Apple Faces Growing Competition for Its Design Talent

Apple is reportedly concerned about the increasing number of competitors aiming to poach its designers, particularly those involved with the iPhone. OpenAI, which has hired Apple’s former design director Jony Ive, is now seen as a significant threat. Moreover, OpenAI’s hardware division is partially led by Tang Tan, who previously served as Apple’s vice president of product design. According to Bloomberg, Apple has implemented a system of exceptional bonuses in the form of stock options that vest over four years. This strategy is designed to encourage employees to stay at the Cupertino-based company in order to receive the full bonus, which could be worth between $200,000 and $400,000.

Apple’s Response to Recruitment Challenges

Although this bonus mechanism is not new, the scale of the bonuses is reportedly extraordinary and a direct response to a recent spike in recruitment efforts from startups. Mark Gurman states that Apple is making an effort to retain its staff but is not willing to engage in a bidding war: “These bonuses are still much lower than those offered by OpenAI and other companies. In some cases, these companies are offering Apple engineers about a million dollars per year in stock options to persuade them to leave the company.”
