In recent months, OpenAI has expanded its offerings to cater to various user profiles of ChatGPT, from casual to intensive users. ChatGPT Free: Features and Limitations

Since November 2022, ChatGPT has been available for free, without any ads, and for over a year, it has been usable without even creating an account. The goal? To let everyone explore the capabilities of the conversational agent and to rely on the “wow” effect to turn visitors into customers.

Originally, this free version operated without any restrictions, performing tasks that now seem fairly basic, such as generating or rephrasing text or offering idea suggestions and recommendations. However, in recent months, OpenAI has shifted its strategy, likely aware that its tool, now with 700 million active users weekly, has become a staple for many. The California-based company has gradually introduced features that were initially exclusive to paying users to the free version, while significantly tightening usage limits.

Now powered by the GPT-5.2 model, its latest technology, the free version offers the following features:

• Custom GPTs,
• The app store,
• Translation tool,
• Image generation.

However, there are numerous restrictions. As of January 2026, free users can only request ChatGPT about ten times within a five-hour period, even for simple tasks. Advanced features, such as image generation or file uploads, are also subject to stricter usage limits, according to an OpenAI help page. Access to the chatbot may also be restricted during peak times, and once limits are reached, it is no longer possible to switch to an older model; GPT-5.2 is the only one available.

This version is still suitable for very occasional use, but it may fall short for daily use.

ChatGPT Go: Pricing, Features, Limitations

Launched in August in India and quietly introduced in France in December, ChatGPT Go is priced at 8 euros per month, or 4 euros for users already subscribed to a paid plan. It positions itself as a “low-cost” alternative to ChatGPT Plus, unlocking access to other advanced features while still maintaining certain usage caps that can quickly become restrictive.

In addition to offering higher limits for text queries with GPT-5.2, which is the core of this offer, ChatGPT Go provides access to:

• Extended memory, for more personalized responses,
• The “Projects” feature, which allows users to organize conversations into thematic folders,
• The “Tasks” feature, enabling the creation of reminders and automation of certain recurring tasks,
• The “thinking mini” GPT-5.2 model, designed to better handle complex tasks requiring deep reasoning,
• Higher limits for image generation, file uploads, data analysis, and queries to custom GPTs.

The overall usage limits, which OpenAI does not publicly detail, remain significantly lower than those of ChatGPT Plus. This low-cost plan also lacks some of the chatbot’s most sophisticated capabilities, such as Deep Research or Agent mode, and does not allow the use of Sora.

ChatGPT Plus: Pricing, Features, and Limitations

Priced at 23 euros per month, ChatGPT Plus is a premium subscription targeting “advanced users,” according to OpenAI. Launched in February 2023, it has offered several notable benefits since its inception, such as availability of the conversational agent even during high traffic, faster response times, and, most importantly, priority access to new features. With few exceptions, subscribers to ChatGPT Plus have always had first access to innovations that enhance the experience. This is in addition to enjoying a high number of requests.

Apart from the features included in the free and Go versions, ChatGPT Plus allows users to access:

• Deep Research, ChatGPT’s in-depth research mode capable of analyzing and synthesizing hundreds of sources in record time,
• Agent mode, which can take control of a computer to perform a variety of tasks autonomously,
• Sora, OpenAI’s video generator, with some usage restrictions,
• Codex, the AI agent specialized in web development.

This plan also benefits from the most recent models from OpenAI before their general rollout, as well as various reasoning modes available (Thinking, Instant, Auto, in the case of GPT-5.2). ChatGPT Plus also offers the option to revert to an older model if the user feels that the latest version does not meet their needs.

As for restrictions, they are minimally obstructive, except during periods of high traffic, where a message cap may be imposed by OpenAI to “ensure a smooth experience for everyone.” This plan is thus suitable for users who engage with ChatGPT on a daily basis, as the usage quotas are difficult to reach.

ChatGPT Pro: Pricing, Features, and Limitations

Launched in December 2024 and costing a hefty 229 euros per month, the ChatGPT Pro plan targets intensive users of the chatbot, offering expanded access to some particularly resource-intensive features, such as Codex, Agent mode, advanced voice mode, or Sora. At the same time, it allows an unlimited number of text queries and image generations.

To prevent misuse associated with this unlimited access, OpenAI has also implemented certain safeguards, including prohibiting automatic data extraction or the use of an account to feed an external service. It is also impossible to share a Pro account with other users.

At its launch, OpenAI made another promise to its Pro subscribers: privileged access to pre-versions of “more powerful” features. The California-based company has sometimes kept this promise, notably offering ChatGPT Pulse, a personalized morning briefing, or deploying some advanced reasoning models, like o3 pro.

However, whether this justifies such a price difference with ChatGPT Plus is still an open question. For some developers or software engineers who code continuously and regularly encounter the limits of ChatGPT Plus, or for consultants and analysts who produce numerous reports, the investment may be justifiable. Nevertheless, ChatGPT Pro is aimed at a particularly narrow audience.
