Android’s popular AI-enhanced feature, Circle to Search, is receiving an upgrade to boost its performance. Google is altering its default search mode to enhance its capabilities and has already begun rolling out this significant update.
Circle to Search (or “Entourer pour chercher” in French) was introduced to Android users in early 2024 and quickly became one of the most useful and efficient AI-powered features. Originally, it allowed users to perform a visual search by circling an item on their screen without the need to exit the app they were using. Since its launch, Google has added several new features to this functionality, including song search, translations that were later enhanced, and full-screen capture to improve fluidity.

However, that’s not all: to further enhance its capabilities, Google incorporated AI Mode into Circle to Search—initially available on the latest foldable Samsung smartphones before expanding to other Android devices. This addition was not initially applicable to additional text queries, which continued to use the standard image search by default. But Google is now addressing this limitation.
Google Replaces Standard Image Search in Circle to Search with AI Mode
Until now, conducting an additional text query was done through a search bar at the top of the Circle to Search results, yielding standard results without AI integration. Now, AI Mode will power the text search function by default.
This update also introduces a new location for the search bar: it is now positioned at the bottom of the results. This change is hardly surprising: Google announced this new search bar in a July update, but it had not been implemented until now.
The automatic support for all queries by AI Mode had already been spotted in June by the team at Android Authority. According to them, this feature is now starting to roll out with version 16.47.49 of the Google app.
While this change could strengthen the integration between AI Mode and Circle to Search, it remains unclear whether users in France will be able to enjoy the newly added capabilities of Google’s AI Mode. Indeed, due to legal uncertainties, this revolutionary internet search feature is still not available in France.
