The familiar voice of ChatGPT is set to vanish soon. OpenAI has decided to permanently switch from the standard voice mode to a quicker, more expressive alternative. This change has met with mixed reactions; here’s why.

Voice assistants have become ubiquitous, whether it’s for asking a question, reading a message, or controlling smart devices. Their effectiveness hinges not just on the accuracy of their responses, but also on the tone of delivery. A voice that sounds too mechanical or impersonal can make interactions less enjoyable, even if the underlying technology is advanced. ChatGPT originally offered a “standard” voice mode, valued for its neutrality and simplicity, which gradually became the go-to voice of the service.

However, OpenAI has recently announced that this standard mode will be phased out. Starting September 9, 2025, it will be replaced by what is now termed simply “ChatGPT Voice.” This upgraded version was initially tested with a small user group in 2024 and has been expanded this year. Unlike the previous system that read responses generated by the model word for word, the advanced version utilizes an integrated processing system. It understands vocal requests, formulates responses, and delivers them promptly, with a tone and pace that are considered more human-like.

ChatGPT’s New Voice Splits Opinion Over Its Robotic Tone

Not everyone is convinced by this new development. Many users have expressed a preference for the standard voice, which they describe as more calm, warm, and reassuring. The new voice is often perceived as too fast and hurried, as if the AI is eager to end the conversation quickly. Some users also feel that the responses are less detailed, since they are no longer a verbatim reading of the text but are instead summarized more succinctly. Feedback on Reddit and OpenAI forums highlights a loss of naturalness and a sense of disconnection.

The advanced voice mode was designed to create a smoother, more human-like impression. It adjusts intonation in real-time and condenses sentences to make the conversation more engaging. A segment of users appreciates this new approach, viewing it as more modern and realistic. OpenAI has also stated that further enhancements are planned in the coming months. However, as the recent reversal from GPT-4o back to GPT-5 demonstrated, the company may reconsider its decisions based on user feedback.
