of iPhone® and iPod touch® users right in their favorite apps, while providing a significant new revenue stream for developers. iAd has signed on over half of the top 25 leading US national advertisers in just four months,* with a projected 21 percent share of US mobile display advertising revenue for 2010 according to research firm IDC.**

“We’re thrilled to add leading global brands to the iAd Network in Europe and create even more great opportunities for developers,” said Andy Miller, Apple’s vice president of iAd. “In just four months, we’ve doubled the number of advertisers on the network and thousands of developers now have a valuable new source of revenue.”

“As the world leader in the beauty business, L’Oréal aims to create the most meaningful connections between its brands and its customers, so iAd was a natural choice,” said Marc Menesguen, L’Oréal’s Head of strategic marketing. “We’re thrilled by the quality, the interactivity and the depth of iAd’s user experience, giving us an unparalleled opportunity to reach and serve the most engaged and discerning customers at the digital forefront of beauty, hence our choice of Lancôme to lead our iAd campaign.”

iAd, which is built into iOS 4, lets users stay within their current app while engaging with an ad, even while watching a video, playing a game or using in-ad purchase to download an app or buy iTunes® content. With user engagement times averaging more than 60 seconds per visit, iAds combine the narrative quality of TV ads with the interactivity of digital for something entirely new.

Advertisers can learn more at advertising.apple.com. Developers who join the iAd Network can easily incorporate a variety of advertising formats into their apps. Developers will receive an industry standard 60 percent of the iAd Network revenue, which is paid via iTunes Connect. Developers can visit developer.apple.com/iad to join the iAd Network or to learn more about the iAd platform.

Serving ads for publishers providing video content is very limited on Apple’s iOS devices due to the absence of Adobe Flash, however this might change as Apple is rumored to be working on iAds for video content which could be introduced very soon.

MacRumors today reported that NewTeeVee published a report which suggested that Apple is working on adding the capability to add “in-stream ads” for video content providers:

The ad product would not only enable video publishers to serve their own ads against videos on the iPhone or iPad, but it would give Apple the ability to act as a video ad network for those that don’t wish to sell their own inventory. The in-stream ad system is also expected to have some targeting capabilities built-in, with mobile location data and anonymous user behavior data to help deliver targeted ads to consumers.

This is certainly an interesting development as iAd for video content could open a whole new world of possibilities for iOS devices and would encourage even more publishers to come forward and provide their content. According to sources familiar with this matter Apple is expected to introduce the new ad product as early as Apple’s annual January event and will include the capability to target the ads geographically and would support both Quicktime and HTML5-delivered video.

Advertising Age reported that “a check-in with declared iAd advertisers found that many are still in the early stages of flushing out concepts and creative.”

The report added that “some are weeks — perhaps months — away from having an iAd in the system.” It indicated “an agency exec with several iAds in the works,” as stating, “most advertisers won’t be there on July 1; there just isn’t enough time,” an issue Apple can partly be blamed for.

The report stated that Apple is taking care of “all the technical production of iAds, and telling agencies it will take six to eight weeks to produce an ad after the creative is produced.”

Apple selected July 1st for iAds release date, and “doesn’t necessarily coincide with the objectives of the marketers themselves,” the report said. Apple is telling marketers that the iPad won’t be on the iAd platform until November.

At WWDC earlier this month, Steve Jobs announced that a special build of iOS 4 would be released for iPad users later in the year, bringing support for iAd, as well as features ranging from multitasking and related background services to Home page Folders and a variety of new developer APIs.
