Apple’s Interest in Acquiring Chip Design Firms
According to The Information, Apple is looking into acquiring companies that specialize in chip design. Despite leading in the consumer market with its Apple Silicon chips, the company reportedly feels that progress on developing AI-specific chips for its data centers is not up to par. This initiative, known internally as ACDC (Apple Chips in Data Center), has encountered some setbacks. The first chip, codenamed Baltra, was initially scheduled for release in 2026 but is now facing delays.
Impact of Delays in Chip Development
These delays have led Apple to rely on Google Cloud and Nvidia’s technologies for powering the most advanced models of the new Apple Intelligence generation. Originally, Apple had planned to utilize its own chips for this purpose. While current Apple Silicon servers are based on the M2 Ultra chip, this chip wasn’t specifically designed for such applications. Future models, such as the M5 Ultra, are anticipated, but it is the development of a chip dedicated to AI that would enable Apple to move away from Google Cloud and Nvidia, fully embracing its proprietary architecture.
Apple’s Strategic Moves Indicate Possible Acquisitions
Apple has reportedly been reaching out to several industry players as well as bankers, suggesting that the company is open to making a significant acquisition. Last quarter, Apple’s CFO, Kevan Parekh, announced a shift in Apple’s cash management policy that would allow the company’s cash reserves to grow. This was a move away from the usual dividends and share buyback programs, potentially setting the stage for a larger-than-usual acquisition. To date, Apple’s largest acquisitions include the purchase of Beats for three billion dollars in 2014, and Q.ai for two billion dollars in 2026.
