Mark Zuckerberg recently made a statement that is likely to spark controversy. He believes that soon, not wearing smart glasses equipped with artificial intelligence will be considered a disadvantage. For Meta, these glasses are essential to stay competitive in the tech race.

Meta, led by Mark Zuckerberg, is one such company that is strongly committed to the future of smart glasses. During an investor call, he stated that those who do not use these glasses will soon find themselves at a disadvantage. According to him, these glasses will allow AI to see what you see, hear what you hear, and assist you at all times. The company already markets connected glasses in partnership with brands like Ray-Ban or Oakley, which are capable of taking photos, playing music, or interacting with Meta AI.

Zuckerberg Envisions a Future Where Glasses and AI Merge to Enhance Understanding of the World

For the group, glasses with an integrated display could become as indispensable as smartphones are today. They could seamlessly blend the real world with the digital realm. This is a concept that the company has been developing for years through its Reality Labs division, despite massive losses: $4.53 billion (about €4.15 billion) just in the last quarter, and nearly $70 billion (about €64 billion) since 2020. Mark Zuckerberg is also convinced that AI will transform all digital professions: he recently claimed that Meta’s AI will soon generate the majority of the code used in its services, diminishing the role of human developers.

However, Meta is not alone in this field. Other companies are also exploring new ways to interact with AI: connected pendants, smart brooches, or wearable accessories, often experimental. Although glasses are currently the most plausible option, it is not guaranteed that they will prevail. Mark Zuckerberg sees them as the perfect way to merge the physical and digital worlds — and to revive his vision of the metaverse, which has yet to take off, this time boosted by AI.
