US-China Tariff Truce Reached in Busan Meeting
Following a pivotal meeting held today in Busan, South Korea, US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping have successfully agreed on a one-year suspension of import tariffs between their two nations, as reported by the New York Times. The tariff war had escalated quickly after the US announced new tariffs in April, leading to a retaliatory move by China and a spike in import duties between the two countries to 125%. Both nations had previously declared a 90-day halt in May, which was extended for another 90 days in August. With just days left before the deadline for a new agreement, the leaders have now reached a resolution. This agreement notably includes the removal of restrictions on the export of Chinese rare earth elements, a significant development for the high-tech industry.
Apple’s Strategic Moves Amidst Trade Tensions
Apple, which relies on subcontractors in China for the assembly of many of its products, had urgently received a waiver from the tariffs for its electronic devices. Despite this, Apple’s logistics team in Cupertino has been actively working to relocate a portion of their production capacity to other Asian countries, including India. This shift has not been well-received by Donald Trump, who has expressed his desire for iPhones to be manufactured in the United States. He even threatened Apple with a specific tax targeted at them, but the company responded by stating that the required level of automation to assemble iPhones in the US would make the costs prohibitive.
Apple has since been demonstrating its commitment to supporting various sectors of the American industry, as well as engaging in less substantial ways, like contributing to projects favored by the President. Notably, Apple is listed among the donors for the White House ballroom.
