Apple aired two new iPhone ads this week titled “Gamers” and “Reservations”. Both ads are similar to the ones Apple aired when introducing the new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 plus. The ads have been voiced over by Jimmy Fallon and Justin Timberlake.

The new TV ads highlight iOS 8 continuity feature and Apple’s A8 chip that enhances gaming on the new phones. In “Reservations” the ad shows how users can use any iOS 8 device to make a call. iPad and Macs connect to the iPhone over bluetooth and function as a speakerphone for the iPhone giving users the freedom to accept and reject calls from any Apple device that offers the continuity feature.

The ad titled “Gamers” shows off the graphics capabilities of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 plus. The ad feature the game Vainglory by Super Evil Megacorp that takes advantage of the high performance the new chip and Metal API offers.

iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 plus have proved to be the biggest launch success for Apple and the company is still catching up with the demand worldwide. The bugger screen phone has been more successful in the Asian market when compared to the US and the UK.

While Apple continues to advertise the features of its new phones its competitors Samsung and Microsoft are focusing on comparing their offering with Apple’s latest devices.

Apple will be live streaming its iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3 media event today at 10 AM PDT from the Town Hall auditorium at Apple’s Cupertino headquarters. Just last month the company held its iPhone launch event and now its time for new tablets and possibly new retina iMacs.

Media invites were sent out by Apple last week which carried a tag line “It’s been way too long.” While it obviously doesn’t give much hint as to what the company will be unveiling, but it’s quite evident that the iPad lineup will be refreshed for the holiday season. Some are speculating that “been way too long” could be referring to iMacs finally getting Retina Display technology. Apple’s entire product lineup features the high resolution displays except the desktop computer.

We can expect an update on OS X Yosemite release date and it could be made available later this week. We can’t rule out that Apple TV could also be refreshed today. It’s been quite a long while since it has seen any major update.

iPad Air 2 could finally get TouchID making it easier for users to access secure information with the touch of their finger. NFC could also be included to facilitate ApplePay functionality.

A new processor, A8X will bring improved CPU and GPU performance and RAM could be bumped to 2 GB. It is unclear if the new processor will offer improved battery performance on the new iPad Air 2.

It may be hard to believe, but a lot of users do use tablets to take pictures and videos. The new iPad Air 2 is rumoured to feature 8-megapixel camera. We could also see Retina HD displays as iOS 8.1 code did reveal 3x graphics.

iPad mini 3 just like iPad 2 Air is rumoured to feature A8X processor, TouchID, and improved cameras.

Apple’s latest smartphones, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 plus, will be available in the Indian market on October 17. Both phones launched in the US and 9 more countries on September 19; the first weekend sales were reported to be more than 10 million devices.

The company is rolling out the new phones aggressively in all the markets it sells the phone as it aims to make it available in 115 countries by the end of the year. After some regulatory delays the phones will also go on sale in China on the same day as the Indian launch.

Both phones will be available in silver, grey and gold and in three storage capacities. iPhone 6 16GB is priced at Rs 53,500, 64GB is priced at Rs 62,500 and the 128GB version will sell for Rs 71,500. iPhone 6 features 4.7 inch screen with a resolution of 1334×750 pixels.

iPhone 6 plus is the biggest phone Apple has ever introduced and features 5.5 inch screen with full 1080p resolution. iPhone 6 plus 16 GB will sell for Rs 62,500, 64 GB version is priced at Rs 71,500 and 128 GB will sell for Rs 80,500.

Online retailers like Flipkart and local authorised re-sellers have already begun taking pre-orders for the new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 plus in India.

The phones are expected to be available in limited quantity and there’s high possibility of these devices selling out on launch day. Apple is facing unprecedented demand and their supply chain is trying its best to cope up with the demand. iPhone 6 plus demand is more than what the company had expected and it is in the process of ramping up its production.

The bigger iPhone is expected to be more popular in the Indian market as Samsung has dominated this segment with its phablet devices.

The National Breast Cancer Foundation and Bandai Namco Games America have teamed up to fight the second leading cause of cancer deaths among women in the US.

Bandai Namco Games America is running a special Ms. Pac-Man Pink Ribbon campaign across a selection of its smartphone and tablet titles throughout the month of October in order to raise money.!
The funds gathered will allow the cancer charity to help those affected by breast cancer via early detection, education, and other helpful support services.

“Awareness and early diagnosis are critical in the fight against breast cancer,” James Kucera, Bandai Namco’s head of mobile, said. “We are proud to lend our voice to the fight with Ms. Pac- Man and Bandai Namco’s Pink Ribbon Campaign.”

It’s simple to take part. Simply download Ms. Pac-Man or one of the other Pac-Man titles featured in the campaign, and then download the exclusive new themed 69p/99c maze that’s for sale. All proceeds made from the maze go directly to the NBCF, so get downloading it.

Apple’s entry into the big screen smartphone market has been largely successful considering the record 10 million iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 plus units sold in the opening weekend, however there has been one particular “issue” that seems to suggest otherwise.

After a few images of a bent iPhone 6 plus surfaced online the media took immediate notice and widely reported the “bendgate”. A video posted by Unbox Therapy demonstrated how putting a lot of pressure can bend the iPhone 6 plus went viral. As the mainstream media and even television shows took notice, it became obvious that Apple would soon have to issue a public response to iPhone 6 plus bending when someone tried to, you guessed it, bend the phone.

We reported on Apple’s response and the company even invited the press to iPhone testing facility to show how the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 plus go through a series of test to simulate real world usage.

Smartphone insurance company Square Trade’s verdict was simply that the latest phones from Apple are “more durable than any before them.”

Most publications which reviewed the device after testing it wrote highly about the new phones and praised Apple for creating the best iPhone yet.

If this wasn’t enough, Consumer Reports unhappy with the “unscientific” nature of the viral video went ahead and performed their own scientific tests to examine how much force does it take to break the new phones. The tests revealed that it takes 70 pounds to bend the iPhone 6 and 90 pounds to bend the iPhone 6 plus. The publication concluded “any of these phones should stand up to typical use.”

After reading multiple stories and watching many videos, here are my views and also an open letter to tech journalists.

Dear Journalists,

One thing is clear: Things break! That’s it. Things break!

If one puts enough pressure or handles things in a way it is not meant to then it would most certainly break.

I sincerely appreciate all the drop tests and bend tests that are published online. These videos show us the extent of damage that can be caused to our devices in case it suffers an extreme situation. While the iPhone 6 plus did survive the drop test here and here, it seems that it doesn’t pass the bend test.

I’ve wondered why this happens. Each iPhone bending video I watch shows the person trying very hard, gasping, pursing their lips, fingers shivering and skin blanching to the extreme while performing the bendgate. They are giving it whatever they have to prove that iPhone 6 plus bends when you put extreme pressure on it.

If the same people who performed this test actually took time and came back to report that the iPhone 6 plus bends under normal use over a period of maybe 15 or 30 days it would have proved to be a more believable story.

Only 9 out of the 10 million reported any bending issue, according to Apple. So, people who actually use their phone like a phone most certainly are not complaining about this issue.

One argument that has become common is that Samsung phones are large too, but it does not bend as much as iPhone. I agree. But, does Apple have to opt for plastic body so that we can be happy that it does not bend much when we intentionally want to bend it? I think Apple is probably not catering to such audience.

I actually wonder why Apple was never struck with “entanglegate” since the headphones entangle when you put it in your pockets. Shocking! Right?

iPhone 6 has an aluminium body and a glass front, the company does not claim either of the materials to be non-destructible. So, stop trying to prove the obvious by intentionally bending the phone. Instead try using the phone in real life and then come back and report if it didn’t meet your expectations. Apple is not responsible for people intentionally trying to deform the device, however if the bending occurs as a result of normal use then the device should be covered under Apple warranty and that story is worth highlighting.

Apple’s latest and greatest products are subject to both, a lot of media attention and scrutiny. Every year the company outperforms its previous iPhone sales records and this year was no exception. Apple sold more than 10 million iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 plus in the opening weekend.

10 million is a huge number of early adopters who probably just saw Apple’s executive team announce the new iPhone 6 and 6 plus and instantly decided to buy it. Customers have time and again shown their trust in the Apple brand and the company has managed to retain their trust.

This year after a few reports and photos of bent iPhone 6 plus appeared online, YouTuber Lewis of Unbox Therapy went ahead and posted a video of him bending an iPhone 6 plus and it did noticeably bend under a lot of pressure. It didn’t take long for the video to go viral and the entire blogosphere and the media started discussing the issue.

Apple has mastered the aluminium unibody design introduced first in MacBook Pro’s and then the iPhone 5. Samsung continues to manufacture its flagship devices made of plastic, however Apple remains committed to aluminium unibody. Most reviews are quick to point out that plastic feels cheap whereas metal body gives devices a high-end premium look and feel.

Many would expect Apple to be aware of any bending issue if it exists since their product engineering teams have been working with metals since a long time. Could Apple have made a huge mistake and put its multi-billion dollar business in jeopardy with its decision to stick with aluminium body for iPhone 6? Didn’t Apple test the device enough before bringing it to the market?

These are some of the most obvious questions that would come to anyone’s mind. So, what really went wrong?

After a brief period of silence Apple released an official statement and even invited the press to the iPhone testing facility in Cupertino. It turns out that according to Apple only 9 out of the ten million users who bought the new phones have reported any bending issue. Dan Ricco, Apple’s SVP Hardware Engineering said, “The bottom line is that if you use enough force to bend an iPhone, or any phone, it’s going to deform,”.

The most secretive company in the world opened its gate for the press to see how the devices are tested. iPhone 6 and 6 plus could be seen going through a number of testing scenarios where the device was put under weight, being bent and even being pushed against a curved piece of cloth to simulate pressure in ones pocket.

According to Apple, iPhones go through more than 15,000 different types of tests and iPhone 6 was the first device to go through the most number of tests ever done.

Apple has been in a similar situation before, when the iPhone 4 was introduced the “Antennagate” issue was reported. If you held the iPhone 4 in a closed grip covering both sides the signal would drop. The company held a special press conference where Steve himself faced the media and saying that every phone when held in a particular position results in loss of signal bars. The company said it would fix its algorithms to show the correct number of signal bars and even gave free bumper case to its customers.

This time the issue seems to be rare and could occur only under uncommon circumstances. The truth is your iPhone will bend if you intentionally or unintentionally put more than “normal” pressure on it and this is true for most devices.

It is noteworthy to mention that smartphone insurance company SqaureTrade tested both new phones and found them to be the toughest iPhone yet.

Apple’s next major software update for its mobile devices iOS 8 is now available for download over the air for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. According to Apple iOS 8 is the “biggest release since the launch of the App Store, with hundreds of new features including new Messages and Photos features, QuickType Keyboard, a new Health app, Family Sharing, iCloud Drive and more.”

The company unveiled its new mobile operating system during the world wide developers conference earlier this year. This release doesn’t just include a number of user facing features but also opens hundreds of new API’s for third-party developers.

With iOS 8 users will experience a completely new Messages app that borrows a number of features from Whatsapp, new Messages app now includes audio messages, instant photo messages (Snapchat?), mute conversation and more. Typing on the new iOS has also been enhanced as Apple introduces QuickType which intelligently recommends words as you type and overtime it learns and adapts to your writing style. QuickType in iOS 8 doesn’t just learn your writing style but also remembers how you communicate with different people.

Apple has heard the requests of its customers and finally introducing iCloud Drive, a central location to find all your documents from Mac, PC or iOS. Did this make you think of Dropbox? Access any of your file from any device connected to iCloud without having to worry about its version. However, it’s worth noting that it is advisable to not opt in for iCloud Drive when setting up your iOS 8 device until OS X Yosemite is available for download. Files stored in iCloud Drive will only work with iOS 8 devices and OS X Yosemite.

Handoff in iOS 8 allows you to continue working on your choice of device while picking up from where you left off, but this will also require OS X Yosemite.

Third-party apps greatly benefit from this update as Apple has finally allowed developer access to Touch ID, Camera API, PhotoKit, HealthKit,  HomeKit and CloudKit.

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) on Monday announced that iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 plus pre-order figures crossed 4 million devices in the first 24 hours. This is a brand new record for Apple Inc. (AAPL). The company in an official statement said that the initial demand has far exceeded the supply available and many customers who ordered their phone will receive it in the first week of October.

iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 plus according to Apple is the biggest update to the iPhone since the original. Both phones feature larger display with Retina HD technology, new processors, NFC chip, better camera sensors and barometer.

The new phones will go on sale for walk-in customers on September 19 and will be available at Apple retail stores, network partners and authorised resellers.

Apple’s CEO Tim Cook said, “iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are better in every way, and we are thrilled customers love them as much as we do.” He further added, “Pre-orders for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus set a new record for Apple, and we can’t wait to get our best iPhones yet into the hands of customers starting this Friday.”

In addition to the United States, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 plus will also be available in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Puerto Rico, Singapore and the UK this Friday.

To put the pre-order figures of iPhone 6 in perspective, iPhone 5 pre-orders topped two million in first 24 hours in 2012 and the first weekend sales crossed five million devices. Apple did not release pre-order figures for iPhone 5S, however it did reveal that the first weekend sales figures topped 9 million devices and included China too.

This year iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 plus just like iPhone 5 will arrive a bit late in China due to delayed regulatory approvals. So, iPhone 6 pre-orders at 4 million in just 24 hours is certainly a very impressive record for Apple.

With its bigger screen phones, Apple Pay and the upcoming Apple Watch, the company is all set to break previous records and gain a lot of lost ground from Samsung. On September 26 the new phones from Apple will go on sale in 20 additional countries including Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Isle of Man, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Qatar, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Turkey and United Arab Emirates.

Apple started accepting pre-orders for iPhone 6 plus and iPhone 6 earlier today and the shipping date has already slipped to 3-4 weeks for certain models. A quick look at Apple’s online store reveals that iPhone 6 Plus in 128GB and 64GB variations has been extremely popular as the availability has pushed to more than 3 weeks, the 16GB variation shows availability as 7-10 days. While iPhone 6 is still in stock as all variations show delivery date as September 19.

It’s clear that there was pent-up demand for a large screen iPhone. With iPhone 6 plus launch Apple is all set to take the market by storm. iPhone 6 plus features 5.5inch Retina HD display , second generation 64-bit chip, improved camera sensor, NFC chip and more. iPhone 6 features nearly the same features as iPhone 6 plus except the display size which is 4.7 inch and doesn’t feature optical image stabilisation.

The new iPhones will be available in retail stores on September 19. Eager customers began queuing outside the stores much before the phone was announced. Apple may face shortage of stock to meet the release day demand. This has become a trend of sorts with all major product launches from Apple in the recent past.

Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook, didn’t hesitate to comment that iPhone 6 will be mother of all upgrades. Publications that have published early impressions seem to be highly positive about the new phones.

With both new phones featuring larger displays there is something new to experience for everyone. Apple Pay could also play a major factor in bringing in new customers as Apple plans to revolutionise mobile payments. Apple claims that Apple Pay will be easy, fast and secure. The service demo shown during the event involved bringing the phone near the NFC device and simply touching the Touch ID to authenticate payment. The company claims that it will not store any data on its server and will use token system to completely randomise every transaction without storing any sensitive information.

Bigger display, NFC, better camera, faster processor and thinner design that’s exactly what people wanted and Apple has delivered.

One of highlight features in the upcoming iOS 8 software update is extensions, it allows developers to access core functionality of the iOS without sacrificing on intuitiveness or security. With extensions developers can tie into Apple’s sharing sheet, add custom actions, access iCloud drive, notification centre, enable custom keyboards and more.

Apple has introduced a dedicated API for the photos app called “PhotoKit”. Adding filters or editing photos has become increasingly popular practice. iPhone camera is the most popular mobile camera in the world so providing a new API to make editing photos easier is a great benefit for users.

The photography category in the App Store is filled with image editing apps and perhaps most users own more than just one. iOS 8 will allow developers to offer native user interface within the Photos app to embed third-party filters and editing tools.

With a tap of the Action button, you can do things like assign a photo to a contact or print a document. iOS 8 allows developers to extend those capabilities. Slidely is a video postcards app that allows you to select up-to 15 videos and photos, select a theme, music theme and create a video postcard for you. The developers shared a sneak peek of the upcoming update for iOS 8 with us.

The video shows launching the Photos app selecting few photos and videos and then creating a video postcard without ever leaving the app. This makes the entire workflow so easy that we expect people to become more creative with their photos on Instagram, Twitter and Vine.

Prior to iOS 8 if one had to apply any third-party edits, it would require importing photos into the third-party app, applying edits and then exporting it. The best part about extensions is that it does not require you to download any extra app from the App Store. If you download an app from the App Store supports extensions it will be automatically available for you to use.

iOS 8 will be available for download on September 17 just two days before iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 plus go on sale. The update brings many more enhancements that include all new Messages app, iCloud Drive, custom keyboards, Health app, continuity and much more.

During the special iPhone keynote event held on September 9 Apple unveiled two new iPhones. With the introduction of iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 plus Apple has finally entered the big screen smartphone segment which has been dominated by Samsung. When unveiling the new phones, neither Tim Cook nor Phil Schiller spent any time to explain why Apple thought they needed to make larger iPhones. When Apple introduced iPhone 5 with a larger 4 inch screen they ran an advertisement explaining that the thumb fits the size perfectly. However, this time there was no story or idea behind the new size.

If you can recall when Steve Jobs introduced the original iPhone and iPad, he spent considerable time explaining the thought process and idea behind those products. But, this time there was no such thing except getting to the product video and talking about its features.

Apple’s fierce competitor Samsung has left no stone unturned in offering a device in every size category possible while on the other hand Apple has continued to believe in one size for all. For the first time Apple will now be offering the flagship model in two variations. It is possible that the company saw Samsung’s success with the phablet segment and didn’t want to lose out on market share. Customers worldwide have shown a lot of interest in large screen smartphones and this probably played a major role in Apple’s decision.

Of course there are added benefits with a large screen device; you can view more content, fit larger battery and perhaps make more room for new hardware features. Apple could’ve kept the 4 inch iPhone and still offer the plus sized device, but it seems that they felt the need to increase the size for the base flagship model too.

Since, Apple didn’t answer the question “why bigger screen” it may be easy to conclude that market demand could be the only reason. Steve Jobs famously in a interview with Walt Mossberg said that Apple’s focus is to make great products and if the market tells them they’re making the wrong choices they listen to the market. Steve Jobs was not in favour of a smaller version of iPad, however Eddy Cue successfully convinced him about the need for iPad mini. With iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 plus Apple is once again aligning itself to the market needs and this goes onto show that the company is extremely sensitive to its customers voice.

There is no doubt that the new iPhones are gorgeous in design and are the thinnest phones Apple has ever made.  It is noteworthy to mention that the new design is reminiscent of the original iPhone design.

With the reachability feature Apple will make it easier to operate the phone with one hand, but will it work just as Apple advertises? Only time will tell when the phone goes on sale.

Just a few hours ago Apple wrapped up its special media event. As expected the company announced two new iPhones, the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 plus. The new phones will launch in India on September 26 October 17 according to Apple India website.

iPhone 6 features a 4.7 inch retina HD 1334-by-750-pixel resolution at 326 ppi while iPhone 6 plus features 5.5 inch retina HD 1920-by-1080-pixel resolution at 401 ppi. Both phones run on Apple’s second generation 64-bit chip called A8 and include new M8 co-processor for motion tracking. The new A8 and M8 chips are smaller and more power efficient. The new phones will see a performance boost of up-to 50% and up-to 84% faster GPU performance.

Apple has also include a barometer to measure flight based activities like climbing stairs to be included as a physical activity in the health tracking apps.

The camera is still 8 megapixels with 1.5µ pixels, however Apple claims that the new camera sensors and the technology has been enhanced to take much better photos. iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 plus include autofocus with focus pixels, ƒ/2.2 aperture, improved face detection, panorama (up to 43 megapixels) and more. iPhone 6 plus exclusively gains optical image stabilisation technology to avoid the shaky videos and photos with motion blur.

Both phones now also include NFC for Apple Pay service. Unlike other payment services Apple Pay does not store sensitive information rather it allots a unique id and generates dynamic security code while using TouchID authentication for payment transactions.

The new iPhones will be available in 16GB, 64GB and 128GB variations. This year Apple has chosen to discontinue the 32GB variant. The pricing of iPhone 6 in the U.S. is $199, $299, $399 for 16GB, 64GB and 128GB respectively. While iPhone 6 plus is priced priced $100 more for each storage tier.

This will the first time that Apple’s iPhone will be available in India in less than a month since its announcement.

Apple also announced the all-new Apple Watch which is expected to launch in 2015. Apple Watch will be available in three variants. The Apple Watch, Apple Watch Sport, Apple Watch Edition. The pricing will begin at $349 for the low-end model.

Apple has updated its homepage with tweets and photos from the live iPhone 6 keynote event being held at the Flint Center in Cupertino, CA. The homepage shows a countdown to the event which is scheduled to begin at 10 AM PDT and also features a mini live blog of sorts.

Apple CEO Tim Cook’s tweet along-with first photos of the live event are now appearing in chronological order on Apple’s website. The company has truly revamped the way it is handling media and promoting the event this year. In case you missed it, Apple will unveil two new phones at todays event. The iPhone 6 featuring 4.7 inch display and iPhone 6 plus with 5.5 inch display. It is widely believed that in addition to the event focusing on iPhone launch the company will also unveil the smart watch that the company has been working on for the past few years.

iWatch will mark the first new product category Apple is getting into since Steve Jobs. According to a new report Apple’s new iPhone 6 could go on sale on September 19. The company is preparing to release two new iPhones – 4.7 inch and 5.5 inch screen size. Both models are expected to be same in terms of hardware and software features; the only difference being the display and battery size.

The report was published by French website iGen.fr which suggests that both models will be released on the same date. This is contrary to previous reports which suggested that the 5.5 inch model would be made available after the 4.7 inch model release date. However, the report does note that the 5.5 inch model could be available in very limited supply as Apple has been experiencing some production delays related to the bigger form factor of “iPhone 6 plus”. The French publication does have a good record of accurately predicting Apple product launches.

September 19 launch date for both the phones seems plausible and goes well with the release cycle of previous iPhones. Apple typically hosts the unveiling event on Tuesday and the device hits the market the following week on a Friday, giving enough time to tech publications for publishing their in-depth reviews of the new device.

Apple will announce the pricing of the new models during the keynote event today; according to various reports the iPhone 6 plus is expected to be priced $100 more in each storage capacity while iPhone 6 will be priced same as current gen iPhone 5S.

Apple is expected to announce the new iPhone 6 and iWatch in less than four hours from now, however a video posted on YouTube might just be the first iPhone 6 video review before the official announcement. Product leaks ahead of the keynote event have become fairly common, but this is the first time we are witnessing a working version of the new iPhone on video.

The video allegedly shows a large screen iPhone running the upcoming version of iOS. The overall design and construction of the device shown in the video is perfectly in line with the leaked specifications and parts of the iPhone.

The blogosphere seems to be in agreement with all the leaks and rumours that point to iPhone being available in 4.7 inch and 5.5 inch screen sizes. A larger phone from Apple is also expected to feature higher battery capacity. It is unclear if a larger battery will benefit talk time or browsing as the larger battery will now have to run a larger screen. The new iPhone, as the rumours suggest, will feature sapphire crystal that will bring increased durability.

This years iPhone event will be much bigger than the previous years. Apple has opted to host the event at the Flint Center for the Performing Arts which has three times more capacity that Yerba Buena Center of Arts. The company has also invited many notable reporters from the fashion industry indicating that Apple will announce a wearable product.

Apple has been rumoured to be working on an iWatch for many years and today we could finally see what the company has been working on. iWatch is expected to feature biometric sensors. iPhone 5S featured a dedicated M5 coprocessor to collect motion data and now with iWatch Apple could expand its offering in health category.

With less than 5 days left for Apple to announce iPhone 6 at a media event, the excitement to be the first ones to own the device has resulted in campers lining outside Apple’s flagship 5th Avenue store. Since the introduction of the original iPhone, it has become quite customary for customers to line outside Apple’s retail stores. However, this year the “tradition” seems to be reaching new heights as the iPhone 6 is expected to be available on September 19th so the people waiting outside will be there for at-least two weeks.

The campers often have an ‘agenda’ which is either to gain fame, promote their products or earn some money in exchange of the first spot in the line. Apple has been known to be extremely supportive of its customers lining outside the retail stores by offering food and coffee for free. Other companies are also eager to join the bandwagon by sponsoring the campers with their products of course.

Rob Shoesmith camped outside Apple’s retail store for 10 days in anticipation of iPhone 4S which got him a lot of media attention and sponsors. This year Jason and Moon Ray got the first spot after paying $2500 to Brian Ceballo and Joseph Cruz of BuyBackWorld. Jason and Moon Ray are promoting a health app called VideoMedicine which can used to videoconference with doctors.

This year Apple is widely expected to announce 4.7 inch and 5.5 inch screen iPhones. The next iPhone is rumoured to feature sapphire crystal display, improved camera sensor, new biometric sensors, improved battery performance and NFC chip. Analysts report suggest that Apple will finally enter the mobile payment segment with NFC enabled iPhone by partnering with American Express, Visa and MasterCard.

iPhone 6 / iPhone Air is also expected to be available in 128GB capacity in addition to 16GB, 32GB and 64GB models. The pricing of these models is unknown however, it is estimated that 5.5 inch model will cost $100 more that the current price points.

Apart from iPhone announcement the company is also rumoured to enter wearable product category. Apple CEO Tim Cook has commented on wearable technology in the past and has noted that the wrist continues to be an area of interest. Iconic – Guess The Name Quiz From Picture Icons for iPhone is the latest game to join the trivia category in the App Store. If you’ve played Guess The Emoji [FREE] before you’ll feel very comfortable with the gameplay. In Iconic you are presented with hand-crafted icons that are cryptic in nature and the object of the game is to decipher its meaning.

The game presents you with icons and blank spaces to fill out the words. To make your life a bit easier there are jumbled alphabets to choose from to help you guess the meaning of the icons. If you get stuck you can choose to either post the trivia to your Facebook wall and have your friends help you out or use hints available within the game. Each correct answer earns you $1 (virtual game currency) and can be used to purchase hints. If you run out of the in-game currency, but still want to use a hint you can always use in-app purchase to get more $$$.

Visually the game is very minimalistic in its design and goes well with the iOS 7 flat theme. The user interface is intuitive and mostly gesture based.  Flow studio, the developers behind ‘Iconic – Guess The Name Quiz From Picture Icons’ (available for FREE) have included more than 200 hand-drawn icons in the game. The cryptic nature of these icons vary from representing the exact word to giving subtle hints to form the basis of your thinking to solve the puzzle.

The game requires you to have decent knowledge about movies, music, and  famous people. For example, if you haven’t watched the movie Dancing with Wolves or heard about the rock band Alice in Chains, it may take you a while to crack the puzzle. The developers have promised more categories in the future. After solving each puzzle you are presented with a short excerpt from Wikipedia which includes information about the movie, music or person you just guessed.

If you get stuck on a certain puzzle and run out of available hints and don’t want to buy coins, the only option left is to wait for your Facebook friends to help out or try being creative while searching on Google. There is no skip option. This sometimes can have a negative impact on the player. Being able to skip a puzzle and then coming back to it later could encourage the player to continue playing and then come back to the unsolved ones. The current version lacks this feature.

The game comes with a single player mode. There is no timer mode, no multiplayer and no achievements to unlock. It is unclear if the developers are working on these features. Adding different modes and achievements will further enhance the gaming experience and give the game a longer shelf life.

Once you start filling out the blank spaces with the available alphabets there is no way to rearrange them. You have to resort to tapping on the incorrectly placed alphabet and then replacing it. It would’ve been nice if the developers allowed the player to just drag and change the position of the alphabets.

Overall, Iconic for iPhone is a fun and challenging trivia game that successfully manages to ignite that ‘Ah! ha!’ expression.

During the world-wide developers conference Apple introduced iOS 8, the eight major software release for its mobile devices. The upcoming software update will bring many new user facing features that include iCloud Photo Library, new Messages app, keyboard, iCloud Drive, Continuity and much more. iOS 8 will also open more than 4,000 new API’s for developers to use and enhance their apps with added functionality.

Apple added a new feature for developers in iOS 8 called extensions; it works as a plugin giving access to third-party apps to plug into native apps and offer extended functionality. Some of the use cases of this feature could include allowing developers to add custom sharing services, provide photo filters within the Photos app or add a custom action to add things to a list.

iOS 8 is the biggest release for developers since the introduction of the App Store. It opens up new areas of iOS, allowing developers to extend the reach of their app content and functionality.Apple

Things for iPhone $9.99 and iPad $19.99 is a hugely popular task manager application. The developers recently published a video showcasing iOS 8 extension capability. The video shows an iPhone with a website open in Safari. After copying some text and then tapping the share action button reveals Things custom action button called “Add to Things” to create a new task.

Things 2.5 update will bring this new feature to the app. The current version of the app hasn’t been updated to match the iOS 7 flat look and feel however, the developers are working on Things 3.0 which bring all new features and new user interface.

With more than 4,000 new API’s developers will be able to take advantage of new custom keyboard, Touch ID authentication, notification centre on the lock screen and much more.

Apple product launches are rarely a surprise these days with most details being revealed much before the release date. The keynote events have become increasingly predictive since the iPhone 4 debacle. iPhone 6 / iPhone Air is expected to be announced at a special keynote event on September 9th. From the design to tech specs the rumour mill seems to have access to all the details with quite convincing proofs to prove their credibility.

If the recent part leaks of the upcoming iPhone 6 weren’t enough a new HD video published by Russia-based YouTuber Rozetked, shows the parts of alleged new iPhone completely assembled. The assembled parts are claimed to be of iPhone Air / iPhone 6 which is rumoured to be 4.7 inch in size. This year Apple is expected to release two new iPhones with 4.7 inch and 5.5 inch screens sizes.

According to the reports published by various news outlets, iPhone 6 will feature sapphire crystal display, NFC chip, improved camera sensors, longer battery life and new sensors. There has been a lot of debate concerning the cost of the new iPhones as the sapphire crystal displays are costly and very hard to produce. It is possible that 4.7 inch screen size may be available at existing price points however a 5.5 inch screen iPhone could be priced $100 more.

Apple will be holding the iPhone event at  Flint Center for the Performing Arts which is much bigger than the venues Apple typically selects for new product announcements. It is interesting to note that the company is also building a three-storey structure at the event venue. There have been a few reports about Apple introducing a new wearable product during the event, it is unclear if the new structure is being built to showcase some specific functionality of the wearable product. If rumours are to be believed then the new iWatch(?) will only be demoed at the event, its availability is scheduled for early next year. Steve Jobs introduced the original Macintosh at the same venue almost 30 years ago.

Earlier today Apple sent out media invites for a special event scheduled for September 9th. The invite has Apple logo with the date 9.9.2014 and text that reads “Wish we could say more”. The event is most likely to announce the new iPhone 6.

Various news outlets had published the news about the rumoured event date and today Apple has finally confirmed the date. Unlike previous years this time Apple is hosting the event at Flint Center for the Performing Arts in Cupertino. Previously the company has hosted the September event at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco or Apple’s Cupertino campus. It’s easy to speculate that this year Apple maybe looking at seating more people for the event as it prepares to announce new hardware models and new product categories.

According to the rumours and reports published by various sources Apple is widely expected to announce two new iPhones. The new iPhone will feature bigger screen size and have two variants. iPhone 6 could be available in 4.7 inch and 5.5 inch screen size. If this turns out to be true then this would be the first time that the company introduces two new iPhones with different screen size.

iPhone 6 is also rumoured to feature new sensors, improved camera system and possibly also feature NFC.

Apple could also announce new product category by entering the wearables industry with an ‘iWatch’. Recent reports suggest that Apple could finally introduce a smart watch which will connect with the iPhone 6 and provide new ways to interact with our devices. The new wearable product could feature biometric sensors to monitor the user’s body and save vital stats on the iPhone.

Since, iPhone 6 and iWatch are expected to work together harmoniously it does make sense to introduce the new product category along with the smartphone.

With just 13 days left until the iPhone 6 keynote event kicks off, we can expect some new details emerge in the coming days. Apple will put all rumours at rest by unveiling new products on September 9th.

Apple recently refreshed the Retina MacBook Pro lineup with modest enhancements. The latest high-resolution MacBook Pro’s include Intel’s latest processors, boosting the CPU speed by a mere 0.2 GHz and 15 inch model with 256GB SSD now comes with standard 16GB RAM.

I bought the 15-inch Retina MacBook Pro with 512GB SSD, 2.5GHz i7 quad-core processor and 16GB RAM on August 15th, the day it was launched in India. This is my second Mac the first was a 27-inch mid 2010 iMac. I recently published the story behind me switching from an iMac to MacBook Pro, if you’re interested you can find it here.

It’s been almost 10 days since I’ve been using the new Retina MacBook Pro and this review will be focusing on real-world use, general observations and experiences. Over the last 10 days my workflow has drastically changed. I was using a windows laptop before I purchased the iMac, and over the last 4 years working on a large 27-inch screen made me feel that going back to a laptop would be a challenge. However, I was prepared for the tradeoff between modern computing speed and screen space.

As I started working on the new Retina MacBook Pro I was pleasantly surprised with the fact that I was being more efficient in my workflow and obviously could get the work done much faster than ever before. Before I get into the details about how the MacBook Pro changed my workflow I should talk about how I work.

A typical day would see me browsing through hundreds of webpages, lots of email, working on Pages, creating presentations on Keynote,  producing wireframes for apps, web design etc. With the luxury of 27 inch screen I mostly had everything open on a single desktop area. This allowed me to always have a bird’s eye view of everything that was open and gave me a feeling of being in control over everything. I rarely ever used ‘Spaces’ (creating multiple desktop spaces in OS X) as I just liked everything at one space. Even though this allowed me to view more at once, it could easily be too distracting at times.

With the MacBook Pro going from 27-inch to 15.4 inch screen required me to adjust the way I worked. From having lots of windows open at once I instantly switched to a more organised workflow by creating multiple spaces. Also, using full screen apps now made more sense, having mail open full screen on a 27 inch screen is not the same as it being open full screen on 15.4 inch screen. Full screen apps such as Mail, Pages or Safari make more sense on laptop when compared to a desktop. So, even though now I would see less at once but this increased my focus on the task at hand. Over the last 10 days I’ve noticed that having less to view at once actually made more sense and one could be more productive this way. It’s worth mentioning that I do miss the large screen space when it comes to wire framing apps, websites or editing a movie, but retina display surely makes up for that.

The first thing I ever noticed about the new MacBook Pro was its flawless high-resolution screen. The text is crisp, photos look stunning and it’s a complete visual treat. It suddenly makes you wonder why on Earth would you ever work on anything that does not have a retina screen. So, it was love at first sight with the new screen.

Once you come to terms with how excellent the screen is you start noticing that everything is just swift. Thanks to the SSD launching applications, booting-up, waking from sleep, reading & writing data is very fast. I can’t stress enough on how ‘fast’ especially if you’re moving from HDD to SSD for the first time on a computing machine. I would never turn off the iMac as it would take about 3-4 minutes to boot-up and that often felt like a lot. Apple’s iOS devices ‘always on’ usage behaviour has certainly changed the way we expect the way modern computers should work. MacBook Pro takes only a few seconds (less than 15) to boot-up so turning it off when not using it can help you save some energy. Although, there are no major benefits of turning off your computer when not using it, however occasionally it will make it more responsive as it will clear the RAM being hogged by kernel tasks.

The next aspect about the Retina MacBook Pro that I want to highlight is 16GB RAM. For the last four years I had been working with 4GB RAM on my iMac. For the modern-day browsing and general computing activities 4GB just isn’t enough although it does depend on how you use your computer. Since, I love having 15-25 tabs open in Safari when I’m researching on some topic having access to lots of RAM is a huge advantage.

I’ve put the new MacBook Pro under extreme work load by having lots of safari tabs open, playing SimCity, working on a Pages document, importing photos to iPhoto and even working on Final Cut Pro and Aperture, but the MacBook Pro just keeps taking it all and doesn’t lag one bit. I would refer to myself as a “power” user, so working on a portable machine that can take all that load is extremely satisfying.

I was a bit concerned about the battery life of my new Retina MacBook Pro. I had considered holding off my purchase for another year in anticipation of Intel’s Broadwell chips that are expected to be much more power efficient. However, so far the battery life on the MacBook Pro has been very reasonable. Keeping the screen brightness low and keyboard backlight off while not activating the dedicated graphics chip the MacBook Pro has exceeded Apple’s battery guidelines. Switching from iMac to a MacBook Pro also gave me the freedom from being tied to my desk. This freedom to work from anywhere without sacrificing on power or battery is a huge benefit.

The last aspect I want to cover is the overall build quality. Apple’s Retina MacBook Pro is undoubtedly the best looking machine you can buy in the market. The unibody construction feels extremely solid and it doesn’t feel that heavy when compared with the older generation models.

When working for long durations the system does heat up and sometimes it can get a bit uncomfortable. The fans have rarely kicked in at full speed during normal use. In my daily use the fans kicked in at full speed only while playing SimCity as the game requires the use of dedicated graphics card.

The Retina MacBook Pro might be costly but it scores highly in all aspects you can think of. However, it may still not meet everyone’s requirement. If you’re into high-end gaming and love running games at highest graphics settings then this may not be for you. If you prefer having more than 1TB storage then you’d have to look elsewhere. Upgrading the machine after purchasing is not possible; 16GB RAM will always remain 16GB. The device has been rated low in repairability. If you want to play DVD’s you would need to buy a SuperDrive.

Other benefits of a MacBook Pro include iCloud, access to some of the best softwares from the Mac App Store, less susceptible to malware, extremely responsive multi-touch trackpad and the best customer support service.

Apple’s Retina MacBook Pro is the gold standard in laptops and OS X Yosemite will only put it further in the lead. If you’ve waited all this while to switch to the MacBook Pro lineup there was never a better time than today.
