Exclusive Peek: Inside Apple’s Cutting-Edge Test Lab in Cork

Vidéo : une visite du laboratoire de test d'Apple à Cork
While the majority of Apple’s product development occurs at its headquarters in Cupertino, the company conducts extensive reliability testing at its European headquarters in Cork, Ireland. In a rare move, Apple slightly opened the doors of two of its laboratories to a select group of journalists and YouTubers, including TheiCollection from France. The video below showcases some of the tests carried out in the Reliability Lab, which assesses product durability, and the Applied Research Lab, which seeks to identify the smallest flaws in the products. Unusually for this demonstration, Apple did not use prototypes but instead demonstrated tests on iMac and iPhone models that are already on the market.

Visitors can see a variety of equipment used to simulate different environmental conditions such as temperature and humidity, sand to mimic usage in desert or dusty environments, and both fresh and saltwater to analyze product reactions under various usage conditions. There are machines designed to simulate a vast number of manipulations to test the resilience of mechanisms and structures. For example, these machines can alter the angle of an iMac on its stand, insert a cable into a USB-C connector, or apply pressure to a screen. Other tests include evaluating the durability of packaging against drops and impacts. Additionally, there are glimpses of tests performed on iPhones, using scanners and microscopes to detect anomalies that are not visible to the naked eye.
