Samsung’s New App Beats Google at Earthquake Alerts: Stay Safe with Advanced Warnings!

Samsung is introducing a new feature to its Galaxy smartphones that may outperform Android’s system in predicting seismic shakes. This innovation includes various customizable settings to tailor alerts to individual needs.

In recent years, smartphones have become critical tools in emergency situations. Various apps are capable of detecting car accidents, issuing weather warnings, and alerting users about natural disasters. With the advent of new sensors and enhanced access to local data, manufacturers are increasingly incorporating safety features into their devices. Earthquakes are among the events that Android devices can now report. In 2024, Google introduced a feature that sends automatic alerts for earthquakes of magnitude 4.5 and higher, using a network of connected smartphones.

However, this feature built into Android is quite basic. It operates on an on/off basis, without any customization options. Samsung is set to offer a more sophisticated version on its Galaxy devices. Spotted by Galaxy Techie, this feature is expected to roll out with One UI 8, the upcoming update to its mobile interface. Screenshots reveal a variety of unique settings to customize earthquake alerts according to user preferences.

Samsung Allows Users to Select Earthquake Magnitude Starting at 1.0 and Adds Customizable Alerts Based on Time of Day

Unlike Google, Samsung allows users to adjust the magnitude level at which an alert is issued. The range starts at 1.0, which includes barely noticeable tremors, up to more significant vibrations at 4.0 magnitude. Users can also set different thresholds for different times of the day, such as to avoid being woken up at night by minor earthquakes. Additionally, there is an option to preview an alert before it goes live.

Samsung also introduces features useful after an earthquake: a log of received alerts, quick access to nearby emergency shelters, and options to contact someone if needed. These features are designed to enhance responsiveness in critical situations. Currently, the system is not yet active but is included in the installation files tested by some users. It is expected to launch officially with the stable release of One UI 8.

The seismic intensity threshold can be adjusted during the day and night to get an alert when an earthquake is detected equal to/greater than the set threshold.
