The Hisense PL2 is an ultra-short-throw projector designed to turn your living room into a cinema without needing much space. Following our review of the brand’s high-end model, the PX3-Pro, and the current best ultra-short-throw projector, the Formovie Theater Premium, we now give you our thoughts on this more affordable yet intriguing version.
Equipped with single-laser technology, it focuses on the longevity of its light source and image quality to attract fans of large screens. Unlike some Hisense models that come with a dedicated screen, the PL2 is sold by itself, giving users the freedom to choose their projection surface. This approach allows it to appeal to a diverse audience, from demanding cinephiles to families looking for versatile multimedia options. Technically, it distinguishes itself with Ultra HD compatibility, support for HDR10, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision (but not IMAX Enhanced), and it runs on the Vidaa operating system, already proven in Hisense TVs. It also supports 3D content.
Compared to competitors like Samsung The Premiere 7 or Xiaomi Laser Cinema, the PL2, which has been on the market for several months now, offers compelling arguments in terms of image quality, connectivity, and ease of use. Its price, which is average for this product category, pits it directly against similarly specced models, but it aims to differentiate itself through its rich features and straightforward installation.
It remains to be seen if, in practical use, it fulfills all its promises and establishes itself as a must-have choice for those looking to invest in an ultra-short-throw laser projector.

Hisense PL2Test Conditions
The Hisense PL2 projector we tested was loaned to us by the brand. It was tested in conjunction with a Lumene Extra Bright Eden 240C screen available at Son-Vidéo.com, specifically designed for ultra-short-throw projectors. Measurements were taken using professional equipment directly in front of the screen to minimize errors and provide values that reflect what viewers actually see. This protocol is the same for all ultra-short-throw projector tests to ensure comparability.
Hisense PL2Design
The Hisense PL2 features a sleek and modern design, true to the brand’s visual identity. Its matte black chassis with clean lines fits easily into a contemporary living room without drawing unnecessary attention.
With dimensions that are relatively compact for an ultra-short-throw model, it easily sits on a low table, just a few centimeters from the wall or screen. The top part, slightly brushed, offers a nice touch and some resistance to fingerprints.
The lack of a protective cover for the lens may disappoint some, including us, in terms of dust management.
The curved, perforated front allows sound from the built-in speakers to pass through while adding a touch of originality to the unit. The front isn’t as elaborate as the PX3-Pro as it is much more understated here, which can also be appreciated.
Vents on either side ensure ventilation, with the option to deactivate the integrated LED lighting for total discretion during projection. On our test model, we noted careful finishing and precise assembly.
The device rests on two height-adjustable feet combined with a rubber bar, making it easy to level on any surface.
We also appreciate the integration of the power block, thus avoiding the unsightly cables often seen with this type of product.
The overall build exudes quality and robustness while remaining discreet enough not to detract from the interior decor. The Hisense PL2 thus achieves a design that is both functional and elegant, sure to satisfy the most demanding users in terms of domestic integration.
Hisense PL2Connections
The Hisense PL2 offers a comprehensive set of connections, designed to meet all everyday needs. At the back of the device, in a recessed housing, there are three HDMI inputs. Two are standard 2.1, full rate while the third is compatible with eARC for returning audio to a soundbar or amplifier. This setup allows you to fully enjoy Ultra HD content and the best possible sound quality, although the eARC port is limited to an Ultra HD 60 Hz video signal, which means you should prefer the other ports for high-frequency gaming uses.
In addition to a USB-A port available on the side of the device, there is another USB-A also present near the other inputs/outputs. The first is ideal for playing multimedia content from a USB stick or external hard drive. Also note the presence of an analog audio output jack 3.5 mm which allows you to connect a headset or a wired external audio system. An optical digital audio output and an Ethernet port complete the offer, ensuring a stable connection to the home network.
The PL2 naturally includes Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, making it easy to share content from a smartphone, tablet, or computer. AirPlay 2 compatibility is a real plus for users of Apple devices, as is the wireless screen-sharing feature, which expands the possibilities for use. We regret, however, the absence of a 12V Trigger port, useful for synchronizing the opening of a motorized screen, although an optional USB dongle can remedy this lack. Compatibility with the Control4 standard may, however, allow the device to be integrated into a complete Home Cinema system, if the appropriate interface is available.
Finally, the PL2 does not have a built-in DTT tuner, which sets it apart from some competitors, such as the Samsung The Premiere and the brand’s Laser TV models. Despite these few absences, the connections of the Hisense PL2 remain very satisfactory and adapted to most domestic uses, whether it’s cinema, gaming, or streaming.
The Remote Control
The remote control provided with the Hisense PL2 breaks with the current trend towards compact models. It is identical to those that come with a Hisense TV. It thus stands out with its generous size, which incorporates numerous direct access buttons to major streaming platforms such as Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, YouTube, and Deezer. Also count on direct access to the brand’s Kid service offering programs suitable for the youngest. This abundance of buttons facilitates navigation and quick access to content, even if the presence of numeric keys may seem superfluous on a projector without a DTT tuner.
At the bottom of the remote control, we particularly appreciate the presence of buttons dedicated to image and sound settings, which avoid multiple manipulations in the menus. Powered by a rechargeable battery via USB-C and equipped with a small solar panel to maintain its charge, the remote control proves practical in everyday use. Its Bluetooth connection means you don’t have to precisely aim at the projector, and the integrated microphone allows you to use voice commands to control the Vidaa interface. The only regret is the lack of backlighting, which would have been useful for use in the dark. Despite this, the Hisense PL2’s remote control offers a comfortable and complete user experience, meeting expectations for a device of this caliber.
Hisense PL2Screen
The Hisense PL2 projector is delivered without a screen, unlike the Laser Cinema range and unlike Laser TVs that come with a 100 or 120-inch screen, depending on the model chosen. This leaves the choice open, but if the budget is limited, one might also be tempted to install it without a screen by using a wall as the projection surface and thus lose the relatively significant benefit of having a surface optimized for projection. Expect to pay between 500 and 2700 euros for screens of various sizes whose surface benefits from a specific treatment.
Hisense PL2Installation
Like all ultra-short-throw models, the first step in installing the Hisense PL2 is to place it just a few centimeters from the wall or screen. When installed 20 centimeters away from the screen, it produces a 100-inch diagonal image, which is ideal for a home cinema immersion. The adjustable feet allow for compensation for any irregularities in the furniture, thus ensuring a perfectly horizontal image. Keystone correction is available in both automatic and manual modes.
In automatic mode, using a smartphone to photograph the projected image is enough, and the projector then adjusts the geometry. However, this doesn’t always work very well. No problem, we switch to manual mode. Then, the adjustments are finer but require a bit more time. The focus can also be adjusted automatically or manually.
On the PL2, the image is sharp across almost the entire surface, although there is sometimes a very slight loss of sharpness in the upper corners, a common flaw in many ultra-short-throw projectors. The entire installation process is quick and hassle-free, making the Hisense PL2 accessible to both novices and experienced users.
Hisense PL2Image Quality in Subjective Mode
The Hisense PL2 uses a 0.47-inch DMD chip from Texas Instruments combined with a single-laser light source, a setup that allows it to simulate an Ultra HD image using XPR technology. This technology projects several slightly offset Full HD images at a very high frequency, thus creating the illusion of an Ultra HD image.
Several image modes are available: Standard, Filmmaker, Cinema Day, Cinema Night, Dynamic, and Sport, each suited to specific uses.
When switching to Dolby Vision content, there are the Dolby Vision Bright, Dolby Vision Dark, and Dolby Vision Custom modes.
In our tests, the Filmmaker mode proved to be the most balanced, offering faithful color reproduction and good respect for image dynamics. SDR content benefits from a pleasant softness, without excessive sharpness or digital “over-enhancement”. Dark scenes are well managed, with a high level of contrast allowing many details to be distinguished in the shadows, while bright areas remain vibrant without being burnt out.
HDR content, whether from streaming platforms or Blu-ray discs, fully benefits from the Dolby Vision certification, with rich colors and subtle gradients. Edge management is precise, without artificial effects, and the overall image retains a beautiful naturalness, even in the most demanding sequences.
Whether for movies, series, or sporting events, the Hisense PL2 delivers high-quality, immersive images that are enjoyable to watch over time.
Motion Compensation
The Hisense PL2 incorporates MEMC technology for motion compensation, ensuring appreciable fluidity during action scenes or fast camera movements. Sports sequences or action movies thus benefit from a natural rendering, without jerking or annoying artifacts. Even during the most complex scenes, with objects or characters moving quickly against detailed backgrounds, motion management remains convincing, although some glitches may occur in extreme situations. Overall, the motion compensation of the PL2 allows for a comfortable visual experience, close to what one might expect from a high-end projector.
The Rainbow Effect
Like any projector using DLP technology, the Hisense PL2 does not completely escape the rainbow effect, a visual phenomenon where brief colored flashes appear on moving bright objects or subtitles. However, on this model, the effect is particularly limited and does not bother the majority of viewers. Its perception remains very subjective and depends on individual sensitivity, but during our tests, it was not particularly marked, even in contrasted scenes or on dark backgrounds. For most users, it should therefore not be a hindrance to using the PL2 on a daily basis.
