The fourth beta version of iOS 26, released this Tuesday, includes an update for Free Mobile carrier settings enabling Wi-Fi SMS support, as identified by Tiino-X83. This feature allows users to send text messages without a cellular connection, similar to Wi-Fi calling which has been available since December 2022 with iOS 16.2. Wi-Fi calling enables phone calls over a Wi-Fi network, which is particularly useful in buildings where cellular reception is poor.

This capability has been available for several years with the other three major French carriers: Orange, Bouygues Telecom, and SFR. It is important to note that the RCS standard, which has been supported on iPhones by all four carriers since spring, also relies on data and does not require a cellular network. Currently in its beta phase, iOS 26 is expected to be finalized and released to the general public in September.
